5" lift kit for Gen I ,Gen II/strada/sport- 1st in the US
      #731794 - 05/25/05 10:18 PM

writen by Lester

" I am able to arrange for the 5" Sun kit for the Strada/ Storm to be shipped from Thailand to USA by sea freight. You will need to do your own clearance at the US port. Cost of the kit is at approximately USD$1080 with the exchange rate of USD$1 ~ Baht$39.85. Paypal surcharge of USD$46.38, unless you have a better payment method. Shipping to Long Beach Port, USA is aproximately USD$280 and it takes about 21 - 28 working days. It is suitable for Gen 1 Montero with rear leaf springs. You can use back your original shocks with the kit or use aftermarket ones of your choice. Bulk order are welcome. See if you guys can combine shipping and perhaps can save on it. The kit comes in one box of 70kg weight, 20 component parts and measures 15" x 31" x 9". Please note the torsion bars doesn't hang low. They are tucked smartly above the crossmember. Similar kits are available for Toyo, Isuzu, Ford, Jeep, etc. Please email lesteryeong@hotmail.com for enquiries. I will get back to you soonest. Please refer to the link below for pictures. "

Any idea if the Rodeo is built on the same frame as the Trooper? From my memory, I think there are many similarities. froont IFS and rear axle right? That's how the rodeo works. I can check with source if the kit works on a Trooper. It's exactly like the one you saw.

most gen 1's are pretty much the same. My front ifs looks just like the one in the pictures. I know that the tie-rods, front axle, and center links are the same betwen rodeo and trooper. on the first gens. The gen 2's are alittle different. I would say up to around 1995 are the same. aleast for the us models.

Just in case you did nt know what IFS stands for...
Independant FRONT Suspension

and IRS is Independant REAR suspension.

Will you have to extend your driveshaft, and trailing arms? how hard is it to fit this kit to a rear coil spring montero?

Hi DC,

Get a fowarding agent to help you. For about $90, they take care of all the paperwork and bond. You just pick up the box! PM me if you need a link to a list of approved forwarding agents...

I have a forwarder. It's costing about $90 or so. But all the other stuff I have to do. Ie.. "Customs power of attorney" doc, lading doc's and not to mention all the fees. I'm already $300-$400 in customs fees.

Well, at least i'll have a lift.

Ya, tell me about it. Right now it's being held by customs for and "X-Ray scan" . Who knew what trouble it takes to get parts over here. I guess we need a distributor here to make things alot cheaper and faster. The only thing is I'm not sure if it's dot legal? probaly not.

Make sure you get that out of Customs within 5 days. Otherwise, they will charge you a per day storage fee for holding the item when you finally get to pick it up.

That bites about the 3-400 in Customs fees. The HTS or "Harmonized Tariff System" is a joke. I don't know where they get the "harmony" part of it. I just imported over $5k worth of VOIP hardware for resale from Shanghai and I paid $0 in Customs fees. Go figure.

X-ray is normal in Customs inspections, as is physical inspection. Sometimes - even for a business - there is just the luck of the draw, but consider that a shipment from Indonesia (where many anti-American terrorists operate) is always of interest - particularly when it is not a routine shipment from a regular shipper. Even for a legitimate business that is a regular importer, Customs is required to inspect a certain number of shipments to the customer per year (or an inspection every so many shipments). I have shipments held up frequently for inspection for many reasons - sometimes it's USDA inspection for insects, sometimes Customs agents looking for veracity in documents, etc. Get used to it - particularly in this day and time.... and be glad they're doing it.

Ya I just had the same issue with 5.29's.
I can get them from Japan via a local gear importer who brings in shipments every 6-8 weeks. I ordered a set for a forum member who paid up front. Well this particular shipment for some reason got held in customs (in Oz) for almost 3 weeks for some inexplainable reason even though all his other shipments are cleared within 2-3 days. Thankfully I got the gears in my hands now ready to ship to the US much to my relief.
I had nightmares of a Mitsu enthusiast working in customs recognizing what they were and stashing them in his locker and changing the paperwork Wouldn't be the first time I bet..................

