Anyone able to help me determine why i dont have any spark out of my 95 Kia Sportage? The check engine light comes on when i turn the key, but it stays on until i shut it off. It will not run, no spark at all, changed the camshaft pos. sensor, the crank pos. sensor, new battery, new timing gears and belt, getting voltage to each sensor in the run position, but the only fluctuation in output voltage is the cam pos. sensor, the crank pos. sens. simply drops down but remains constant while she is turning over. Voltage is present at the coil packs on run, but it doesnt fluctuate while the engine turns over, stays constant. Im thinking ECU?

can you read the codes?

Let us know what they are so we can do a bit better than a stab in the dark.

Pull a plug out of the head, plug it back into the wire and try firing it? Should see the spark. If you don't see the spark there is something wrong in the coil. Check each plug for spark.

You forgot to mention, when doing this, you need to let the threads of the spark plug touch some metal part of the engine for ground. The spark plug wire only carries the positive side of the current, you gotta have the threads of the spark plug grounded so there is a path for the current to follow. It's not gonna spark if there's no path to ground.
And don't touch the spark plug with your hands while doing this test or else your hand / arm / body will be the path to ground and you'll get a nasty shock :) Yes I have accidentally done this, dumb huh.

If you have an old plug (any type) laying around you could make a simple spark tester. http://www.mgexperience.net/article/spark-tester.html

i have tried just about everything, as far as replacing, except the ecu.The crankshaft pos. sensor is what sets the spark and the spark timing, isnt it?

so, did we ever determine if the other guy used the sohc wiring harnes instead of the dohc that would have been in the car?
as for the codes- you did the wire-jumper thing in the code reader port under the hood, and the cel still stayed solid? The SOHC engine was used one year- 95, and it was OBD1. the connection for the reader is under the hood by the brake fluid resevoir. '96 and on were OBD2 and you need a code reader, you cant just get the flash signals. if your kia has the OBD2 hookup, your car WILL NOT RUN because it has the DOHC wiring which is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from the SOHC set up. so, which do you have?
