Engine Builder's parts have made for a fine engine!
      #566233 - 07/30/04 07:59 PM

Breakin is complete and I'm happy to report I've got what appears to be one hell of a nice little engine. Good machining, good parts, FSM and this forum have made my effort a success!

*65 lbs oil pressure while on the gas and 15 lbs at idle.
*Temp at 1/3 on gauge (in HOT weather) with 180* drilled thermostat
*zero oil loss/leaks
*zero coolant loss/leaks
*motor is dry everywhere and looks new
*EB head with o/s stainless valves and 261C = good grunt
*Wee shakey on idle but fair trade-off for power

Initially, I broke with convention and broke motor in like an aircraft engine by 'getting into the gas' and building manifold pressure for 1st hours of it's life. I've retorqed everything (cold), adjusted valves (cold) TWICE over 500 miles and mothered all the little details of getting install 'just right'.

In a word: success! Thanks for fine service and support, EB.

>>>*I do thank you Sir, for the kind comments. I am a little curious about the "shaky idle" report.

Shouldn't do that. I will much appreciate some feedback if you solve this..I may want to have Tod change the bowl angles to flatten the bottom end a bit more on the StreetRV head version........*EB

I thought the valves were supposed to be adjusted/set warm?

I too am very pleased with my new 22r-eb motor, I put in last year and almost 30k miles ago.
EB engine kit with .40 over pistons, O/S valves and a RV cam
Local machine shop did a fine job machining and assembling of the block and head.
The bottom end was balanced with the clutch pressure plate and flywheel.
The motor breaths very nicly with a LC header and 2-1/4" all the way back.
The intake was upgraded to the late modle type and the AFM was tweeked a tiny bit, timing advanced to 12* with no pinging.
I too have that shacky idle at 800rpm but it's set to a much better 1000rpm. The nature of my beast.
Thanks EB

EB, I may be heading up your way to look at a motorcycle I'm interested in. If so, I'll call ahead before I drop in to say hello.

I too have a slight cammy idle....I like it....it's not like a 3/4 cam rump. Not at all like that, just a very slight rump.

Don't change nuthin EB.

Your RV head and 261C cam are a perfect match.

Me very happy!

>>>*Yea, that 261C surprised the heck out of me, I expected them to go out at 10% to 15% of total sales.
Already to 75% of total and gaining...Same power output but earlier, the 270/430 has longer legs.
*Finally it hit me, you guys & gals don't wind these up much, do you? The younger folks seem to love the 270/430, the regular drivers all love the 261C..
Interesting as he** to me!
Now: Shakey idle, report after report. My computer and math both says it doesn't do that.
Real world testing says it does..
My instinct is to work on that, but so far everybody goes..."Cool!"...????

So someone help me out here, I just laid out a 268° .410" lift that is 216° at .050" lobe lift on 109° center...I won't roll at idle, and will make about the same powerband.

*Spend the money? Or does the 261C do the job?...*EB

EB, before you go changing things....remember that these cams of yours are usually installed in worn engines by guys like me.

Who's to say if the stumble is the cam or the existing components?

And besides, it's not really a stumble, it's just a very slight cam lope....rhymic....like it should be. Not pronounced like a dragster, but just barely there....and only down around 700/750 RPM.

I agree with what you are thinking...That low RPM, hi-torque/RV cams are usually smoother at idle than stock, but there is no rule that says they have to be.

I LIKE IT!...It spins all four tires....It digs ruts...It slings mud....From a rolling start-no clutching, it grunts and digs. Stock cam and head would not do that.

I can already tell my gas milage ain't gonna suffer. I was getting 24.5 MPG stock. I've got almost 100 miles on this tank and it's still near the full mark, so it's looking good.