Ok.. everything is cleared. Total price for customs is 300. Now get this.. Its at a warehouse right now and when I go to pic it up they are charging me a $45 fork lift charge for moving it in the ware house to my truck! I ask if I can just open up the box and take the parts out my self but I was told that they still need to use the fork lift to get it in the warehouse to where I'll be at. Anything they can for charge for they will.

Well, the first day I can pick it up will be this Mon. Considering they start charging extra after tue for holding it longer.

Sooo total cost for the lift, shipping and customs is $1,600.

cool, keep us up to date and take some good pics..

BTW, in your first post you mention pics of the kit but I don't see a link?

Is there any info out there on this kit for rear coil trucks? or would I need to pay full price and just use the front end stuff, and have taller springs or spacers made?

At this point of time, there is nothing for the rear coil Monteros. The cheapest option is to use spacers, and whatever up front, you'll need the spacers. Here are some pics:

Lift kit link

Longer shocks and spacers are your best solution.

I faced the same problem when I was doing my clearance for King Springs few years back from Australia. I paid 50% of what I paid for the spings. Bummer

Funny..

The manual is about 20 pages. limited text on each. Just a side note kinda to the pics. I'm sure any translation would help. I'll hope to have it scaned by the weekend.

I haven't had much time to really look at it. It's heavy though. The steel used is really thick. The yellow paint looks like it way sprayed on.(thick) Wondering if I should powder coat them or just put it on the way it is.$$$

it endend up being exactly $306.96(customs+forwarder)fees. Then there was the stupid $45 "fork lift" fee at the wherehouse. The box was laying on the ground in fron of me but the wouldn't let me pick it unless I paid for the "fork lift" fee. So I paid the wherehouse and the fork lift moved it a whole 15ft to my truck where then I picked it up.

the lift was about
lift $1079.30
shipping $ 276.10
customs $ 306.96 ($75 of it was forwarder)
forklift $ 45.00

total- $1707.36

Ok.. looks like I'll be biting another bullet. I'll be ordering the 4.90's for it. I'm going to be talking to a local mitsu dealer guy that I met at the MOD. Should be able to get a discount. If not I'm going to use carlos's guy. Should take no longer then 1 week for it to get here. after that I will set up a time for the install of everything. So keep your panties on for now.

Man those pics rule way better then some of the english lift kits I've installed here at the shop. Pics alone tell the install from what i see very nice. Don't know if you have ever installed a kit before but sometimes holes don't always match up and pry bar may need to be used or mods to the kit.

Well you can always use the last page that has both english and the other language (BTW, what is that?) that will at least get the right part in you hand, and the pics them self show a lot of the work.. All in all, I say this is a damn good set of instructions and you don't need much more then the pics.

Ok.. a little update.

Well the front end is droped. The rear and front third members go to the gear shop for the front arb and R&P tommorrow. Sorry no pics yet. I'm was not able to stop by today and the shop guys where a alittle busy and forgot to take pics. But from what I understand is that there was alot of cussing and banging going on today. I guess they are seeing what years of trails will do to the undercarriage. " looks like somebody went underneath with a sledge hammer and hit every piece of metal there was" 4x4ing is new to them.. Their expertise is in Baja/ desert racing.
Getting off the old banged up parts and getting the new ones to fit sounded like fun. On the lighter side.. there are some yellow parts on the front end.
I'll try to get them to take pics tommorrow.

Also, they took a closer look at the gas tank and it has a really bad crease in it were it can bust open.. On that note, I just ordered a used one from M&S and should be here by next week. I guees that's why I was short 3 gallons from stock.. Will the money pit ever end??

*bartek. THe fron end will fit but you will have to get springs and extend the trailing arms for the rear. At least the most intricit parts fit.

