Latest Mods on the SR lots of pics
      #1214765 - 06/22/10 12:57 AM

Wow, its been so long since I have posted on here, but I am still around and still modding the Montero. I have done so many mods during this time, I might be leaving out some details, but will do the best I can to capture everything.

First off, I got some air pumping to my front locker! My brother had some custom brackets fabricated to mount my compressor and air tank. As you can see, there is a large grade power connector mounted just in case I need to remove the air compressor, I won't have to cut cables.

Now, the secret compartment............what is in it you might ask? Lets find out.

The factory 10 disc changer of course, but also a 1200 watt power inverter

complete with an indicator display that shows you how much of the 1200 watts you are consuming

You will see where the power goes later on.

Here is a shot of behind the inverter; the cables go along the wheel well to the front of the drawer..........more on that later.

plenty of cold beer on any trip.........freezer and fridge, so we can even take frozen steaks or ice pops to moab, yes it gets that cold inside :)

slides out for eazy access in the rear.............don't let your mind go in the gutter.

25 gallon freshwater tank........yes I live in a desert and just might need it for cleaning, showering, etc. might not have a stream nearby every night on the trail.

Here is a big hole......this is the entry point for the airline, water line and power lines for the inverter and air compressor. I used that spray foam stuff to seal it up.

Here is the top of the water tank, one way breather to let air in as water is consumed, the big cap is for filling.......I can fill thru sliding window either with the on board pump using hose or using a jerry can.

here is another shot of the compressor, air goes from compressor thru one way check valve and then to tank. Tank is then connected to a 7 port manifold that you see mounted on side of bracket.

here is a better shot of the manifold, from left to right, we have air input from tank, 150 psi blow off valve in case of switch failure, 105 psi switch, empty port, two white tubing outputs (one goes to air gauge you will see later on the dash and the other goes to front locker solenoid), lastly the big black hose on the end is the output for airing up tires with my roger brown 4 air tire system and using air tools or blow gun if I want. Also, there is another white tube you can see that comes off the bottom of the tank. this particular tube goes to the exhaust manifold, it is on the bottom so as to let moisture buildup exit the tank when the system exhausts..........more on the operational design on a later picture.

Here you can see 70 amp relay responsible for controlling and supplying power to the compressor.

remember all the cables coming off the back of inverter? well here you can see them wrap around and go in front of the drawer there they go back to that huge hole I drilled through the bottom of the body. some of the cables and tubing go forward to the locations within the cab of the truck, some go under the rear seat to the solenoid valves.

fuse for freezer fridge is easy to get to, just in case.

Here are the two solenoid valves. one is for the front locker. what I did was tapped into the power wire for the rear locker air pump and triggered a relay with a 500mA fuse. This relay supplies power to the front locker valve so that the front locker only actuates after rear locker is turned on. this prevents accidentally turning on front locker in 2wd, not good for gen II monteros. The other valve is hooked up in reverse configuration, meaning I plugged up port 1 and I have it energized when compressor is turned on so that when compressor is on, exhaust line is closed, when compressor is turned off, exhaust line is opened up thus draining the tank and allow not only pressure to exit, but any moisture as well. Both exhausts are through the floor, you will see the diffusers on the other side later on.

remember those two power lines coming off the inverter? here is the output of 1 of them.

when all else fails, grab the flashlight

pajero fender turn signals, yeah I know, when I was deployed, I saw them everywhere and wanted them so badly, I even drilled my own holes and used expansion nuts to mount them.

i went pajero style up front too, these combination lights have turn signal, parking light, as well as a 'ditch light' that gets bright when that particular turn signal is turned on. at least that is what they were intended for. the montero turn signal flasher unit does not allow you to wire it to function like that, so I wired the bright ditch light to my fog lights instead to illuminate sides of road in fog.

Here is the water intake (from streams or RV hook ups) as well as hot water output. the 3rd connection is 105 psi compressed air for filling tires with roger brown 4 air tire system, it works well and fills fast.

Here is the air gauge as well as oil and volts. but why put oil and volts when monteros already have oil and volt gauges? in short, b/c I ripped those factory gauges out for some more fun gauges that are unique.

the volt meter has a switch, why? to select which battery voltage you want to check: main battery or aux battery, yes it has two batteries.

this was me being crazy, yes a 500 japanese 'JAOS' remote search light that I can mount on my roof rack for when I want to hunt kangaroos

complete with warning label in Japanese.

little red switch, big function. so my dual battery system has this feature to shut off accessories when voltage drops to a certain threshold, but with a deep cycle battery, I wanted to be able to go past this threshold if I needed to. this switch is an override switch so I can continue to use my accessories even after it goes below 40% threshold of remaining battery life.

coolant is green, water is blue. hot water system can produce nearly boiling water if I want, but at idle, the montero water pump is too slow to keep up with heat demand in freezing temps, so I added an electric coolant pump in line with the heat exchanger, this green switch rapidly circulates the coolant thru the engine block and heat exchanger. the blue switch turns on my water pump to push freshwater thru exchanger and out the output of the front bumper.

air compressor and front locker switches....air compressor can be used anytime, for filling tires if needed. front locker only turns on when rear locker is turned on.

red switch turns on aux fans, orange switch turns on rock lights, more on that later. toggle switch is for winch.

