Mitsubishi Meet, Greet, 'N Wheel @ Uwharrie NC ~ 10/22-10/25
      #1180266 - 10/08/09 01:59 PM

It has been a while since the last Meet N' Greet, so here we are at the 2nd big trip of the year. The event lasts from Thursday the 22nd through Sunday the 25th. The main day will be Saturday, with most people staying Fri/Sat/Sun. Meet up time will be 9am-10am on Saturday for those not staying the weekend. We will hit the trails at approx. 11am. The group will be meeting/staying at the Arrowhead Campgrounds, there are still sites available:

Arrowhead Campgrounds

Current list of attendees/possible attendees:

DRaider90-Dodge Raider
SandhillRaider-Dodge Raider
Mad Scientist-Mitsubishi Montero
Pastor-Mitsubishi Montero
Icysyrup-Mitsubishi Montero

The Uwharrie National Forest is located an hour and half outside of Charlotte NC:

If you are using Mapquest/Google Maps this is the address for the Eldorado Outpost:

The Eldorado Outpost
4021 NC Route 109
Troy, NC 27371

The Outpost is also where you can get your day trail pass ($5), gas, supplies, air up, etc. As mentioned Day Passes are $5 a day per vehicle, and season passes are $30 (season runs April 1st- December 15th).

We will be wheeling trails appropriate from stock trucks to modified. But incase you don't want to take your truck out there are always seats to ride along. Here is the current 2009 trail map:

Saturday's dinner will be at Zeno's Italian Restaurant located about 15 minutes from the campgrounds/trails. Bring your appetite because portions are very generous.

Don't worry if you don't live in NC, people travel from Pennsylvania, Flordia, Georgia, Virginia to make this trip. It is worth the drive for a weekend of Mitsubishi Wheeling Fun.

First keep in mind the Arrowhead Campgrounds are a paved facility with the majority of their sites having electricity. Its almost like a paved driveway with a parking area, grill, fire pit, picnic table, and electricity. There is a bath house with showers/toilets, and there are water hook ups etc. For the last how ever many years I have been going I sleep in my truck, which is an option. But I understand for people with families etc and any sane person this isn't always the best option.

So there are Hotels in the town of Troy that is about 20 minutes from the trails. Googling Hotels Troy NC came up with this:

Google Maps Link

I would stay as close to Highway 109 as you can. Here are some approx distances:

Uwharrie Cabin Rentals: 10-15 minutes
Uwharrie Mountain Lodge: 20-25 minutes
Executive Inn: 25-30 minutes
Days Inn Biscoe: 30-35 minutes

Only downside to this is you have to get up a little bit earlier than those staying at the campgrounds. Hope this helps.

I will try to take an updated pic soon. It is not as built as it once was. I took off the body lift and sold the bumper and winch and took off the roof rack. It still has a snorkel, 33x10.5 BFG ATs on factory LS aluminums, 95 SR rear axle, SR springs, heavy duty torsion bars, and the ultra rare in the US maybe the only installed factory jerry can holder.

I de-built it when I started driving 1 hour to work and never having time to wheel it. Then I started making less money and got laid off. I do plan to keep this one forever though. I took off the con-ferr rack because water got in the tubes and started rusting from the inside out and started spliting the tubes apart. I want to make a custom rack using the cross bars and mounts from the con-ferr. My truck is not as cool as Angelo's or Landraiders or a lot of the guys out west.

My 93SR I sold the ECB bumper. Phil has it on his awesome JDM Pajero. It has the worn out 32x11.5 MTs on black rockcrawler rims, rear ARB locker, bigger coils and airbags, and an Airflow snorkel.

I really want to get my raider down there but I'm stuck going to surface rescue swimmer school, all of oct. is there any plans to do this Uwharrie again soon or is there anyone close that might just want to go one weekend, it take me about 5 hrs to get down there but to get a day of wheel'n would be always worth it, i wanted to get one last Trail Raid in before i start the axle swap, just incase i break something important.

