engine swap ideas / help
      #1084531 - 03/12/08 01:43 AM

ok, I had done a post about engine swaps b4.. but I had another question.. I was told a toyota supra's motor would fit in with my current drive train. I was also told that those engines cost a lot of money.. Is there any other 6 cylinder motors that would fit in there with little or no alteration???.. what about the inline 6 from a toyota land cruiser?? my mom has a '97 land cruiser and that motor runs smooth as ever.. I was either thinking about doing this or doing the v6 chevy conversion.. I want to stay with toyota if possible.
thanks in advance, Anthony

Well depends on if you have a 22re or 3vze. If you have the v6 that a tacoma 3.4 would bolt in to that tranny and motor mounts, you just have to do the exhaust, wiring, and other odds and ends.

Also really deoends on the supra motor that you want to put in there. A 7mge or 6mge non turbo(which in my opinon is what you want unless it is a total street queen) from older supras are not that expensive now adays, and all you need there is the bell housing off the supra tranny and it should bolt up to the tranny in your truck. I know that the clutch from the supra(you want that too) has the slave cylinder on the opposite side, and of course there is all the other stuff that you have to do for a motor swap.

Then there is always the 4.3 vortec(well vortec prefered), and then the small block v8....

Just start calling junk yards, hitting up craigs list and researching through here and pirate 4x4, there are a ton of swap write ups out there and just find what will suit your needs, budget, and skill.

Go to our Toyota Tech Archive and open the window to 'view all'. 4RunRick did a 7Mgte swap. At the end of the post, I put his updated links; you'll also see his feedback on his efforts.

Supra only requires that you use the bell housing from the supra. I have picked entire donors for 500-800 bucks. I have done the 5MGE and 7MGE as well as my current 4.3 which blows em both away.

Wonder if anyone has thought of or tried a 3 liter V6 out of a Ford Ranger. Might be a little more frugal with gas and still have some reasonable power.

Dont bother with that.
If you want a ford motor, put in a 302.
V6? Either a 4.3 chevy, 3.8 buick (if you want a carbie) or a 3.4 toyota
v8, either the 302, or a chevy small block. 302 will be the easiest tho, because of the front mounted distributor and overall smaller sizes.

Remove toyota engine, tranny, and mounts, install ford engine and tranny. Fabricate engine mounts from scrap. Make new drive shafts and crossmember. Splice in Ford wiring harness.

Thanks for the ideas guys.. I really appreciate it.. with gas prices skyrocketing.. I may go for a smaller, yet larger than stock motor.. somewhere in the range of what the ford ranger had.. I wanted to do the chevy 350 short block conversion, but I dont know how much its gana cost me. both in gas and parts. lol

If I did this motor swap.. what would I use for a clutch??? or is it the same transmission?

You would have to use the Ford transmission and clutch since there is no adapter to use the toyota transmission that I'm aware of.

Your probably better off selling your truck and buying a ranger.

i'd agree with adam.
I wouldnt even bother with a ranger engine, it will get the same MPG as any v8 you put in, but have less power, my cousins 03' 4.0 v6 ranger eats gas as much as my 3.4 4runner... which is no prize hog to begin with. bout the same 0-60 too.. SLOW...
in a little 2wd reg cab they are quick, in a x-cab or SUV.. not a chance, not worth swapping.
If you want a ford, do the 302... it'll get the same mpg as a 3.0 or a 4.0 but with way more torque... you could even run 4.10's with 33's or 35's to drop your highway RPM's to get even better mileage...

You guys do raise a good point..and having to throw in a body lift to accommodate the engine would allow me to run 35's w/o too many problems.. that would lower my rpm. but seeing as my 1/2 ton chevy used to do 60 around 1500 rpm.. and that truck hits 2600 rpm to do 60... Not sure if what the mileage would be. lol.. I'm guessin' around 8 mpg's. lol.. anyone have any idea?
