Did anyone get the np231 t-case to work on gen1 auto?
      #1164674 - 06/30/09 11:56 AM

I have seen many posts about this mod, but have not found anyone that has finished it on the gen1 2.6 auto. If it has been done, does that mean that it would also work for an atlas? Twin stick and 4:1's sounds real good to me:)

If the NP231J is the tcase you're talking about, then it should be the same as D300/Atlas. I know nothing of its compatibility to the KM148, though, and don't think anyone here has physically bolted one up to that transmission.

I think the SWBs might have an issue with clearance regarding pinion angle and driveshaft length. NathanC was always trying to get me to take measurements. I don't recall what the final verdict was, but it's close.

I haven't done any measuring, but I think you'd need a Super Short SYE to have good life out of driveshaft components. I installed one in a 231C for my failed Raider project, and it looked like it was good when installed behind the 4.3 and 700R4. I wish I had some numbers for you.

Nathan C bolted one(NP231) to a gen 1 V6 Auto (out of the truck) and posted pics, just for $hits and giggles and it fit. These results were posted years ago, but no ones followed up on it since. I dont belive driveshaft length will be a problem with a single case since its no longer than a mitsu case. SYE kits are cheap, if you put that kit on, you would have longer than stock shaft..

I dont think the SYE would be essential but nice to have and relatively cheap to do.

Also yes, a 23 spline atlas should work, we just need someone to pony up for one and give it a shot. Pull the trigger and let us know.

IT WILL BOLT UP!
That said, you a 23 spline input t-case. Pay attention to the input length. I tested out a long input shaft and it bottomed out. A short would probably work, but if it were me, I would check the length of spline engagement to verify that it is strong enough.

You also need to find the appropriate sized seal for the transmission tail housing. This is not rocket science. It's OD should be the same as the old one, with an ID that matches the OD of the NP231 input shaft. Not hard to do.

Speedometer will need to be sorted out. Not sure what to tell you there. If you convert to an electric speedo, it's pretty easy to deal with.

Shifter will be different. Not hard to do. Novak makes a pretty slick shifter that would probably work well. Or you can get creative and make your own.

Driveshafts will need to be custom made. Again, not rocket science. Install the case, print of the driveshaft spec sheet from Tom Wood's website and crawl under and measure. If it were me doing this to a SWB, I would opt for a SYE to buy a little extra rear driveshaft length.

Here's some crappy cell phone pics to motivate someone to do this.
Forward facing shot. And yes, that's a 2.6 in front of it.

Side shot:

Here's how much shorter the long shaft would need to be to work:

And to give you an idea of t-case length with SYE installed:

I can not believe someone has not done this yet.

Hold on Justice... I happen to have the +$2k just burning a hole in my wallet. Whups. Too late. It burned completely through and must have fallen out earlier cause it's not there any more.

Seriously, I hope someone has the $$$ and cojones to try this out. I would seriously consider it if I knew exactly how an NP231 can mate to our tranny and I had the extra $$$$.

I don't have the $$ yet, but when my house sells...or is it if my house sells? I just might be polish enough to try this:) And yes, I can say that because I am half polish:o

Sorry, I mis-remembered...

That long shaft is no problem. Slap a clocking ring between the case and trans to take advantage of all that spline engagement and gain the advantage of flattening out the belly.

Me either. Like Nathan said it's not rocket surgery.

Atlas 4 speed:
Atlas Short tail 15"
Atlas Long tail 17"

Atlas 2 speed:
Atlas Short tail 11.8"
Atlas Long tail 13.8"

NP 231, 20.5"
Dana 300, 12"

If I remember correctly the 'short tail' doesn't have provisions for a speed sensor - mach or electric.

My Mitsu t-case ('97 5-speed Sport) came out somewhere around 16-17" (longer counting the yoke) if I remember correctly.

Atlas option: Electronic Speedometer/VSS Tailhousing gets you your 'conversion to electric'. This is the same setup as Terra uses in their ultra short SYE - which I have in my Sport with the DD SGI-5. I haven't had so much as a hic cup out of it.

The Atlas is shaped a bit differently than the NP231 and Mitsu cases. If it's a concern, SOME (minor) floorboard mods may be needed so that an Atlas can be clocked reasonably.

IMHO ...

I wouldn't run a 2-speed Atlas. I wouldn't run ANYONE'S 2-speed t-case anymore. Having a wide spread of gears from a 4-speed is AWESOME!

But, if that's what you can afford ... less than 3.8:1 is pointless unless your 'bogging/sand/snow and more than 5:1 is going to drive you insane VERY quickly unless there's some REALLY tall gearing elsewhere to compensate. I can't imagine trying to do ANYTHING with an auto, 4.90s and only 5-6:1. Getting between obstacles in 4:1 is a big enough pain in the .

If you can get one (new or used) the 4-speed 10.34:1 is the way to go! WARNING! The 10.34:1 is a money pit!!! You will immediately start looking for much more difficult obstacles than you used to do which will - of course - lead to many MORE upgrades of other things!

Edward
