Crank shaft Bolt
      #789480 - 10/02/05 09:12 PM

I'm in the process of trying to take off the Crankshaft bolt in my 87 4Runner. I did the shade tree mechenic techinque of wedging a Breaker Bar against the frame and then cranking the starter. Well it's not coming off. I have breaker bar on the top of the left rail(drivers persecptive). My batteriery is full and starter is strong. I'm mangling the crankshaft bolt pretty good. I know the FSM references a special tool. Is that my only option when the starter/Breaker bar against the frame technique doesn't work. Any help would be great I spent the most of today getting no where on my truck and any help would be great.

dumb question i suppose but you dont have access to a impact gun do you? make sure you use 6 point sockets for bolts like that.

I took 2 crank bolts out with that method and it snapped them loose with no problems. Maybe you can get some WD-40 up in the threads and just let it soak. If you take out the radiator you could prob get an impact on it.

I learned this when I first got my truck.
"If you have a manual transmission put it in 5th and then set the parking brake real tight. Put a long pipe over the handle of the wrench and that should give you plenty of torque to loosen it. That always worked great for me and isn't as tricky as the starter method."

I tried the Impact Wrench method and it didn't do anything for me. It's not the strongest impact but it's deffinently not the weakest. I'll put some soak on it tonight and see if that helps. Thanks for all the advice. Sounds like I'm gunna just grow some balls and put a pipe on the breaker bar.

Is the bolt head getting ground down (rounded) and causing the socket to slip when using the frame/starter method? Just asking as you mentioned it was getting chewed up.

I had to actually cut off the shoulder of the bolt (4 sides) to get one out not too long ago. The engine was out of the rig, chained to a stand that had 12' long 2x12's extending out from it to prevent overturn. Bolted on a spare bellhousing and starter and lit it up with breaker bar chained down. Nothing Honey! It actually had enough torque to lift up one side about 24". Next was the long cheater over the breaker bar with my 200#s of fatass bouncing on it. I bruised my behind but the bolt remained unbudged. Funny thing is, after I took the cut off wheel to the shoulder...I was able to unscrew the bolt with just my fingers.

>>>*Those can really be a pain, the crankshaft's normal torsional reversion causes the large washer flange to almost act like it is welded in place sometimes. A solid direct pull with a long bar almost never works, we have twisted breaker bars in two and split sockets.

I use my big 3/4" air hammer, run the compressor to wide open, once it reads around 200# or so I give it a hit with a good 6 point impact socket. *My crew usually hides under the steel work benches when I do this...*LOL**...

So far we failed with just one, that one is in China by now being turned into flapjack flippers....*EB

I finally got the bolt off. I tried the breaker bar on the frame trick. Then putting the truck in fifth and putting a breaker bar w/ a 3 foot pipe. I tried flamming the sucker with a tourch, and putting penitrating oil on it. I opened the compressor wide open and hit with my impact gun. Nothing, so I took my cut off wheel to it, I diced up the flang real good and then tried the impact gun again it came off real nice.

When I said the bolt is getting rounded, I didn't mean I was stripping it. Rather the bolt head was twisting while the flang wasn't moving.

So I got the thing off and it's deffinetly not re-usable. The part number wasn't in the parts thread. Anyone know the part number and where I can get the part. I checked a couple of the websites and couldn't find it. I would rather not give my buisness to the stealership. Thanks.