Costly news but good in a way.
With the front drive system at the gear shop for the arb/gear install, they found some problems. I guess the bearing seals are bad and with all the water fording i'v done, it seized one of the bearings. So I have change the bearings and seals along with the install.. $$

Well at least I didn't find out on the trail. But just unexpected expenses.

As for the lift install, It's been going pretty good. They had to do a little modding on some parts. They start on the rear tomorrow and should get the front back from the gear shop.

I'll keep you guys updated..

sorry again no pics yet..

It should be an easy thing for you to do, just drop it down and swap the old stuff out of the old tank into the new one?

I have actually not done it on the monty though, but many other cars, it's not hard. Hope fully some other guys might have monty specific tips for you.

Oops, sorry DC, let me pull them back up

I'm kiddin, just building up the hype Whenever you have time is cool. Hope everything is going well. You're doing alot of mods at one time. It should drive alot different then what you were used to before. Hell, when I did a 2" body lift it felt different driving it.

The gas tank shouldnt be that hard to do, just make sure you dont have a full gas tank when you decide to change it You should be able to see everything that needs to come off and put back on the new one.

Good luck,

Ok.. yo can start to take your panties off now.

There are some differances with the ones on the web. Like this one uses 2 joints to transfer the torsion bar to the lower a arms. I believe the other one was older model. Also if you look at the 2nd pic with the middle a-arm, there was a bracket that came out. They couldnot figure out for the life of them what that was for. Also it got in the way of the steering asembley. So they cut it off. Now all they are waiting for now is the front 4wd assembly from the gear shop. And the rear thrid member.

As for the gas tank.. I anded up droping it off a the shop since they have it up on jacks already.

So I'm told there was alot of banging and hammering to get things to fit. Alot of the holes didn't match up. Ummm not because of the lift but a little bit on my side.
Once again trail scares. . So they had to drill out some of the holes for the bolts to fit. It now looks like fri-for the finish date.

Looks like the front bearing seals are coming back to bite me in the . Nobody has them here so they have been ordered from two separate locations from the eastern coast. Whats with the eastern coast? I had to order my 4.90's from there too. Is there a secret stash of Mitsu parts out there. We westerners are being left out. Anyways back to the seals. Everything is put together for the front diff. the 4.90 and ARB fit perfectly.(thanks Vic) They are just waiting for the seals. Then it goes up and the rear goes to the shop for the 4.90's. (they only have enough stands right now to hold the front up. I think they have 4 trucks/projects going togheter at the same time)

Sooooo the date of finish is being pushed to next week.

There are no aftermarket seals available locally? That's kind of a suprise to me. But on the other hand, the parts department at my shop couldn't find any shocks for mine unless they are Monroes

I'm not sure about after market seals but I think they are oem.

as for the shocks. You don't buy listed shocks for the truck thats modded. You measure the full length extension and compresion, now this will give you the shock length.
Now you just need to pick which compression rate and rebound. This is dependent on your vech weight and spring rate. Ie for the mitsu'd if they are cranked the compresion should about med. Etc.. shocks are not rocket science. Unless your setting up for the baja or jumping it's easy.

sorry about the shock stuff. I'm getting something for this lift. (cheap)But with this system of choosing. Well the baja racing guys at the shop are getting them.

Did the front diff actually get dropped down too? Those CVs look . Or is it because there is no weight on the front end?

I also like how everything is painted yellow.

Thats fully extended. There was a braket that came with for the front diff. THe thing is that it actually put the diff almost an 1" higher then the stock ones. wierd. Maybe the US cars are a little different. Right hand drive/ left hand drive. THere were alot of little things that needed to be fixed. Also the front diff uses 3 points to mont it. the kit uses 2. So a fabbed bracket had to be made to make the 3rd mount. More $$$.

Looks like its coming along nicely. I was actually looking at the same thing. The diff looks like it didnt drop down at all. Those CV's are gonna tear real fast if its driving at that level.

