Montero 2.4L swap (The bolt on 2.6 replacement thread)
      #1227703 - 11/11/10 12:45 PM

Well i've been running this setup for a few months now and this thing is GREAT! It's got plenty of power and it just feels like it belongs in the Montero. Would definitely be the best swap for trucks plagued with a 2.6L, with a little planning and a donor mighty max the swap could be done over a weekend. Makes me want another Gen 1.

do you have a build thread for this? I did a search, but didn't see much on the overall process. My daughter(14) wants to start building her first rig. She really likes mine, but maybe getting another and doing this swap would be the way to go since I can't find a v6 gen1 swb around here.

I need to update my thread and add the pictures, My swap was a little different since mine was originally a Gen2 V6, my 2.4 was missing parts, my engine was a junkyard engine and had sat for a good 5+ years . In a gen 1 4 cylinder it would be a bolt in swap assuming you found a wide block 6 bolt 2.4, if you find a newer 2.4 it will be a 7 bolt crank in which case you would need to buy the Pajero flex plate and adapter. These parts belong to the Pajero's that came with the 2.4L from the factory i think it cost me something like 260 for everything i needed flexplate, spacer, adapter and bolts from mitsubishiparts.net.

Doing the 2.4 swap is probably the easiest swap for the gen , the wire harness is small and since the 2.6 doesn't have much of a harness and all it's parts can be removed it will make a perfect place for the new 2.4 stuff to go.
I should make a list of all the things that are needed to do the swap and a list of the different 2.4's horsepower and torque gains throughout the years.

whats the gas mileage like on it? The 4g64 gets pretty thirsty behind an auto. I've been tempted to toss on a 4g63 dohc head to my van 64 and see how it goes. You bump it up to 11:1 or so compression and it would need premium, but should put over 160hp out. Considering the 4g64 dohc out of a 95 galant put out that with less compression. same head. diferent cams n cam gears though.

I haven't figured out my milage yet but it's really good even with 35's but you have to remember my truck is a flat bed and lost a lot of weight during the operation. I think the 8V 2.4 will get 17-20 in a SWB for sure, the 2.4 that comes from a montero sport is more powerfull and i think it's a 16V should get better milage. I'm pretty sure the sport 2.4 has close to the same amount of power as the 12V 3.0. I passed emissions at less than half of the standard for the 3.0, I felt like i was cheating but this kind of swap is what they like to see.

There is extensive data on putting 4g63 heads, and that gets you to doing a 2.4T with dsm parts, and you are looking at 200+hp and 300ftlbs of torque, and whatever it's in becomes an entirely different beast. For example, a 180hp 2.6T in a 2dr raider can hop a front wheel up onto a 12" obstacle with an a/t in 4lo. and whip 5.0 mustangs light to light...

I found this on project zero G, It lists most of the engines. The ones that bolt up to monteros are the wide blocks and the 6 bolts can use the 2.6 flexplates and flywheels otherwise the more common 7 bolt engines can be used with the below flexplate and spacers. The 6 bolt narrow block engines will bolt up to 87 and older monteros with the 3 speed torqueflite auto.

Part numbers
MB936679 (7 bolt) flex plate bolts $1.92 each
MB936623 (Spacer) PLATE $6.04
MB936624 A/T DRIVE P $57.55
MB936621 ADAPTER $176.84

In case the donor engine doesn't have power steering

MD074533 PULLEY (water pump) $16.81
MD041057 PULLEY (crank) $29.14
MB553718 BRACKET (pump) $38.05

My power steering bracket hasn't come in the mail yet so i don't know if it will need to be modified to take the montero pump or not. Oh i also looked up the montero sport 2.4 is a 16V and produces 132hp 148ftlbs of torque.

so for the last 6bolt highlighted, you get fuel injection with the swap? what about the 7bolt wideblock? are you also saying a '97+ MS 2.4 would bolt in for a gen1 2.6L? Cant wait to see pics.

the dohc head wont clear the floor in your van and the intake is also pointed the wrong way for a van
