What brand of oil is everyone using in their GEN1?
|
|
Hello all,
I was just curious as to what brand of motor oil, and filter everyone was using in their GEN1? Also, feel free to add other fluids like power steering, differential oils, transmission fluid exc.
I have the 2.6L and I am looking for a brand to use exclusively. I never really thought to much about oil until joining bobistheoilguy.com. But not to many people have Montero/Raiders on there.
Happy trails to all

My rig has the 3.0 V6 and I like Delo 15w40. Have used it with great success for over 4 years with my 95 LC that now has 215XXX.

Reading BITOG will drive you crazy. It's the place experts go to confuse ordinary mortals. Stick with what your owner's manual says and for fun you can get the odd UOA to compare oils.

I use whatever's cheapest in WalMart, Auto Zone, or Advance Auto, usually in 10w40 regular dino oil. Same thing for brake fluid, power steering fluid, and full-strength coolant (I'll dilute it myself and save money). My Gen 1 has 170K on it, so I'm not going overboard with premium fluids for it. However, I do tend to stay away from Fram oil filters, and will use Purolator, MotorCraft, or whatever else they have.

Full synth 10W30 for the turbo truck (usually Mobile 1) and house brand 10W30 for the 3.0.
Mitsubishi oil filters.

For both my gen 1 & 2 I use regular Chevron 5w30 dino oil that's sold at costco and change it every 5k or so.
For any turbo'd motor like some of the turbo 4 cylinder Monteros & Raiders being built, I'd only recommend a quality synthetic.

Oil threads seem to be common again all of a sudden. Hmmm...
My (genII) Pajero gets Rotella. Sometimes dino, sometimes synth. Depends on my mood when I'm buying the $35 oil filter and 8 liters of oil. It's turbo charged, but diesels beat the crap out of every oil.
Evo gets a decent quality full synth every time: Mobil, Penzoil, whichever's on sale. I want that turbo to keep on making me giggle...
My gen I's used to get Quaker state. Then I pulled down my 3.0V6 for a rering and heads and had a looksie. Never again went back to the Q.

I'm a Castrol dino oil user, even in the turbo.
My experience with Quaker State was summed up by a Honda CVCC that quit running. We removed the valve cover to find the bound valve train. Cleaned up the engine internals, refilled with Castrol, fired right up.

Better off using Castrol!!!... Oh wait that's a paraffin based oil too.
OK... I will go with Delo 400... Hmm same thing.
Seems to be a pattern here.

Delo seems really heavy? Are you running the 15w40, or the 5w40 synthetic. I am surprised no Valvoline yet. I was reading a while back, that someone said Valvoline runs the best in these engines. I have no clue though. I am just compiling a thread to see what people are using, and how their experience is..
Russell, I have never once used a Castrol product, so it is good to hear, that it has worked well for you. I do not know much about their stuff.

There was a time when additives similar to waxes were used in oil and, at that time, Quaker State was one of the worst in their lower grade engine oils. But, all manufacturers were doing much the same thing. That was long ago.
I grew up knowing people who would only use Quaker State and Castrol was the big "evil" in their eyes. "It's full of wax and will gum up your engine," they'd tell me.
Where one grew up and learned about engines seems to be the determining factor as to what oil was to be religiously avoided.
The only sludge I've ever seen firsthand in an engine was the direct result of neglect and nothing more.

I use the 15w40, it gets super hot/humid in the midwest. May change to something thinner come winter tho.

Yeah, even in Hawaii where it is 90 most of the time, I would have a hard time running 15w40. Simply because, I have to get up and leave, and the oil wouldn't have enough time to come to temp. I have been hearing excellent things about Valvoline Synpower. That may be in the works..