The yellow looks cool, but since nothing else on your rig is yellow, I would have sandblasted it and painted them black or something else cool, blue or red. But anyways, its on thats all that counts. Cant wait to see the final stance on it.

I like your mechanics hair cut ...The cv angles do look extreme...keep in mind that you will now be able to uncrank the T-bars now that you have the bracket lift in the front and that should lessen the angle a bit. Thats the thing about pioneering something new, its trial and error so time will tell. I'm sure the system willl get a good working over in the sierras.

OK.. alot of new info. Well after this last trip we figured out what the max angle the cv's will take. Well, the way these were are too much. during the trip they both pulled out at the upper cv's. It snapped out the retainer clips and the balls came out. The first time it was repairable. but the second time they exploded. Even after trail mod to try and limit the down travel.

Well when I got back home I got an email with some explanations.
For the front diff to clear the middle a arm it needs to move over to the right an inch or so. The way this is done is swaping the outer axles -left to right.

This pic is in manual but we coudnt figure out what it meant.

The swap. Left one on the Right ceneter cup and the Right one on the Left center cup
Also The rear axle needs to turned 2 splines clock wise. I havent done this yet but I don't know what this will do. I hope you guys can chime in on this.

And I solved the drop diff issue. When we tried the brackets that the lift came with on the stock location points it put the diff 2 inches higher then stock. Thats why we kept the stock ones on and debated on cutting out some custom mounts. Then when I had time after the trip to just sit there and look at the front assembly for a long time I mean a long time. I noticed in one of the manual pics there was a extra braket that mounted to the front drop bracket. There it was. the brackets mounted to the front drop cross bar. There to slots for it on both sides.

Here is the pic of it from the side. Sorry about all the pics. I just finished last night.

God! What a mess I bet there was alot of F@8! this and F^@# that going on. Now that explains the welded tow hook on the CV I'm glad you got things back together, it looks alot like its supposed to now. So overall, how impressed were you with the new lift, front locker and new gears!

Btw, where did you get those new boots. They look like they have alot of extra movement in them so it wouldnt tear as easily.

Good luck,
Angelo

As for the lift. It's great. I have all of the factory ride back. I have the same frame clearance as Lloyd on 35" and I'm on 33". Measured Lloyd 16 1/2 . Sport 16 3/4. Differance in tire pressure. Ground clearance was great. Didn't hit much at all. The only thing that hit really was the front drop down bracket. That was only because I had to un-crank the T-bars way down to limit the travel and lower it down for the cv angles. the A-arms actually had a upward arch to them . talk about uncraking the t-bars. It has more then enough clearance for 35"(next on the list).
the stock rear leaf springs are a little soft when you weigh them down so I might add a add-a-leaf. I'll let you know more long term.

As for the front locker and new gears, Wow. When I first got the rear locker it was like how did I wheel with out it before. But with the front locker. It's all over again. How did I wheel before this. It walks up things now where before it would just spin the rear and one of the front.
Even though I limited time with it due the cv's Even with one cv and 3 wheel drive it worked great.

As for the gears, I'm just a little below stock setup with the 4.32, 235/70/15. now with 4.90 33". Given I already had 4.62 in already the jump from 4.62 to 4.90's where extremly noticable. Highway was great, and trail was better. The AZ crew are looking into seeing if the Mitsu- HD truck's 5.29 will fit the sport's 3.5 rearend. If so then we would be able to run 5.29 front and rear.

The boots are the stock ones. I just cleaned the living crap out of them when I swaped the axels.

As for the welding the cv cup. the drivers side axles would not come out. We banged on it and took a screw driver to it and eventually welded a hook to it and tried to winch it out. No go= 3 wheel drive.I finally found out the the shop guys had the same problem. They used a prybar and a mallet. Needless to say it worked.

I'm glad you got everything figured out..too bad you were in a time crunch and didnt have time to figure it out before the trip. At least you were able to acid test it and come out with no Major damage. If any one else decides to go with this kit they have you to thank for pioneering it. Good to hear that the switch from 4.62 to 4.90 actually makes a difference. I was on the fence on weather a switch from 4.62 to 4.90 would make a worth while difference. I think I'll do those gears when I get to the front ARB. Anyways, good job and let me know if you want o hit the trails in Big Bear for any more testing..

