Sudden death of ECU last night. Driving along fine, no warning, Check Engine lite comes on, immediate cutoff of engine (no sputtering.) Engine cranks fine, fuel pump fine, spark good, etc etc. Pull ECU - the IC's labelled IC107-IC110 (little vertically-mounted things in a group of four smell burned. IC108 is blistered. OK, Probably the whole board is shot, but I would certainly be willing to replace those four ICs later and test this one. Meanwhile, I need a new ECU - or a rebuild. Any recommendations? This vehicle is a manual transmission 4dr with A/C, originally sold in Colorado (so I don't know if there are any Cal emissions features.) Help help help! Thanks. |

Wow... a board veteran posting to the wrong forum! lol...well when desperation sinks in I suppose we don't pay attention to those things! j/k.. Anyway I've got my 89 LWB 3.0L Auto with a good ECU....anyone know for sure if they are interchangeable. BTW...yeah I PM'ed you too. MI/Mitsu |

EastCoaster, I've got a working ECU from a 90 LWB auto. I don't know if they are interchangable though... the auto with manual and 90 with 91. I've sent you a PM. Michigan Mitsu, If EastCoaster wants my ECU, I'd gladly give you the same for your's as he's giving me for mine. I've sent you a PM. dT |

Are you actually suggesting a 3-way? lol ![]() ummm.. thanks but actually I'm only interested selling/offloading the extra part, or I'll keep it until the day my main Montero's ECU dies as they are identical vehicles. An interesting notion though....the 3-way.

Quote: I guess I am... in a way... ...since I was offering to sell my spare 1990 ECU to EastCoaster (which is definately different than the 1989 ECU), I'd BUY your 1989 ECU from you for the same 'cash' that I'd sell my 1990 ECU to EastCoaster for... So, you would be offloading your ECU... and getting paid for it... dT

oic... well fhuzz, as soon as you hear back from EastCoaster let me know what you work out. Any deal should beat those vultures on ebay asking $395 and $495! |

Thanks, guys - I may be in the market, but there have been a few developments since I last checked in here. Here's what I know so far: The p/n is MD146946. This apparently is the only ECU that made it into the 3.0 Gen 1 - there is another model that is sort-of compatible electronically but does not have the same connectors, which I believe begins MD175xxx. There are known issues with the Rubycon electrolytic capacitors leaking corrosive gunk onto the board. The 3.0 engine has proven more durable and more popular than Mitsu (intended? thought?) and so there is a shortage of rebuildable cores for this part. My local dealer can order a new one from Mitsu for $1300. I haven't tried eBay but there seems to be one in a boneyard around here for a little less than that. AVPro ECM in Ft Myers Beach FL can rebuild them for $160 unless they are totally fried. At present he does not have any cores in stock and hasn't seen any for a few months, but Nick (the guy I spoke with) seemed extremely knowledgeable. He immediately identified the burned out part (a Darlington transistor array, one of four labelled IC107-IC110), and correctly told me that it was probably one of the middle ones. He also said the likely cause of the failure was - get this - improper winding insulation on the stepper motor which controls low-speed idle. Sure enough, I had to replace that part (with a new Mitsu part, cost about $200) last summer! He said that the insulation on the magnet core wire is too low-temp and eventually fails, shorting everything out, all the way back to the ECU, and he STRONGLY recommends disconnecting the idle controller and just using the screw. He also said (this may be self-serving, but I kinda tend to believe him on the principle that whatever can screw up, will) that putting a boneyard piece into your truck might well cause it to blow, either because of the above issue (duh) or because the electrolytics could haved leaked causing damage to the board that was not there the last time the donor truck ran. For his price (see below) it seems prudent to get the thing rebuilt and checked. Indeed, when I looked carefully at my board, I could see some corrosion around the base of C107, the larger of the two big electrolytic caps. His price for the rebuild includes repairing any damage to the multilayer board (mine was singed a little, not too bad) changing the leaky Rubycon caps, and replacing any other bad components. They give a lifetime warranty and, as he said, 'I never want to see your board again.' I was impressed and sent him mine overnight - I should have it back here Thursday and will report fully. Anybody else out there have experience with them? As I said, I've done a bit of circuit design and this guy seemed on the up-and-up, and quite knowledgeable. |

Quote: Wrong, my Raider had a 3.0 with a different number ECU. The number ended in 6477. |

Quote: Nope - the '89 3.0L ECU part # is MD126339 for one variant (not sure if it's CA, M/T model or a Dodge Ram truck variant) and MD136477 for the 3.0L A/T Raider model. My truck has the MD136477 ECU and I keep a good spare in the truck at all times.
That's very interesting advice on disconnecting the IAC and using the adjuster screw, though - if anyone can prove that to be useful, I'd be the first to convert. Thanks for the "food for thought"..... just might work. Frank |

It will work. I unpluged mine before to try. I dont think it was working correctly on my gen1 anyway, well, with the old smaller throttle body. |

90-91 Monty's have the same ECU as per Hollander Interchange puter here at the salvage yard. Doesn't mention ID's or manual/automatic. Ed |

Well, as of right now (1PM EST) Nick at AVPro has given me the bad news that my board (eg, the CPU) won't clock. Doorstop material. I am off to try to acquire one locally, but how much do you want for yours? |

Hey EastCoaster, No Problem. I'm not interested in making any money on this, and thus the 3-way situation MichiganMitsu eluded to. I'm only intersted in selling the 90 ECU I have for what MM wants for his 89 ECU so I can have the spare for my 89 V6... so... let the PM's begin... dT |

Does anybody know if the 136477 and 146946 are plug compatible units? I am not talking about differences in firmware - more like, do the connectors match physically and electronically? |

|

I am almost sure the connectors are the same. I know on my 6477, the distributor has a different plug than my 91 with the 6946. I dont know if that will work, I have never tried. |

grass13 tried to run his Gen1 with a distributor that didn't match the ECU... didn't work until he swapped distributors. The distributor change may be the only thing needed to run one or the other ECU. HP and torque ratings are identical, so I don't know if there would be any advantage in a swap other than the convenience of what can be found as a replacement. Frank |

I also did a nationwide search for a 91 Engine Computer on car-part.com and came up with nearly 30 units, some rebuilt. Worth a look IMHO.

Yep - they are still out there, although having seen (in person) at least one of them, the one in Brockton for $225, I wonder how many of them are burned out.. |

Can always ask the yard to confirm if they're good and send you a pic (yeah right... ).Well, it's a start anyways. |

Ok, I am back on the road - and I have an odd set of pictures about the 146946 ECU. My original 'dead' ECU and the spare I acquired in a PM-laced festival of cross-border shipping courtesy of fhuzz both show evidence, on the inside of the cover, of electrical arcing, in the same place. The new one works fine and there is no evidence of damage to the board in the area of the arc scar. Photos showing this are here: http://gallery.quacken.com/v/album125a/lmh2006/2006-12-09/ Has anybody else seen this? |
