IFS Lift
      #970008 - 02/09/07 01:24 PM

Ok, so after some thinking and a close look at my abilties and needs. Ive decided to hold off on the SAS until my ability with welding and torching catch up. but till then i would like to put an IFS lift on my 89 yota pickup. the problem is that i spent all my time researching SAS parts. i was wondering if any of you guys knew of a good IFS suspension lift kit i could go with. im working with about $1000 - $2000, and plan on doing all the labor myself.

If you have that budget then do a SAS. You can even pay someone to do the welding with $2k. The 4" IFS lifts are just not that rugged. They produce too much leverage on the factory brackets. I only have one becuase I got it for $300 used, and would not pay more than that for a brand new one.

I have completely destroyed my ifs, and yes I beat on it when I need to, but its by no means recklessly. There /IS NOT/ an unbent bracket in my front end (excluding steering). I have broken and repaired all three diff drop brackets at least twice. The ifs subframe is bent backwards (again, the drop brackets provide to much leverage and the factory frame bends). My front diff is slanted about 2" to the passenger side and the CV axle is no longer long enough. All of this happened through normal trail riding, mudding and rock crawling in nh (nothing compaired to out west). Took about a year before everything added up and is not un repairable. Basically I have a 2wd truck right now... which is why I have a solid axle in my basement ready to be welded in.

Long story short, the IFS lift wont last long... do the SAS

My 4Runner was professionally SAS'd. I have the receipt. $1200 total bill including installation of a crawler case. If you have $2000 for lift alone, you should definitely go SAS now. It's only going to cost you ~$200 to have the hanger welded on and the shackle holes drilled/tubes welded. The rest can be done at home.

if you can install the sas yourslelf just bring all the brackets to be welded to a shop have them weld the front truss and holes in the frame...then drive the truck home and cut the ifs stuff out....you dont need a torch but it will be easier

Not sure what size tires you are looking to fit, but there are some low cost "recipes" for fitting 33s on an IFS truck on the web page below:

haha jared. i seem to rememer a certain blue pickup about 5' off the ground at on paticular time. beat on it? noooooo.

but yeah, what they said. if you are gonna actually wheel it, do the sas and save your money from doing it twice.

ok for tire size, i think that i have 30's on there right now with a 2 or 3 inch body lift, there may be more on it(leaf spring Hangers?) but i doubt it. i am aiming to eventually be at 35" tires and would like to be rid of the body lift. a 4 or 5 inch lift would be nice. this is my daily driver, witch was one of the reasons for staying with the IFS. But if there isn't anything of quality out there then i probably will go with the SAS.

If you are not ready to dent sheetmetal, don't worry about the SAS. You won't be on trails where you need it. You can fit 33's inexpensively and reliably. Take a look at 4crawler.com and also Sonoran steel to see what I mean.

The IFS can be very very strong for a small amount of dough
