headers - how do i find a good pair for a Buick 225 oddfire v6?

I'm building a 225 'dauntless' v6, and I could really use a set of block-hugger style headers - narrow, not fender exit. i have a set of hooker headers, for comparison, and my jeep just can't fit anything wide

So? who makes (or does anybody have..?) a set for my engine?

If that old 225 still has it's manifolds I think I'd use them instead of headers that wouldn't do one damn thing for helping it.. That engine isn't gonna win any races no matter what you bolt on it.

Well, ifn I don't find anything, all I'm left with is the stock manifolds. So I would most likely do that.
But seeing as how the engine already has a 4bbl, offenhauser parts, etc, i figured the ideal thing to do would be hunt for headers, to complete the package

A 4-barrell on a 225? I sure hope the back barrels have a real tight spring on them.

You're insinuating that's too much for a 225.
Its a small 4bbl, I promise. And I've seen 225s with 4bbl setups before

Yep! I've seen em too.. But most of them actually slowed down the engine they were installed on.
Carbs work of off the velocity of the air entering them. When a too large carb is installed the vacuum in the engine drops which retards the timing.. While the vac is down the carb isn't doing it's job either. A "too small" carb is ALWAYS better.
It is a rare indeed time when anyone actually uses the entire cfm of the carb in their ride. More cfm than one uses is wasted in several ways.

A good adage is: You can't fool mother nature....

I have spent the past few days with the King of the Hammers.

It is interesting to talk to the crews and explore the what works and what doesn't with them.

Seems the competition circuit is focusing on engine performance factors that make a difference.

Key point is fuel injection is the hot ticket.

So, you want to screw with the carb on an engine.

Well, any engine runs optimum with a specific amount of fuel delivered.

Apply more than the engine can handle and the engine will choke.

Apply less than required and the engine will starve with a resulting loss of power.

You sound like you are expecting to apply more fuel than the engine requires and expect a performance increase.

In other words, you have unrealistic expectations.

sounds like you're right. well my engine didn't come with a 2bbl, so if i need to change carbs, what's a solid 2bbl carburetor to use?

next q - will adapting a 2bbl carb to a 4bbl intake have any negative side affects? i don't see how, but i want to cover all the bases

I think I would use that small 4 barrel carb. BUT I'd make sure the back barrels had a lot of trouble opening. Those back ones open with vacuum. There should be a diaphram with vac and a spring on the opening side. Them springs can be changed out with stronger ones.
First I'd drive it to see if and when it falls on it's face.. If does that would prolly be the back barrels opening too soon..ie..needs stronger spring rate.
It may be that the thing is already programmed to open SLOWLY or only under high vac.. So I'd at least try the thing.

It hurts to say this but...here goes...the dauntless if cammed correctly and has axle gears, tire size and a transmission (manual) that are all matched well.
That POS little engine can use every bit of the CFMs of a 390 Holley 4bbl. Side hung float kit and a couple baffles and it will crawl well too.
Only folks who don't work with the 225 offen are critical of its power. On the bad side...they will blow that goofy offset crank shaft clean in half, parts like the headers you are looking for don't exist...They have issues with aftermarket electronic igitions (pertronix)..AC delcos work if you can find them.
On my flatty, I ran two passenger side manifolds so that I could run a single front drop y pipe system to avoid the crap of dual exhaust.
If you are 1 tooth off the on the distributer, it will have 1/2 power on three cyl, wire walking does not work on a odd fire 225. You can confirm this with a power balance test. Three will drop a lot of RPM 3 will drop a bit. When right they will drop evenly.
If I had to run a Buick again, I'd stick with point ignition. Delco takes up too much space.

so then how do I make SURE I have my distributor in correctly? i set cyl 1 to top dead, and lined it up, and all
but if what you're saying is true, i can't help but wonder if there's a better way

If you have a 225 and not much budget for a nice small block..do the basics have enjoy. the little odd fire will make good poop if you use as a basic engine. The jeep 4.0 I6 is similar...it'll take a few mods, but strokers and all sorts of expensive mods don't create a V8, never have never will. A nice Gen3 5.3 engine will out HP out torque and way out MPG a stroker 4.7 I6 any day.

I am always very careful with those old ladies.. I measure the circumference of the balancer and then divide by 360* and make a mark on the balancer with a FILE and then paint that mark with a paint pen. I make this mark at + or - 37* advanced. Then I make a mark at about half way back to the TDC mark.
By doing this I can easily observe the timing advance compared to rpm. As I slowly advance the throttle I can observe the timing.. When the springs come in and how much the vac advance is.. And when all the timing is in and at what rpm.. This is impossible to do with modern engines. However with an older lady like that one, it's a good thing.
You can find lots about your engine with this method.

do the basic still time, TDC and such, when you get it running, do the power balance test and if it shows three strong and three weak, at lease try (engine off) lifting the dist and moving it one tooth either direction and trying it again.
