My Halloween Project
      #1183822 - 11/01/09 10:45 PM

I got the Diamante home Friday which was to say the least a "fun" trip .

I got it home and was sitting around with my buddy Saturday night and decided to get wrenching .

First the hood

Then the Front axles

More random crap and motor mounts and ready to hook up and out.

We had it out in about 3-4 hours engine trans together. The Diamante belongs to my friend who joined the navy. Timing belt snapped a week prior to basic and bent valves so I am going to rebuild it for him.

I'd like to see you drop that in a Montero and see if it will run with a Montero ECU plus see how the power band works with Diamante cams and 10:1 pistons. I'm pretty sure nobody on here has that engine in a Montero yet.
If you go to the trouble I won't have too .

FrankR has had a diamante block in his truck running montero pistons and a Diamante cam.. but it was also supercharged.. he could give some more insight on the Diamante cam, It's my inderstanding that it's not so much greater with the Monty's gearing and torque band offroad.

I do have (HAD, actually - it's now been crushed) a SOHC Diamante block.... with custom 9.05:1 pistons that are approximately equal in CR to the Montero (8.9:1) pistons. The Diamante block is a bit stronger than the Montero block, but not at all necessary for a N/A 3.0L engine. For N/A use, the Montero block is fine - but the Diamante block might allow a little longer wear life for rings and cylinder bores due to the stiffer block skirt. If you're buying a JY block to do a rebuild, the Diamante SOHC engine block and heads are a good choice.

The Diamante heads are identical to the Montero heads except for the cams, which are quite different. The Diamante cams have 4° more duration and are retarded 7° for inlet valve closing, which makes for a lazy engine on the bottom end and pushes the torque up the rpm band considerably. The Diamante cams are not a good match for a relatively heavy offroad truck with 4.625 gearing. Once in top gear and on the highway, they're ok, but getting there isn't as elegant as with the Montero cams. If you're willing to install offset bushings, the cams can be rolled forward to the same inlet valve closing point as the Montero cams - which should restore lost dynamic CR caused by the retarded Diamante cams. That change should also move the torque back to where it's more useful for the Montero's weight and gearing.

Using the 10.0:1 Diamante flat-top pistons will add about 5HP, but won't give enough torque to cover up the loss from the cams below 2500rpm. The main thing those pistons will do is give a slightly crisper throttle response and make the engine into an interference engine.

Changing the ECU to the Diamante one won't likely help much, either.

Frank

If the pistons are cracked from the impact, would Montero pistons fit making the engine non interference? Sorry, thinking out loud.
