93 montero SR front and rear axle swap into 1gen swb raider
|
|
i was at the local pick and pull and found a 1993 montero sr so i pulled the rear axle including the Ebrake and disk brakes along with the air pump to lock the rear diff. the gear ratio is different from my raider. should i pull the front axle or just the 3rd member? Is the 2nd gen montero front axle stronger? also since the rear axle has disk brakes should i pull the brake master cyclinder and proportioning valve?

I put a 96 sr rear with disk brakes on my 88 SWB and did not replace MC. Brakes work perfectly!

Get the front upper control arms, spindles, brake calipers, cv axle, idler arm, and the front diff. That will be a good upgrade for your 88.

that 93 is gonna have the same diff as your 4cyl unless its a manual so your not gonna get a upgrade there and its also a vacuum actuated diff which is kinda a down grade compared to your 88 diff. if you want a good upgrade look at the diffs out of manual tranny 89-91 v6 models or 02-04 AWD montero sports but beware the sport diffs have a lower ratio in them so you'll need to swap out the rear r&p to match.

No they wont. The Gen 2 front diff is of high pinion design so the ring and pinion wont swap over. 4.625 is more than close enough. Run it as is you wont have any problems thats what I run in both my gen 1's without issue.

That rear end swap is going to make you very happy, especially if you have big tires. 35's was scary with the stock drum brakes. Make sure you have the driveshaft, mine had a larger joint on the axle, made me get a driveshaft. Definitely worth it though.

yes i have 35's that I cant wait to put on. So I need to get the complete drive shaft from the SR? is it the same length just with bigger joints front and back? Can i just remove the joints and install them on my raider drive shaft?

If your SR donor vehicle was a 95 1/2 or later you need the yoke off the flange side of the SR drive shaft and mate that to your 89 drive shaft..If you got the earlier rear end with the big pinion flange you need to get a custom drive shaft made..or swap pinion flanges on the diff...There's a thread here that covers this swap in a whole bunch of detail..

the donor is a 93 SR. is this the 9" or 9.5" rear axle? is the thread in the archives for the pinion flange swap.

The thread in the archives covers all of it...start to finnish the photos have since dissapeared but the info is there.
A 93 model has a 9" rear end, but you stated in another post that the rear end came out of a rig with the 3.5 liter engine which leads me to believe it was a 94 since the montero didnt come with the 3.5 untill 94. Please clarify.

the donor has the 3.5 engine. i also looked at the data tag on the door and was made in 93. i am not sure on the month that it was built but i can go check.

If it's a 3.5 DOHC, then it isn't a 93 SR. It must be a 93 build of a MY 94. Not as many of them rolling around it seems, as the 95-96. Not sure if they had the "standard option" of the locker like 95-96. Earlier 3.0 SRs didn't always have it.

Re: 93 montero SR front and rear axle swap into 1gen swb raider

I just measured the axle and its a 9.5" with that being said the donor SR has to be a 94 but build in later 93. I tried to fit my driveshaft to the SR axle flange and it does not fit. from what i just looked up i need to find a 95-96 SR or 95 on up montero sport driveshaft rear yoke to install on my raider driveshaft.

Re: 93 montero SR front and rear axle swap into 1gen swb raider

if you want to use that 94 axle go back and get the flange off the 94 driveshaft. They use the same u joint, I believe, so just swap at the u joint. My raider was built in '88, so that make it an 89. As otheres said above, All the 92-93 SR lockers I've seen were 9",,,and the front was 7 1/2 "high pinion" air controlled, and they were all 4.88. I think someone had a low pinion 4.88 8" front gear for sale on here recently. I think there was a problem with locker actuators, but I'm not sure which year was better or on parts available,,,something else to think about and those in the know will fill in...

Re: 93 montero SR front and rear axle swap into 1gen swb raider

Two options here.
-Get the 94 drive shaft, and your SWB shaft and take it to a drive line shop and have them make you a hybrid shaft. Tube will need to be cut and 94 end welded on and balanced. This will run you a anywhere from $300 plus.
2) Get the flange and drive shaft out of a late build 95 or 96 which comes with the right size. The U-joints are the same size as Gen 1 V6 this lets you make your own hybrid shaft without cutting the metal tube.
