>>>*Yep, I am at that point. They sent me the little form that told me I would now be in the government system.
Then here came the ads and the government book. The number of ads wanting to sell me insurance would heat my house for a winter if I wanted to burn paper....
So I sat down to read the government manual. It starts out telling me to sign up between a date window or it costs more, one place says 3 months before to six months after I turn 65 but not until October or maybe January unless it is March, (see page 55-60) and I have to have part A and part B unless I don't want part A and part B but if I don't have it I can't get part C or part D but those parts aren't government, they are private companies (see pages 78-80) and even though it is covered the copay is now double and by the way?
There is that "deductible" and we only get to be sick a certain number of days each year, after that please hand over the house.
Some of them want me to send them a list of the medicines I take so they can determine how much I will pay. So after a couple of weeks of asking "How much?" with the answer always "It depends" I still haven't figured the da*n thing out.
As near as I can tell we can go visit the Doctor and chat as long as we aren't really ill. If seriously ill (see pages 111-134) that isn't covered.
Well...maybe...it depends.....
They did write the thing in nice big letters so I can read it without my glasses, though.
*Nice of them....
I even tried to convert my own policy and tell the goverment to stuff it.
*Nope. Too old, go on Medicare. There was one company, the cost was about what I earn each year.
*Well, what I wished I earned, anyway.
I can condense the manual into a few sentences......
1. You have paid into the system for decades, thank you.
2. Now pay even more until death, please.
3. If ill, please die quickly.
4. In the event of long term illness, see line 3.
*Lord...
Now what would be wrong with a "catastrophic" policy, like one that pays everything over a certain deductible? That makes sense but what is up with this needing three different policies cr*p?........*EB

I understand EB.
I spent much of last year working to get a medical business off the ground. I worked with numerous patients trying to get home medical equipment that they desperatly needed and had nothing but trouble with medicare. Then after struggling to get equipment approved they would put off paying us for 45 days. I do not look forward to dealing with those guys as a patient.
Good luck EB....

EB You can get a free checkup but you must do it within so many days after your on the plan.
Of course I never open the book until many months had passed, so I guess I saved the tax payers some money.

Out of curiosity...
Knowing the above (btw, Mom's a nurse and deals with this a lot), any idea why we're so keen on having the gov't take over the entire health care system? I honestly can't figure it out. Not trying to instigate, just to understand.

There's still a chance she could end up VP (sadly).

It has come out that a printer the Obama campaign uses has printed out an Obama Bayh (pronounced "by", or hopefully "bye") bumper sticker. So, I believe Hillary is out for good.
I don't know who "we" are but the American people, I believe, do not want a universal/socialist healthcare system. Even Canadians have expressed their disapproval because they often have to come here to get treatment they cannot get in their own country. (due to waiting lists) Last year the UK put out a statement telling pregnant women not to come to the hospital to have their baby unless there was some complication. Their recommendation, get a midwife. Socialist medicine is failing all over the world and for some reason the dems still want to push the issue. Oh, that's right. The uneducated think it's a good idea and will vote for anything that is a handout to them and the power that comes along with socialist systems is just too tempting to most liberal politicians.

Let me first say this. Just because the Feds screw up everything does'nt mean they are incapable of efficiency and success. Because the Feds screw everything we now have an argument against any kind of socialized healthcare and some of these folks making that argument would have the Feds empowered to run a lot more. I dont totally buy into that argument. I now know that the real argument against a socialized healthcare system is lack of competition. Truly lack of any competition will make any service suffer. The fact that we dont watchdog our government is kind of like lack of competition therefore handing healthcare to the Feds is a bad idea.
Although I've changed my mind on the healthcare issue, I still would rather my tax dollars go towards a program helping the poor rather than bombing them. You never know what little mind is going to invent the next breakthrough tech....it would be nice if they all had an equal chance to thrive.
Just my idealistic 2 cents
