Fuel pump issue?
      #1157121 - 05/10/09 10:48 PM

This weekend I was driving home from putting a winch onto my trooper (YAY!!) when it suddenly lost power and died in the middle of the street (BOO!!). I managed to push it into a parking lot and tried to start it. It cranks over fine, but wont start. I called a friend and he looked while I tried to start it and the throttle body wasn't spraying any fuel. I disconnected the line into the fuel filter and had him try to start it, and no fuel came out. I'm guessing its the fuel pump, but wanted some more opinions before I drop $200.oo bucks for a new one. Is there anything else I should check? Are there any alternative solutions?
Thanks

Did you check fuses?

Check the flasher relay. The v6 Troops seems to use it in the fuel pump circuit and I've seen one that would not start until after the flasher was replaced.

Good Luck,
Michael

I did check the fuses, and I noticed that there was a fuel pump relay as well as a fuel pump relay backup. The fuse was good, and i swapped the relays around to see if it made a difference but it didn't. I'll check out the flasher relay. Thanks for the tip!!

OK, so yesterday morning I ordered a new fuel pump. Those things aren't cheap! Last night I went outside on a whim and tried to start it. It fired, but it ran really rough, like it was missing half the cylinders or something. I had to give it a lot of gas pedal to keep it running. I let it die and poked around under the hood, messing with spark plug wires and vacuum lines and such, then tried it again. Same thing, sputtering and smoking and nasty. Let it die, poked around some more then tried it again. Started right up and purred like a kitten. I drove it around the block and it ran fine. I'm so confused. I'll still change out the fuel pump, but now I wonder if its really the issue. I really didn't do anyting to make it better.

Each of the two injectors on your TBI feed one bank of the engine. I have had a problem in the past with a marginal electrical connection to one of the injectors which gave those same symptoms.

You need to find the cause since if one of the injectors is firing only sometimes, you end up running really lean on that side of the engine which can quickly lead to burned valves (the voice of experience).

You might be onto something here, Jim. I didn't really mess with a whole lot last night, but I did unplug each one of the connectors on top of the injectors and then plug it back in. It was after I had done that that it ran fine.
So would this mean that I have a bad injector, or just a funky connection?

I suspect that it is just a bad connector.

Thanks a bunch for the help, Jim. I sure hope that between the new fuel pump and re-securing the connectors on the fuel injectors that I can have most of my issues straightned out. I don't want to be towed again.
Have fun in Moab!! Take lots of pictures.

See the "Moab 2009" thread. I am stuck at home waiting on parts. If I get them we are thinking about a Walker Valley run on Sunday. You up for it?

You know, I could totally do that!! Guess I need to pay more attention to some other threads.
