Just getting started with this swap. Picked up the Rear end off ebay for 100 bucks a couple weeks ago.
Anyways the first and important thing I got done so far is mate the diff side Yoke from an SR driveshaft onto my 89 short Drive shaft. The U-joints are a perfect fit just as sparkem said. Also to note, the centering rings on both yokes are the same size so drilling of the diff flange would be easy if I didnt already have the SR shaft to get a bigger yoke from. I'll try to take some pics as I progress.

Cool $100 is a steal for a big axle with factory locker and disc brakes. You cant beat that. An arb is what, $700+. I have about 1600miles on my rear end and transmission swap. No problems, but my t-case leaks. Everything on mine bolted up. I have still not hooked up the locker mini pump. I need some air hose and need to run some wires. I did not change anything with the brakes. All I did was bolt up the brake hose to the new axle and put new hoses all the way around. Works great. I did not put any spacers on the front either. Noone will notice the wider rear. Might be more noticable on the SWB, I dont know. Probably not. Post some pics when done. If you run into any problems, post up.
Find some gen2 springs to put in at the same time as the swap like I did.

The 89 Drive Shaft(left) with the 96SR yoke installed. I used the 96 U-Joint. The Koyo part numbers on the cap apperear to be the same and are identical as far as I could tell. Fit was perfect.
 the complete hybrid shaft.
 Rear end removed..
Staging 96 Sr rear end for install..this is as far as I got will try yo complete it by tommorow..
Yea Sparkem I already had gen 2 spring so I'll be putting those back in, Should be a good swap Gaining disks, springs, Locker, stronger axle and diff and strnger trailing arms to boot. Also got a new set of KYB's so the rear end should be good to go

One thing I forgot to tell you. If you dont have the driveshaft bolts from the gen2 you will need bigger bolts. 17mm heads and nuts. I actually am using the ones from when I swapped a lower ball joint. I did not have them because the junkyard pulled the axle for me and lost them. They would not let me doit. So they got to charge labor and I still got a locked disced (is that a word?), stronger, 90k miles less than what I had, assembly with drive shaft and arms and mini pump for great deal. Suckers.
Those gen2 rims are cool with mud tires.

Thanks for the tip. I was going to try to find some bolts today but I have some extra front end parts laying around I can get lower ball joint bolts from...

Great work. Myself and my buddy who bought my old truck, (mitsulvr) and Jerzboy too, are all wanting to do this. If we could find three locking rear axles it might be worth the shipping to have em dragged up here...
Thanks for posting this up J. You're inspiring the rest of us.

I'm glad it's going easy for you. It seems that everyone has a different experience with this swap. Mine was a major pain with the driveline issues and the fact that my u-joints were smaller than the SR u-joints. I ended up buying the driveline from cap510 and having a hybrid built by a local driveline shop.
Whatever problems you experience will probably seem really mild when compared to the extra stopping power of disk brakes and the extra traction of a rear locker.

Huntin Ebay and carparts.com right now. This is an awesome way to get a better rear end. Please be as detailed as possible in the process, (ie lots of pics). I'm a visual kinda guy. So, when i get one these diffs, should I get the coils and everything while I'm at it? Gosh, I'm excited And, if I can find one with a decent front suspension, should I get the genII UCA's? Anybody who's done this swap already can chime in too on this, it'll help alot. Thx for all the input so far, and tolerance of my ignorance

All you do is unbolt the your current rear axle and bolt up the new one. Everything goes in the same place. You dont have to, but try and get the gen2 springs, trailing arms, ebrake cables, the mini air pump (located under the middle pass seat in the drug smuggle compartment), and the flange off of the driveshaft at the axle end with bolts. I wrote some stuff in my own post about the swap. Also make sure you get the correct axle. Not all gen2s had this bigger locking axle. Some came with the 9in open diff, and some earlier SRs had the 9in open with 4.875 gears (locker optional). The gen2 rear shocks will not work on the gen1.
Justice, did you reuse your old trailing arm bushings, the gen2 ones I had were different? I used my old ones.

Almost done..Used the Gen1 Trailing arm Bushings on Gen 2 trailing arms. Had company over today so I Only got a couple of hours wrenching in. All that is left to do is finish connecting the e brake cable and then The moment of truth, installing the drie shaft.
