One swap to consider, The 2.4 from a Sport. This would be a SOHC 16V. Already a RWD and had the latest version of the KM132 gearbox available.
This could well be the nicest improvement for the least work.

That is very interesting - if I find a donor.

The Eagle Talon swap sounds reasonable, too - depending on the intake setup.

I spent about 3 hours on it today and gave up for now..... with thoughts of sending it on to the crusher.

First, I removed the valve cover and unbolted the exhaust manifold - no problems. Then I started stripping the front of the engine..... got as far as removing the crankshaft pulley bolt and found 4 more bolts that apparently are threaded into the crankshaft timing belt sprocket. The problem I found in removing those bolts are that the heads don't have enough clearance to the pulley hub to get a socket on them. Consulting the Haynes manual, it looks like that pulley "hub" should instead be a washer under the bolt, but no amount of banging, prying, cussing and coaxing would get it to turn loose - if that's what it really is. It makes sense that it's a washer, but if so, it's rusted tight to the pulley.

So, I moved on to the intake manifold and found out how nuts I was to think that this itty-bitty head would come off easily. That Mikuni setup is designed by a sadist for a masochist to work on while beating himself over the back with chains.

I don't mind carburetors at all, but there's NO way I have ANY interest in owning a truck with that sort of nonsensical vacuum hose maze.

I've heard about the Webers used on the 2.6L engines - anything simple for the 2.0L?..... like maybe a Holley or Rochester?

If I'm going to keep it, I don't want any vacuum lines other than the brake booster, purge canister and maybe a distributor advance..... and speaking of distributors, would a pre-'89 distributor be a simpler choice?

You don't like those feedback crap do you. I don't blame you.

Take the whole box off the fender and keep it connected to the carb.
Any early carb from a Mitsu will work so a non feedback carb will go on there.
There are 5 bolts on the carb base.
A Holley 5200 works well, obviously an adapter is needed.
I would not bother with a Rochester.

On the front pulley you need to get the 4 little bolts out. a 3/8 drive will do it.
Then the pulley will come off, sometimes reluctantly. There is one dowel locating it.

I was using a 3/8" drive, but there's not enough room for the socket wall between the bolt head and the pulley "hub" or washer. I guess it's a washer that's rusted on there, because you'd have to have an ultra-thin-walled socket to get enough clearance to fit on the heads of the bolts. I'll try some PB Blaster on it tomorrow and let it soak for a while and see if it'll come off.

What about a Holley/Weber 32/36 - will this one work?

web page

If I use a non-feedback carburetor, I can get rid of that box on the fender, right?

That carb is a Holley 5200, good carbs. I have run them on my Colts for 33 years now.

See if you can get an angled hit on that washer, or pry from the side of it. It should pop out.

I almost forgot I have a new Holley 4010 (2300 flange) "J-tube" marine carburetor with integral bowl and electric choke. It might be a little large at 350 cfm - and I would have to somehow adapt the bellcrank to the Mitsu cable end.

Which would work best?

I thought a 4010 was a 4BBL? I am not familiar with them obviously.
I would expect you would have a tough time getting the idle circuit to run sweet on a small engine.

I do know the Pinto/ Vega Holley works well.

Look around for an early pickup, Montero or Sapporo carb from a 2.0 or 2.6. There may be a nice one out there.

Ooops - you're right. I had it in the wrong box. That one's a marine 2300. I need to see what the cfm rating is.

Good good, after mixing up the wide and narrow blocks earlier in the thread I was sure hoping I still remembered something from the V8s I had in the past.
If I recall the 2300 is either a 350 or 500 CFM single shaft carb.
If power with a 2 bbl were a goal OK.
But the crude and non adjustable idle circuit would be horrible to live with.

This version has idle screws, but it's probably not the best choice.

I think I want to get rid of all of the feedback engine controls if there is an early distributor that will work.

I found this Eagle Talon DOHC engine today and the first thing I noticed is that the intake and exhaust sides are swapped side-to-side. I'm guessing that head can't be turned around like the V engines:
