4.90 or 4.88 gear question
      #1220497 - 08/17/10 04:46 PM

I have the rear axle from a 1997 montero sport with disk brakes and 4.63 gears. i want either 4.88 or 4.90, but they did not come in the sports so i cannot do a part look up in ASA. so, my question is, can anyone say for sure if a 4.88 or 4.90 3rd member from a regular Montero is a direct bolt in? or if I can take the R&P from one of these and put it into my 3rd? If anyone can give me a part number or year of what I should get, that would be a great help. Thanks.

yup
4.90s are very common in sports, AFAIK they are the only montero with 4.90s...

I have no idea how I missed that, but the 4.63 r&p are the same part number for all years. That said, the 4.9 r&p are all the same for all years. So, even though it was not an option for the 97 MS, the 4.9 should still be a bolt on upgrade and I can get them from any year. the 4.9 part number is MR296348. Is my logic flawed?

No, in Oz anyway the 4.90 is a direct swap in for the 4.636.

The 4.90 rear R&P OE P/N is MR124858. From what I understand, for the front you'll want 4.88's from a GenI or the whole non-CAD diff unit from an AWD Sport. Both of which are becoming pink-with-purple-polka-dot unicorns to find...
