..... and Charles is right, dont plan on usin that ARB again b/c it aint gonna fit. i would say that 4.56's are gonna be your best bet for gears if you still wanna keep it good on the road too...... make sure to get some good pics and keep us posted when you start......

I wouldn't use a toyota minitruck axle on a late model trooper, its just too narrow (55.5") even on 1st gens you have to use spacers to match the rear. an FJ60 axle is wider (60" IIRC)and would work better, but they are much harder to find and probably more expensive (depending). Waggies are about 60" IIRC, but I'd use a fullsize chevy axle and cut the long side down to use a waggy long side axle. That would put you around 63-64" which is a good match for your rear.
just $.02 of food for thought.

..Mark, what are advatages of coil springs vs. leaf springs, ie, 440444?...My goal for this rig is to make it a stout weekend trail rig while still using it primarily for DD for next 2-3 years.
John: IMO, the leaf spring setusp are easier to engineer and install, but I think the coil setups provide a better ride and can offer better articulation. Some of the local guys that have done coil SAS on 4runners and explorers have turned out with some very drivable rigs.

Thanks guys...this is really helping. Any ideas on best way to do internet searches for axles, FJ60,FJ80,Waggy D44, and others? I guess I first need to know what year and model vehicles these axles come off of. Mark, I kind of like your idea of coilover suspension, but I read somewhere it might cost a lot more than leaf. What do you think?

Car-Part.com is a decent site to start you off on your search. Also try searching around other off-roading websites in their for sale sections, as well as this one. Post in various "Wanted" sections, check your classifieds, junkyards, and maybe even Craigslist and eBay.

I'm not Mark, but leaf spring setups are usually cheaper than linked type suspensions. There are just fewer components that go into a leaf-sprung setup, and generally less work. But of course, there are always exceptions. It's all relative to coming across good deals, searching and researching your butt off, and/or how much of the stuff you can avoid buying.
Good luck with your search.

what about clearance on a Waggie 44 versus a yota axle if I'm running 33's? I think coilovers will be too much $$. Are coil springs front and rear an economical and practical option to leaf springs?

All other things the same (width, suspension, etc.) the axle you choose won't make much difference for clearance... 1.) Steering clearance can be adjusted by height of steering arm vs. drop in Pitman arm. 2.) Spring clearance of turned tires is more function of axle width and where you put the leaf springs (inboard/middle/outboard). 3.) Tire/body clearance depends mostly on how much lift you have and how much body cutting you're willing to do. 4.) Tire size and width combines with rim offset to affect 3.) and 4.) above.
Coilovers are pricey just for the shocks and springs, but you also need to factor in the cost of links and brackets. If cost is a concern, you're looking at leaf springs, in most cases, or perhaps a radius-arm setup as done on Early Broncos or similar to what Dan Houlton has under his red Amigo.
