having problems with this U-joint
      #1184640 - 11/08/09 12:13 AM

I have my r. driveshaft out while measuring pinion angle.
I got a new 450 joint at NAPA for this slipyoke end. This is to get me by for awhile to make a couple 100 mile round trips to the yards for CVC M.S. front driveshaft search. I wasn't planning on this joint lasting that long, just untill I get the pinion angle modified.
Well this joint ain't gonna last the trip to the yards...

At the slipyoke joint one of the caps is moving inside the mounting hole. I removed the u joint and I can push a u- joint cap thru one of the mounting holes in the driveshaft proper with my thumb. I can't do this in the other 3 holes.
Not sure how this hole got this loose. Maybe the P-450 that was in there had a cap made too small leading to a domino effect of beating the hole bigger. There is now visable damage , it's just too loose. I don't think the snap ring will hold this together very long , maybe not even 1 trip to the yards.

Loctite Stud and bearing mount. Make sure the parts are clean and if yoiu need to take it apart use some heat.

I've done this and it lasted well over 2000mi until I could find a new slip yoke. Take a good look at the tcase output shaft bushing, too.

All I had was some Gel high strength threadlock. I don't like that stuff.
I used green Sleeve retainer to glue the cap. I don't have to ever remove it , this shaft is toast.
The main driveshaft is where the damage is.
I have a newish custom Bronze bushing in my rear cover. I hope it's not damaged.
Man I wish these driveshafts were machined cleaner. I can't tell if it's bent or out of square. Messing aropund with this bad shaft I don't think I could ever do one of these things , even using this new KOYO I have with it's clip ring assortment.
A couple more days untill another yard seach. I think I can make it , the glue seems to be holding.

I got the LWB driveshaft back from the shop that I left it at when I had them swap its slipyoke on to my SWB shaft. I couldn't believe it was still there. The guy that did that job is no longer there. That leaves me with having the shaft made about 60 miles south of here. The guy there has a good reputation , so it will be worth it.

???What's your alls opinion on Birfield versus Double Carden joints???

Not a pro by any stretch of the imagination but...... If it was me I'd say go birfield, been used forever on about all yoter solid axle shafts with good luck.

Double Cardan looks like a borderline complicated mess that I've never dealed with

Best of luck with with whatever you do.

No expert either. I think Charlie brought up some good points over in your other thread, Dave. The double cardon is a good solid unit and is more forgiving of angle than a single joint. The Birfield may strong on axle shafts, but I'm not so sure about the direct torque of a driveshaft. Lots to think about, Dave. Have you trolled other forums to see if you can gleen any useful info?