I don't think the company intended that ...they are willing to stand behind it ;but I've decided to rebuild my own.)Maybe next year. Went out with NCDW and RDTH this past Saturday and the trails were nice and slippery. I didn't wheel because we got there late, but I had plenty of fun playing trail guide/spotter. Here is what little video/pictures I got:

It was a nice pre-run for the big trip. Hope to see everyone out there this weekend.

Your going to have to remove me from the list of attendees. I had planned on going and was getting packed this weekend when we decided to do a quick trip on a local trail this weekend.

Well I left at 2pm and got back at 1145pm that night. One person had crossed a deep water hole and hydro-locked the motor....so we spent 2 hours getting it running again after draining the cylinders. Then after that we went on further and I couldnt gain ground up the hill locked f/r it was so slick...so them being open/open I was left strapping them and at some points winching myself and having one of them strapped behind me at the same time in order to get everone up the trail.
I ended up breaking a front axle where it shouldnt have broke...(really dont know why it did...its very odd) and in the process of getting all of us out my winch is now acting up and I have a good misfire somewhere that I need to figure out.
The axle will be fixed by wednesday but that misfire concerns me greatly as I dont like going out on the trail "wondering" if I will complete the run, or "handicapped" you could say. This is the closest I have ever made it to going to Uwharrie and I am kinda mad all this happened so that I cant. But not much I can do.

I am going to try and track down the misfire today and see but I think its just the plugs and not the coil packs. Its a 6hr job to do the dang plugs on it though and I dont know where I am going to find time to get those done.

I have gone through 2 on front driver now...1 front passenger. Now at Orielys though they are "Lifetime warranty" so they said just to bring in the broken one and badabing....new one.

You been to River Rock? I camp and ride with other crawlers that are WAAAAY more built than mine. Most of them bearing very little resemblance to the vehicle they started life as. Steve's done a helluva job with the place and it's very challenging. We could have fun playing on some of the bypasses though

Its really not that impressive considering 3 wheels are still on the ground, but it did manage to pretzel my exhaust in the process. 2nd time now that something at Uwharrie has bent my exhaust to crap.

Still waiting on the pictures others took but here is SOME of the Daniel Damage from Friday's Run:

And the root that did the damage on Daniel:

(check out the image name for my feelings on that)

And oh yeah, Mark should remember this look of my exhaust:

(Except when Mark was with I did it on Poser Rock, this time it was the hole during the Dickey Bell hill climb where I did the 3 wheeling)

This time I am not paying $125 to get it fixed. Peter (Isuzu guy) hack sawed it off right there on the trail at the glass pack. I am going to leave it that way.

ouch Eli. I hate seeing body damage on vehicles as much as the next guy. I cant say anyone enjoys body damage

Those roots really start coming out of the ruts after years and years of wheeling and rain. On some trails, its hard to avoid. Out on the trails, you gotta pick your lines carefully.

Good pics. I used to know these trails like the back of my hand just from looking at the pics, now I hardly notice them. Glad you guys had fun out there in that clay-like mud, makes it a whole new ball game!

Reuben, glad to hear that locker helped out alot. Makes positive traction a reality now.

Here are some more pictures:

Being winched sideways after the Z-Turn while being pined up against the infamous tree. Have never touched that tree in my years of doing Daniel till this trip.

Bottom of what used to be the bypass for the Rocky Hill Climb on Daniel:

Doing the "little ledge" on Daniel:

Doing the main ledge on Daniel:

Tiny bit off chamber between ledges on Daniel, where I busted my headlight bezel actually:

Another Dickey Bell shot of the Hill Climb:

When the Root did its damage on the climb before little ledge on Daniel:

Haha Eli is stuck in his truck, Mike using vice grips to bend back the rain gutter so I could get out:

Finally out of Daniel at the Double Parking lot, now its almost dark:

Great pics Eli I wish I could have been there that day...may be

Looking at your truck last night reminded me of one of those utilitarian looking trucks you see on those Russian off-road videos. I think it's a boxy body and tall, skinny tires. I like it a lot.

