Cold air intake for a 4D55?

Anyone put a cold air intake on their 4D55/56? Any thoughts or ideas on a cold air intake? My 4D55 has a Starion turbo on it.

I just have an open K&N for now until I install a snorkel.

What did the Starion turbo do for your truck?

I guess the snorkel is a cold air intake and about the same $ as a K&N cold air intake, although I cannot find a K&N specific for the 4D55, not clear on the specs required.

The Starion turbo was on it when I bought it, but I believe it just pushes more air.

I'd steer clear of any modifications to the stock air system until I studied it in detail, and figured out the ramifications of things. The factory setup is built to keep water out of the motor, so that is also a consideration.

Re: Cold air intake for a 4D55?

Thanks for responding. This is why I'm posting the question. Cold air intakes claim to increase HP and benifit the engine. The cold air intakes I've seen look like a tube with a cone filter at the end; I don't get it. Granted, I'm no expert, not even close, but the snorkle systems look like a tight system, cold air from the outside and no water, but the kits look to be missing some important under hood parts. Your point is well taken, I 'm concerned with to little/to much air, or dirty air. Are there any of those Aussies on here?

Another option might be an intercooler. A lot of the overseas 4D55's/4D56's had them. This will let you stick with a factory designed system.

I know where there is a factory intercooled RHD pajero close to you, and I also happen to have a factory intercooler sitting on a shelf. The cold air intakes are noisy, and the factory air box that comes with the D50 rigs is comparable to the JDM air box. If you choose to, you can meet me in ellensburg this saturday to have a look at this stuff....I have to run over there to adopt a new dog...will be driving the RHD Paj then.

Ive got the entire setup for a factory IC setup except the front bracket that holds the IC support to the radiator support, and the Hood.

Thanks to Marty I now have the IC, now I just need to figure out how to fab it in.

Re: Cold air intake for a 4D55?

Excellent! Let us know how it goes for you. What's your plan for getting the air to the IC? The genI turbos (as I'm sure you know) had a duct, but the early genII 4D56's used a double hood, with a duct at the leading edge of the hood, at the top of the grille. That might be an idea for you to fab, if you didn't wanna cut your hood? Although a hood duct IS pretty cool...

As far as a CAI, I wouldn't put one in place of the factory air system. The snorkel does a good job of grabbing cold air, but you're right about it missing connections underhood. I had to fab a piece to go from the inner fender to the airbox, and it was supposed to be made for my genII 4M40 diesel. A long time ago, Mitch Rollings gave me license to publish a snork install article for him on his genI. I'll see if I can dig it up to show you how he bridged the gap on a 3.0L V6... he used flexthane exhaust hose.