CB Radio

dual battery system monitor, when engine is off, I can use any accessory and essentially kill my aux battery dead and still start the truck with my main battery. once started, it charges them up while driving on the trail. when winching, it isolates aux battery from alternator so my alternator doesn't feel the effects of the voltage spikes and current draws while using winch.

switch panel for lights, we have side lights left, driving lights, reverse lights, and side lights right.

My fun gauges...........this is why i ripped out my oil and volt meters........inclinometer and altimeter, what other cars have those except the 94 SRs.

Aux fuel tank gauge and transfer pump switch

this is to turn on and off my inverter from up front, so we can use AC outlet while driving to charge stuff or whatever.

I hope I never have to use this

the other side lights

outdoor power, waterproof outlet, this is where the other power cable went to.

thermostatic mixing valve allows me to adjust hot water temp output to desired temps. also prevents the scalding burst of water when you first turn on pump from water sitting in the hot exchanger. the little black handle on the left side is a selector valve that determines the source of water to use (either external thru bumper from a stream or pond or the on board tank if no water source is nearby)

relays to control stuff

here is that little coolant pump, cute little thing isn't it?

hot water heat exchanger, hard to see without taking stuff apart.

neatly crammed engine bay

aux fan, comes on with switch inside manually, the switch also turns on AC fan along with this one.

two gas tanks, two holes, aux tank to the left, main tank to right

plumbing behind it all

neatly clamped so as to prevent rubbing

filler pipe

lots of water lines, power lines, air lines, etc routed on frame rail

filler neck

body spacers to accommodate for body lift. very tight quarters in there, notice how close filler neck is to adjustable shock absorber actuator.........had to get position just right

water pump with filter.

rock lights, there are 4 of them

another shot of water pump

factory fuel filter had to be relocated, here is where it used to be

after careful bending of fuel lines, here is where it is located now.

aux fuel tank does not affect ground clearance

snug against drive shaft, but yet no rubbing

they didn't take into account the little bracket for the rear locker airline, nothing a little grinding and cutting wouldn't take care of.

remember the exhaust from the front locker and the air tank solenoids? here they are with diffusers to let air out slowly and controlled.

grounding block so high amp accessories don't have to rely on factory wiring or body panels to find a route back to aux battery (winch, inverter, air compressor, etc.)

400 amp fuse block for winch, also, there is a 250 amp block for the inverter and a 60 amp fuse for compressor, but didn't take pics of those. there are also 12 standard fuse slots for all other accessories, I posted these a long time ago and didn't include in this post.

fuel, water, and propane,

goes here:

aux fuel tank transfer pump, how it works is, once the main tank gets low, I can transfer fuel from aux tank into main tank. with both tanks, I can carry 40 gallons.

different things for water usage

i also have a long water hose for each side (intake as well as output) this is a strainer for a stream bed or pond/lake.

drawer with lots of recovery gear

rock lights in action

side lights right

reverse lights

side lights left; what is nice about these lights is that they are positioned under my pull out awning, so I can pull it out if raining, pull down mosquito net and have light under my make shift tent.

gauges at night

parking lights standard

parking lights with fog lights on, turns on ditch lights throwing lots of light on sides of road, probably not legal, but what is legal about this vehicle?

lots of 4way flashers now, ARB bumper flashers, fender flashers, plus the standard front turn signals.

well, that is it for now, i have been writing for over an hour or so, got to get going to bed.

mods still yet to come:
snorkle
some good skid plates
brand new radiator just b/c I want a new one and its hot in moab :)
new ball joints, new tie rods, new CV Boots, new front brake pads.

yes, it would suck to wreck it, I take my time when I wheel it. surprisingly, it handles the rough terrain quite well despite the heavy weight of it.

I can fit a total of 5 people including driver with safety belts. if I bring my two 100 lbs labs, its just me and another person up front as they take up the whole back seat.

I haven't taken it out a whole lot lately. been doing a lot of work on it and then test runs to get the bugs out. I sometimes take it in the huachuca mountains b/c they are my back yard.

my brother and I were planning to go to moab this summer, but he ended up getting deployed. he gets back in Nov and we plan to go next spring.

If I ever get time off, I want to drive this thing all over exploring, that was my intent. right now I am an aide de camp to a two star general, so my life is a bit consumed with that job, not like it was before. I used to have weekends off, now not so much

Bloody hell!

That is all

Seriously, awesome work Scottie. Although this is high end stuff, best part is that you figured it all out, fitted it yourself and made it all work. That's the most impressive part for me
