Mitsubishi V6 Lifter Tick Fix
      #1198178 - 02/09/10 03:26 AM

This is an extraction from the Mitsubishi workshop manual

I have also found that there are 2 different lifters.

1 Has a small hole with about a 1mm hole diameter whereas the revised version has a bigger hole of about 3mm diameter. These bigger hole lifters paired with Caltex delo 400 oil makes them virtually 100% silent

Really? Maybe I misunderstand what "stickied" means... I thought if it was stickied it would get a little "stick pin" icon and stay at the top of the first page... kind of like the "tech reference" thread. I don't see that with this one

if you stickied everything, you would have to go to page 3 to find the first thread...When I joined, there were only 3 threads on the first page that weren't stickies

Talking to the guy who rebuilt my heads for my 3.slow, I found out that is not the only reason they tick. He said he rebuilt a ton of the 3.0 heads back in the 90s. He said the rocker arm actually gets worn down where the lifter goes into it.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

That's what the techs told me, too.

The 3.0L in the '97 Sport had the small hole. Prone to clogging. In '98 they switched to the larger hole lifter to get away from that problem. Least-wise that's what I was told.

I have successfull bled the lifters on the truck. I pull the valve covers, ground the coil wire, and crank the truck until the gauge shows pressure. Then, using a fine probe (I use a blunted sewing needle or straight pin) go thru the tiny hole in the lifter end of the rocker and depress the check ball, and while pressing, push down on the lifter to force out the air (if the rocker is under valve spring pressure, you dont have to push the rocker). Repeat the cranking as necessary to keep oil to the lifter oil gallery.

This has cured a cronic lifter tick that the rev/coast/rev cycle would not clear up.

I'll have to try this one, good idea.

BTW My 2001 Sport had the small hole version(I think). I had to use welding wire to bench bleed them, none of my picks would fit through the hole.

When I redid the heads on mine, I had lifters fall apart when I pulled them out of rockers.
