Havent seen much about this topic in awhile. Wondering who's gotten the most recent set of t case gears and how did you go about getting it. I know a while back there were quite a few members that got them when they first came out. After that, it was a little difficult to even get in touch with the guys over seas. Now I'm thinking of finally getting a set but I want to get them now just in case the guy (mark is his name?) been awhile, a little foggy) runs out & stops producing them. Are there other members interested in a group buy as we did for the snorkels? Any info or contact info would be great too. Thanks in advance! |

I'd be interested in getting more info, price, etc.. I'm in no hurry to build up the Montero with mods, but it's inevitable with the parts stacking up in my garage for it. I'm looking for 4.90s first then t-case gears could be on my hit list unless I settle with 4.62s

What would be great is to see if someone had a set that we could get a place here in the US to make them. |

Here is the link that I used. Crawler Gears sometimes you have to support the people who do make the upgrades for our monteros or you might not even have that if they don't sell. my brother and I both got them from this website a while back. Mine in 2007, Mark in 2009. oh and by the way, these t-case gears are almost required for off roading if you don't want to overheat your transmission, especially if running 33s or larger and carry a lot of weight. I have 35s and the truck weighed in at 7600 lbs and not once did my AT light come on during the summer heat in Moab. 4.90 R&P are easy to find and don't have to be custom made.......t-case gears are custom made and could eventually not be available in the future. the 4.90s are in the gen III monteros as well as some of the montero sport models.......junk yards have them all over the place. |

We bought the most recent set, the gears are no longer available directly from Marks 4WD. They have to be bought from Advanced Adapters i think the cost is now around $2000-2500. At that point you're getting into Atlas range anyways

I suggest a less expensive alternative that would be even better than the 3.15's, Box4Rocks + flipped Dana 300. You'll get a better crawl ratio and you'll have a great cruising ratio and a standard 4 hi. |

I like hearing about these different options especially the affordable ones. It still would be nice if there was a straight swap case instead of building up a doubler to get what we need especially since almost all of drive our trucks to where we go offroad, so it is very important for it to be dual purpose. |

I've been looking at brownie boxes, aux trannies, to go between the 4L60E and the NVG242 I am planning for the Astrovan. I have 3.73 posi gears, and the mileage is about 14. I got 19 in an astrovan with the same motor, 2wd, same tranny, and 3.08 gears... I want a .8 o/d, about a 1.25 u/d, and the 1:1 middle gear. Little worried about shifting on the fly with no clutch, but can probably do the bounce the throttle trick to slacken the driveline and quick shift it. Looking at something like a Spicer 4813 (#???), small spicer brownie in any case. There are better crawl type ratios available. |

guys, Hardman Bros in Melbourne are the people that made the gears: http://www.hardmanbros.com.au/ Talk to Mark or Leigh. From what I have heard they do not have any spare stock but would consider a group buy. There are 3 sets of gears that they have done: 2.85 for earlier Pajeros/monteros 3.15 for Gen 2 3.15 for Gen 3 I have a set in both my Gen 2.5 & Gen3 It is possible that the Gen 3 gears would also fit the Gen 4 vehicles , as Mitsu part numbers have revealed similarities, however big doubt exists for the NT Diesel (Aus). There does not appear to be anyone that has installed these gears in a Gen 4 though. BTW it was mentioned on the Aus forum that Hardman Bros bought out Marks 4wd Adaptors in Melbourne. Good luck. |