From what I understand it will fit with some mods. If you measure out the front brackets of gen I's to gen II's. they should match. All you need to do for sure is measure them.

Very very Cool.

I have a few questions for you DC.

1. How did you get the 4.90 gears to fit?
2. Do you still have the old 4.64 gears?
3. Are they for sale?

the 4.90's are a direct fit. I bought them from the dealer..Ouch.. . We share the same front and rear of the 3.5 ltr GenII SR's. Thats how I got the front Arb rd110 in there too.I have parts numbers thanks to Vic lee. But they are major $$$ from the dealer.

And yes I still have the 4.64. Make me an offer and they can be yours . Just pm or email me.

Lester do you have any pics of this kit on a genI Montero? Rather then a sport/strada. I know you said they have nothing for the coil springs but I still want to see it for the genI to see how it compares to mine. Like you said I could figure something out for the rear.

This may sound strange. But it does not look to bad to me. To me it looks like the hardest parts would be getting the lower control arm bushings out and working on the cv joints. Now if it does not fit correctly and drilling holes and modifying would be needed such as on his it might not be to easy.

I am wanting to do something major next year. That lift would be nice. I thought I was going to have money for gears this year and a winch next year but soon as I got the money something came up and it had to be used on that.

Why not do a SAS? They make all those parts right here in the US, you'd have a much much more capable rig when you were done, and best of all.... no more cv joints.

I got a few low value 72 Chevelle and Raider parts to trade you if you want to do a SAS for me. How does your sas drive on the street?

I even still have some stock Raider rims with some nice 30x9.5 tires on them.

Driving is just fine. If you had to do an emergency manuver... better have that sway bar hooked up.

I can do 80 mph down the interstate, and steer with 1 finger. No problems with that at all.

So who here has a Gen I and and Monty Sport to compare side by side to see if this thing should work? It is very sad that after all this time there is still only one in the US.

The only problem is we're trying to help you out, and you apparently want to be totally spoonfed. It appears that you do not even want to read the thread about what you are interested in. We'll help you out in any way we possibly can, but we're not going to call them up, and order it for you.

Bottom line is we really would like to see another one(or more) of these in the US, but not so much that we are going to hold your hand for lack of a better term. Try a little harder, and you might get some more sincere comments instead of sarchasm(even though it was helpful sarchasm)

You can change that. Click on your My Home link above in the same line that says Welcome TXrazor

Once at your My Home page, scroll to the bottom and edit your Display Preferences

Once at the Display Preferences page, just after the Total parent posts to show per page... you can change the Total posts to show on one page when viewing a post in flat mode (default is 10)

Change that number to however you want to see on one page. Mine is set to 99 for example & I only see two pages for this thread.

Also, keep in mind when you asked for help on this you were essentially like that kid with a dictionary in their hand asking for the meaning of a word because they thought there were too many pages to try to find the answer themselves.

If you bear that in mind and look at some of the other posts, I think you'll find that all are more than willing to help and especially those who try to help themselves first.

Oh and fwiw, even I've been told to look it up when I asked a question that had been answered already.

No I don't need to be spoonfed, and I do have enough minutes left to make a phone call and order it with my cell phone. But Thanx.

As for pic's I thinks I took as many as I could at every angle. If there is a picticuler part you would lke to se that's not in this build thread let me know and I'll see what I can do.

As for working? Well it's been in storage for the past year. Been really busy with "life" so to say and had to put it on the back burner. But the Last time I took it out it worked like a charm. Gave me major clearace and lots of travel out of the front. Now I'm just waiting to get the txfr gears and 35" for it.

As for Any other questions just ask and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge.

G'day,

I hope your Sun 5" kit has survived.

