Gen II Sunroof Problems
      #1183676 - 10/31/09 03:55 PM

A month or so ago noticed the headliner above the passenger seat was damp. Did not think much of it, figured I left the sunroof open. Well now that the rainy season is here in the Northwest the passenger seat is sitting in a puddle of water. Anyone else had problems with the Gen II sunroof leaking? Do you think it is a problem with the gasket?

Also, the sunroof opens very slow. I"m concerned the motor is going to burn up. I guessing the sunroof needs some kind of lube. Has anyone tried lubing the sunroof? What did you use?

Thanks,

~ Jon

The drain hoses are probably clogged. You can unclog them with some weed wacker wire or even a peice of Cable TV cable.

You can open the sun roof in Seattle? Agree with scottiesharpe, check drain hoses. The hoses drain down by the rear of the wheel wells. The top of front ones are accessable through the roof, but the rear will have to be cleaned from the bottom. One of mine was blocked by a mud wasp and caused a leak on hills. You can also spray from a water hose from the bottom, but be careful of too much flow. As for slow performance you can clean and grease the slides and check for adjustment of the drive gear clutch. Use a light grease as thick ones tend to give more resistance. I also find that the motor works better with the engine running.

Taking the sunroof apart isn't too difficult and worth the time to clean it up properly. I posted a fix in the diesel section of this forum a while back with detailed instructions. My sunroof didn't open at all when I bought my truck and since I had my Pajero shipped from Japan, surprise! when it arrived the sunroof framwork (stamped steel) that surrounds the glass was all rusty.

What I ended up doing was undoing everything and pulling the glass out (put a blanket on the roof so you don't scratch the paint taking it out. Then once the glass was removed, I cleaned all the rust, mud and dirt out of the channels and slide rails, lubed up the rubber gasket on the glass with a good silicon rubber spray, lubed the fame rails with a white lithium grease and slapped it all back together. Two years later and still works great. Make sure to clean out the drains for sure as mentioned above and if you notice it is slowing again down the road, just give the rails a wipe and relube and it should all be good again.

My sunroof sounds like bits of metal shavings are in the tracks haha. This might be a good sunday hungover project for me.

Since grease will hold dirt/dust, how advisable is it to instead use something else like a graphite lube that dries after it's applied??

i think the graphite lube might be a good idea.

mine was quiet but seemed to operate a little slow. i never had a chance to compare it to any others though.