Damn dumb forum glitch or something. I just wrote out a long post about my trip. When I hit submit it it told me something about hitting the back button.

Cliff's notes

Ruben and I got tired of waiting around for the guys that drove the trails the previous couple of days. Ruben, Eli, and myself went riding with the Isuzu guys not too far behind. I had to be pulled up one hill because my BFG ATs could not grip the slick wet mud/clay hill. The trails were different than 3 years ago when I went. There were too many people which clogged up a couple trails. At camp, there were a lot of good poeple and a lot of good food. I am ready to go again.

No pics from me, I forgot my camera.

That isn't even dirt really on the inside, that just a little bit of Uwharrie mud. Need to wheel the trails IN THE RAIN and then you will get some mud in there.

I have some non-action pictures I will post up later. Till then trail re-cap:

Arrived at 9:30am to an empty campground, found out via my CB that they had just started to head out. Caught up and we did Falls Dam and Dickey Bell, perfect wheeling weather. Pretzeled my exhaust of the hill climb and got some nice 3 wheeling shots. It rained briefly when we were doing the hill climb, but it stopped shortly after.

Ate lunch and hung out waiting on Joe Darlington to show up. People got impatient and wanted to do a trail ride so I offered to take them out on a short run. We did Wolf Den, to Slab Pile (stopped at poser rock for pictures), then cut across the bottom of Rocky Mnt. Loop. Marlin in the VX pop'd a tire on Rocky Mnt. Loop, and we had fun spotting the stock Rodeo with us around the slippery ruts. Headed afterward to the Daniel Trail head parking lot and waited on the group that stayed behind for Joe. We did Daniel and hit the double parking lot just as it got dark. A small group did a rocky mount to saw mill night run, I rode with Peter.

Saturday it was perfect weather until Reuben and Sparkem brought the rain with them. I don't know maybe 5 minutes at the most after they pulled in it started to downpour. We ended up waiting the rain out and got ready to head out. We did Rocky Mount Loop to Saw Mill, then Wolfs Den to Falls Dam.

The trails were even more slippery so we had some fun. We got caught up at a traffic jam on the double ledge before Kodak. That broke up our group so I wasn't able to tell Sparkem and Reuben to take the bypass on Kodak. Another traffic jam ensued. Sparkem and Reuben got stuck after the bypass waiting on Marlin and JP to take their attempts at the rock garden. Everyone ended up backing up and taking the bypass. That is the way it is when its wet, the stuff you can do fairly easy dry becomes impassible.

The Isuzu group stayed behind and we headed on to Saw Mill. Sparkem's A/Ts turned to racing slicks so he had to get strapped up by the rednecks in the Yota that were behind us. To be fair there were trucks with lockers and swampers that couldn't even get up the bypass where Sparkem had to be strapped. Makes me thank god my truck walked up the incline leading into the bypass so easily.

Turns out the Isuzu group stopped for lunch and we were way ahead of them. I radioed back to them and found out their status and decided to head on to Falls Dam. Everything went smoothly except for me denting the crap out of my gas tank and throwing off the sending unit. That was due to me trying to take a different line on the rock ledge, the mud said "Ha ha you aren't taking the left hand line you are going to slide into the middle".

We ended up meeting up with a smaller Isuzu group that had split off from the main Isuzu group at the end of Falls Dam. Reuben had to head home and then Sparkem and I headed back to camp. We beat everyone back and got started on dinner. Sparkem and Chelsea (sp?) cooked up some great food, and combined with the Goulash Janet made, the Chili Mike made, and the Stew another lady made we had A TON of food.

After dinner we sat around the campfire and talked till about 2am (Sparkem and others went to bed earlier). Woke up Sunday morning started packing and head out that afternoon. Was overall a great trip. I just have to start to cope with having so much body damage.

All jokes aside, I bet it comes in handy at the right time. Thought about doing something like that too. Thought about brackets on the rack, but I don't want to add anymore weight up there as is.
