Motor oil in transmission?
      #1183879 - 11/02/09 11:19 AM

(Edit: On my 89 Raider)

Ok, yesterday I got down to "replace all gear oil" on my truck to-do list. It was all super nasty, especially the limited slip rear diff, which is probably not limited slip anymore judging by the metal shavings on the drain plug.

But I was still amazed when I opened the transmission drain plug and motor oil came out instead of gear oil. I haven't driven the truck much since I bought it last month, but I did think that the transmission felt a little rough. Not many metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug, at least. Given the maintenance record of the previous owner (never any maintenance), I figure it's been driven like this for about 2 years.

I guess I'm going to fill it back up with gear oil and just drive it, but anything special I should do? (Besides find out who did it and beat them silly?)

When I first started reading that I thought you meant an auto tranny. I guess motor oil isn't the absolute end of the world in a manual trans, good thing you caught that though.

MarcDurant drive it for a couple hundred miles and flush again and repeat till the gear oil looks and smell like "normal".

It's not unheard of (my Isuzu 5-spd manual tranny used ordinary Multigrade oil), but I've never heard of a Mitsu tranny with sump oil.

Well, it sure does shift smoother with gear oil in it! I let it drain overnight to get all of the old oil out and refilled with cheap gear oil. I'll check it in a few weeks.

Also checked my lsd rear while I had the truck on jackstands, and it seems to still be functional - at least under light loads.

I also noticed last night that the EGR system has been stripped off of my engine - good luck passing emissions like that! Looks like it's back to the junkyard.

Some people will run motor oil in the winter instead off gear oil. When it gets cold gear oil gets even thicker so it makes for crappy shifting opposed to motor oil witch aint as thick. Then when summer comes around they put gear oil back in.