F#*! That's not the kind of news I was looking forward to! I knew this day was going to come and I waited too long. I'd rather look for the most direct way to lower the gears in the t-case. All other options I think would take some fabbing, as far as I know. I'm not around any Mitsubishi clubs or guys to lend a hand or learn the ropes on mods for the t case so gonna try to see what I can do with the 3.15's from AUS. So since the gears have been made before, they can be made again, right? At first there was a lot of planning & work to get the first one developed. After that, it was down hill from there. I don't keep up enough on the outer limits board. Can anyone get me the info I need to contact someone & see what it would take? I'm def not paying $2500 for a set ![]() If a group buy is the only solution, what quantity of gears would it take? Who would be interested within the next 3 months? On a good note for the developer, whoever has the power to make them again should consider that they would be able to sell a large amount of them now and in the near future. I see often that members are retiring their Gen I's and going with Gen II's and 2.5's so I doubt he'd have trouble selling them. Anyone care to tell me how much they usually go for? Ps, is it possible to have a set that hasn't been installed copied here in the US? |

Call advanced adapters and ask what they are charging for a set. Swapping in a different T-case like a Rubicon T-case could be done at your local jeep shop i'm sure it's not a huge deal. |
If we're talking group buy I'm in for a set. (depending on price) I could even go for a set of 2.85s also. |

Haha whew! That's a relief. Sounds much more reasonable. I've emailed mark & hardman Bros, no response yet. I'm up for options. Toasty, what do you know about the rubicon t cases? , you would probably need a set of those gears to copy? How come we haven't explored cutting gears here in the US? Ian, you were one of the first to get a set? Didn't Mark test fit the first set in yours? Obviously you know more on what's going on over there more than any of us. Maybe a group buy is around the corner. You have any more advice or info that I don't have access to? |

I'd be in for a group buy as well if we go that route. |

Gears cost $1,395.00 AU (1453.45 US), i think my gears cost around 200 to ship. Marks4wd refers it's US customers to Advanced Adapters these days. Now i could be wrong but i remember Advanced adapters price being in the 2k range. Now i'm sure if Ian is willing to help with a group buy that would make a big difference on the price. These gears are awesome and worth every penny, installation is pretty straight forward. Once you have them you wouldn't ever go without. As for the Rubicon T-case, they fit pretty nice in a Montero. You will need the Jeep Cherokee AW4 tailhousing, modified pulse gear, speedo decoder, cable shifter and custom driveshafts but on the plus side no more slip yokes. |

Angelo, Yes I think I was the first to actually have a set of the 3.15 fitted. These gears were made to fit a 2nd hand transfer case that Mitsabissan (Frank Zanetti) sourced in Melbourne, Aus. If I recall correctly a couple of us over here chipped in for the cost of the transfer case. At that time Frank didnt have a 3.5l Paj so he was doing us a huge favour by organising the manufacture of these gears. To date there is no-one else who has made or is willing to make these gears. The gears were shipped to me & I had them installed by a 4wd shop in Canberra. Apart from a minor install problem relating to a shim (apparantly Mitsu used different thickness shims from time to time) the gears have performed faultlessly. There are some guys over here trying to get a group buy together for a set to fit the Tritons here (the Triton is a 4wd utility vehicle with Gen 2.5 running gear) & thats where I heard that they had contacted Hardmans & were told that no stock was available & he would only fabricate with a minumun order. I did send Mark Hardmann an email but no reply yet, however they might still be on Xmas vacation. I will call them tomorrow & get back to you. Just out of interest there is a mob here in Australia who are acting as agents for Marlin Crawlers in the US (I'm sure you have heard of marlin) & they posted that they were willing to try to get marlin to make up a crawler to suit the Tritons. All Marlin would require were some sample parts here is an extract from the post "Why am I telling you Triton boys this? It's not to rub it in....seriously.....well, maybe just a little.... but to be frank with you all there is no reason i dont think why this part cannot be made to fit a Triton. all you (im reffering to you triton owners here that want to crawl) have to do/organise is to get the following parts together to send to Marlin in the USA to make a unit for the triton - a rear transmission adaptor/bellhousing and transmission out put shaft, the front transfercase adaptor and transfercase input shaft. with these parts in hand Marlin can then fabricate front and rear adaptors for the crawl box aswell as include the correct couplers for the shafts. Matty from Monster rides is going to be the australian agent for these so if you triton boys think that this would be worth putting your collective mitsubishi asses together and resources and getting the parts needed over to matty to forward onto Marlin, then you triton could be crawling too. so how bout it boys? who here is "seriously" interested in being able to get their mitsubishi crawling? Oh, i should mention also that my final crawl ratio is around 125:1 as a reference. and with this unit fitted you have the choice of the following gear sets - 1) your factory transfercase by itself 2) the crawl boxes (4.7) by itself 3) compound low with both boxes in low range. much more usable than just one set of low range gears. let me know what you guys think bout this? actually, let matty know, send him an email at matty@monsterrides.com.au and tell him your interested in developing a crawl box for the triton.....post your interest here to so we can see a running tally. cheers guys, hope thats some hope for you all." The cost would be more that the 3.15 but would give you much more options with more ratios. I must admit that sometimes the 3.15 are too low & sometimes not low enough, so it would be great to have the standard ratio, plus to option to go lower again, but I guess it depends upon how much $$ you want to throw at our vehicles! cheers & I'll get back once I contact Hardmans. |

