Carlos had a Cherokee bumper that I was going to buy from him, but I flaked because I knew I wouldn't be able to get around to modifying it for quite some time. Sorry, Carlos...

After messing up that deal, I found out that FJ60 ARB winch bumpers are hard to come by in the U.S. right now. In fact, the distributor for the West Coast was out with no foreseeable restock date. So, when I found one on sale, and in stock, at Iron Pig Offroad, I jumped on it.

Friday, I spent 6 hours cutting and grinding to get the 2" receiver tube that the PO welded TO the front bumper and frame off of the rig. On Saturday morning, I got the bull bar put on. I also received my new solenoid pack for my old school 8274 from Warn. Now, I just need to test the motor, get the winch cleaned and mounted, and I'll be ready to go. I'm going to run synthetic winch line, so I'll need to make sure the winch drum is nice and smooth.

The 33" X-Terrains should be mounted and balanced on Monday or Tuesday.

Here are some pics of the weekend's progress.

Too bad you're so far away; if she hasn't sold it already, I know someone who has the Yakima roof rack off her '85.

Bumper looks good on there.

Thanks, Margie. I have 2 sets of yakima gutter feet and crossbars on the shelf in the garage. The reason they're not on the truck is because I have the roof rack that came on the rig. So, this weekend, I focused on getting the rack back on top, getting the kayak cradles mounted and test fitted, and getting the FTM-350 mounted up. I don't have any pics of the radio since I didn't get to work on my face plate mount, but below are a few pics of the exterior improvements.

I got the 33" X-Terrains mounted and installed a larger mirror on the driver's side. Once TLC gets another, I'll put one on the passenger's side, as well. The visibility improvement is amazing over the old one.

My helper...glad to finally see his kayak back on the rack. He's been dying to get back out on the water.

Labor Day finally brings an opportunity for camping, so I've been working over time on the rig. Unfortunately, there won't be any wheeling involved, but it will be sleeping outside, just the same. We'll be loading up the kayaks and heading down to Arroyo Seco or Big Sur for a couple of days with good company.

I went ahead and mounted some anti-tailgater/campsite lights on the rear of the roof rack. I should get them wired up tomorrow.

The V8 has been feeling a little sluggish under load, so I've been doing a lot of reading. During my digging, I found that GM put out a TSB on the fuel injectors on this engine. A quick call to my favorite parts guy revealed that he had everything I needed to do the update in stock, so I tackled that last night and today.

Old vs. new. The new setup is pretty cool. It didn't really help with the sluggishness, but it is good insurance and definitely worth the coin in cost to get the parts. Reliability is the word for me these days...

Inside the upper intake cover after I did some scraping and cleaning. The GM tech I was chatting with mentioned large amounts of carbon buildup in there when the engine hasn't been maintained religiously. Well, the front half of this thing had carbon caked in there. Scraping with a shop vac providing continuous suction took care of most of it. I will say that this engine is a dream to work on compared to the last two I've done work to. We'll see how things shape up after I put a few miles on it...

I got my comms gear mounted up today. Details can be seen here: http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=1216731&an=0&page=0#Post1216731

Tomorrow, I'll install 4* shims to get my caster straightened out. Steering has been a little touchy since installing the OME lift. I also will finish installing my S/S brake lines from TLC 4x4 and the Russell speed bleeders that Margie and Brian recommended. Finally, I hope to get some wiring done on my various lights and interior stuff. I have an ARB fridge to figure out mounting for and need to get packed for next weekend. My stuff has cobwebs and dirt (not dust) on it from sitting in the garage...

Thanks for the comments.

Greg, you're right, it was nasty. I'm gradually working my way through it and am longing for the day I can get the dag-burned thing running right.

Reuben, thanks for dropping in. I'll try to get some footage up once It's good to go. Although, I don't think the ceramic mic in the video camera will do it justice.

Today, while in Menlo Park for the boy's soccer game, I got the call to drive up to San Leandro and pick up some sliding windows for it. I had contacted the fella to buy them from him, but since he couldn't make it down to meet me, he said I could have them if I'd drive the whole way up to get them. Well, I couldn't refuse and drove the extra 20 minutes North to nab them. With the way things have been going with the engine, I needed something positive, and this was it!

This weekend, I flogged on this dolphin quite a bit but didn't quite get the thing straightened out. I'm trying to get a new MAF for it tomorrow. The saga continues...

I finally got the rig running right. I know the importance of having a few basic ignition and pressure testing tools that I will ensure I pick up for the tool box. An in-line spark tester and an O2 sensor adaptor for a pressure gauge are a must! This thing runs like a champ! Hopefully, after a couple of tanks of gas for the computer to learn my driving style, I'll be able to realize the fabled MPG improvement that this engine is supposed to get over the 2F. Well, if I can keep my right foot from smothering the gas pedal, that is...

This week I had no classes to attend, so I spent some time getting outstanding things wrapped up.

I got the interior power buss and grounding point installed and connected

And the HAM radio connected

I got the dual batteries installed and wired

I had the folks at Kar Tunes build some door mounted boxes for my components. They are a little bulky but necessary what with the limited mounting depth that the door glass presents. These speakers are by far the best I've ever had in one of my vehicles. I bought them for less than half price at a store closing sale in San Diego before I went overseas and have been saving them. Wow, am I glad that I did! They are powered by an Alpine CDA-117 via an Alpine PDX 4.150 (150 Watts RMS per channel). I'm installing a set of Alpine coaxials in the rear doors tomorrow.

Finally, I've been on the waiting list at Lavender Bros Automotive (XXX Traction) to get some rocker protection fab work done. These sliders are one off and BEEF. Toby designed them to sandwich the crease between two tubes. We discussed notching the seam to allow them to tuck up close to the body and decrease ground clearance reduction. I brought them home to clean and paint them today, and Toby will install them on Monday.

Sliders

Notches

One more for scale

It's almost ready to wheel. I'm looking forward to getting out on the trail!

Hey Russ,

I've been going easy on the speakers as I break them in, but I'm pretty sure they'll make my ears bleed if I crank them up to their potential with this amp. Even at a volume level of 12, they are LOUD. I had no idea what they were when I bought them. I only knew they were 40% off.