I've been trying to track down the supplier of the kit on and off for the last two years and am very excited to have found your awesome thread.

I have sent Lester an email but have not had a reply for a week or so. Are you aware of the kit still being available or been in contact with him at all lately?

I'm really keen to fit it to my 2003 Triton dual-cab.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Does anybody know if the 5" kits are still made, has anybody bought one in the last few years since this post thread was started? I've been trying to get hold of a kit and sent to Australia but no luck as yet. Any help would be appreciated !

Kits are not available via Australia. They're not legal to sell there even to be shipped to the US. Must by from asia. Not sure if still available. Say hello to Yahoo/Google and let your fingers do the searching. Challenger/Triton are going to be part of your search terms.

Yeah been looking for about three weeks now, the closest I have found is a shop called ride off road in the Philippines which won't email me back. I'm just trying to find the actual manufacturer, or where somebody else has bought them from. Otherwise I'm gonna copy the kit and get it fabricated i think.

When I looked into this kit years ago, it was build in AUSTRALIA but was not legal to sell there due to your motor vehicle rules. They built them for the Thai army IIRC.

Read through this thread the info is there. The kit discussed in this thread is the "Sun" kit which is manufactured in Thailand (not AU). Contact the user "Lester" on the above posts. He's who assisted Dat on getting his delivered to the US. HTH No one in the US (that we know of) has bought and installed one since Dat did it. Your best bet if you cannot get ahold of lester is to search the Thai 4x4 boards. They still offer this kit there from what I could see from lurking around there not too long ago.

It's manufactured in Australia. I've personally spoken with the manufacturer directly before DAT bought his to help him purchase them. They export them to Thailand but do not sell them in Australia because of their DOT regulations don't allow them.

Why doesn't anyone post a link or contact info for this company?

Is it just cheaper to have Valley or Dever springs make a rear coil? How much of a lift can you go with the custom coil? 3" or 4"? Then just get custom HD torsion bars for same on front?

big sigh.........................

HD torsion bars wont give you any more lift than a stock crank
the reason no body makes a lift is:
*torsion bar mounts to the lower suspension arm
*welded rear torsion bar mounts
*very few people will buy them

every time someone asks this question i think, sure, you can run 40" tires now, but what about gears? I'd much much rather have deeper gears than some lift.
I have been thinking over a lift in my head. A 6" bracket lift that moves the front axle about 1.5-2" forward and a spring over rear. As long as I keep the stock geometry, it cant be any worse building an IFS lift than a SAS.
JMO
It would consttute a torsion bar drop(yeah i know) and droped steering box/idler/sway bar and the bracket drop would drop both upper and lowers with front and rear frame bracing

I also thought about custom stock geometry arms with either torsion bar mounts or a coil mount

blah blah blah you probably wont be able to get a lift, did i mention it cost $2000?

You can run 35's possible 37's with this kit. I doubt 40's unless you do some cutting.

There's always the 2.8x:1 or 3.15:1 xcase gears from Australia (marks 4wd)
Also, assuming the tranny/xcase combo is the same as the full sized Monty you may be able to get a Jeep xcase to fit.
As for R&P's 4.9's are already pretty decent. Most other trucks/4x4's don't go too far beyond that.
As for the cost, have you checked other IFS drop kit costs? About the same from what I've seen. Many are even higher. Problem right now is I'm not sure if the source for these still has them or if they've dried up. Lets face it this is an aging platform at this point and they may have stopped making them.

you can fit 35/37s without a 5" IFS lift....whats the point of wasting the money

most trucks can go beyond 4.88(4.90) gears, its just the aftermarket, and for most, the gears and install kits for both axles is about $1000, not on a mitsubishi....

The transfer case isn't a big deal to me because of the mark gears and jeep swaps, have you priced out a flipped d300 and np231 crawlbox lately? I'd say mark gives you a good deal

just saying you should consider your options, along with the prices, outcomes, goals, etc. SAS might be more money but look what you get in the end?