Called Marlin, They said that they are not interested in making anything for Mitsubishi's at this time. I emailed Matty and hopefully we'll be able to work together on this and get a world wide group buy for some Marlins. Money talks and i'm sure if Marlin sees a market they will get on board. If i hear something good back from Matty i might start a new post in all the forums i frequent. ![]() Hold on to your cash Angelo

Dang! I guess I'll hold my horses for a tad & wait to see what happens. What does it mean if marlin wants to produce? I'm looking for simplicity. But if marlin can produce something better, why not? I didn't catch everything & understand it all, but sounds like a better option? |
its basically a unit that gives you dual options for the trasnfer case (duel case). You can have your standard low range, ie 1.90 & then you can select the marlin range of 4.70 (or whatever is in there). It means having 2 selectors & a bit of mucking around with linkages etc to get it all working. Gives you heps more options that just than a straight 3.15 gear, but its getting marlin to be interested is the problem & also if there is much interest. I also emailed Matt but nothing back yet. Could of even gone out of business with the GFC who knows (his website is down as well) |

Guys, I spoke to Lee Hardmann today. He says that they have NIL stock of any of the gears, however they ARE taking orders & are in fact in the process of making up a new stock supply of all 3 sets of gears. Orders will be taken thru http://www.marks4wd.com/ Who BTW have relocated to the same factory as Hardmann Bros in Melbourne, reason: Mark hardmann has bought out marks4wd. Lee couldnt advise on this stage if they are going to supply US customers or refer them to their agent , namely Advance Adaptors. So guys anyone out there wanting a set of gears I suggest you drop an email to marks4wd in melbourne & place an order. info@marks4wd.com thats all I can inform you of at the moment. In regards to the Marlin option, it would be nice but a whole lot more work & at this stage (unless Matt from Monster Rides gets back to us) pie in the sky. cheers |

thats good news and bad news. Bad cause we dont know if Marlin will do this, atleast without a whole lot of work on our end. And good cause they are still making 3.15 gears. Was price discussed? I guess I can find that out but not sure if you mentioned group buy prices compared to individual prices. I emailed both places last week but havent hear back from either email. You seem to have a connection with them. Would you be so kind to get a few answers for me? Thanks for info you've supplied so far

He said that pricing was under review, mine cost $1200 but that was 6 years ago. I think I paid about $1350 for the Gen3 set in 2010, They should be able to give you a price if you make an enquiry |
Guess next thing to do is find out exactly what Marlin wants & find out time frame OR I can contact Hardman again & set up an official group buy post for the 3.15 gears |
Quote: I dont think the Marlin thing will get off the ground, its a fantastic idea but as mentioned above he's not interested. I've emailed him twice. I'll wait til next week to hear back before I start another post on the group buy with whatever price he'd offer. You know them better since you've given them business in the past, maybe you can round up a better price for us? |

Got news from Matty, Marlin will only do a minimum of 250 crawler boxes. They said the Mitsu market is too small. Damn. I've got something else up my sleeve. don't worry guys. |

250, huh? Well, I only have one. So, you're saying there's a chance... (Dumb and Dumber, paraphrased) John B. |

Hahahaha I remember that part hahaha On a side note, still haven't heard back from Mark. Ian has better luck than I have had so far. They must like you Ian lol. As soon as I get info, prices, shipping cost & time frame, ill post it so we can start this group buy. Toasty, what else did you have in mind? I'm afraid that even tho your option may be better, it will probably involve more customization & cost? |
I haven't got a minimum order on this yet but they are willing and do have my dimensions with pictures of what i want made. I would probably need some help getting these guys some parts but i talked to Sumner machine in Kansas about making us up an adapter plate to bolt up any 6bolt round T-case directly to the Gen 2 AW3. So you'd just need to figure out your speedo, shifter and driveshafts. The cost would probably be about $400 each so it wouldn't be any cheaper than Aussie gears in the end but you could do more with it (doublers, eliminate slipyokes, 4:1, more center clearnace). You could potentially build your own setup on the cheap. To give you an idea what i'm talking about here is one they make for a GM turbo 400 to GM 203
Not a bad idea. But how much work on our end would it need? Or what parts would we need for it to work? A doubler would he nice, how difficult would it be to get everything to work like you mentioned? On a side note: I still haven't received Ana email from Mark. Ian, you talked to them already? |
The biggest issue which is not that big is to get a crossmember set up for the doubler, but once you have a layout of one it can be duplicated. |
Quote: Never had a special crossmember on mine. I've heard that it's recommended but not really necessary. I see if I can dig up the thread on Pirate where this is discussed. Edit: here it is clik |
The crossmember thing is negligible on a montero i think, The 3.5L SR T-case weighs more than 2 standard T-cases and it's larger than 2 lengthwise. So really the only additional stress comes from the extra gearing but you'd have to be kinda asking for trouble pushing 8000RPM's with 10.something to 1 T-case ratio. |
How did you set yours up using the factory crossmember? I guess I should of said it this way. The challenging part would be modifing or building a crossmember and the mounts for the tcases. ![]() Thanks for the link |
The trans attaches to the cross-member just like it's supposed to, although the ends have been modified to bolt to the inside of the frame instead of under to clear the radius arms. Nothing structurally connects the cases to the frame directly. I don't remember exactly what I did to get the jeep tail housing to bolt to the mitsu trans mount, but I think it was minor. ![]()

Guys, is there any reason that a mitsu transfer case could not be used as a doubler?? With my 3.15 as well as another 1.90 would be some good options. or is the Mitsu case too big & long making it impractical?? Wouldnt using a Mitsu case solve the problem of the speedo & driveshaft matching problems?? Tell me I'm barling up the wrong tree or not. |

Ian, Wouldn't that require even more work in the way of custom adaptors. Custom either way but I allways thought that you would have more aftermarket support when you moved away from the mitsubishi t-cases. Plus you would still keep the slip yokes. |
Quote: thanks Ian Dont mean to be a pest, but I think you're the only one thats had contact with them over there. If he can email me back, I wont have to bother you But at the same time, I dont know if they deal with you, they might favor you more and give us a better deal? *wishful thinking* haha.Let me know, thanks for the help! |
Doug, From what I have read you need adaptors anyway, this way you wouldnt have speedo or driveshaft matching issues & could keep the 4wdh for the highway, anyway why do you need a slip yoke the Paj doesnt have one stock.? |
for me I would prefer the 3.15 gears because it requires less mods, it allows me to retain the awd mode, my interior would still look stock, and 3.15 would provide me with an adequate crawl ratio for off-roading. An automatic tranny typically does not require as low of a crawl ratio as a manual tranny. I would down for a set if the price was right. |

Theres at least 3-5 individuals interested, maybe more once we get the ball rolling. Once I hear back from Ian or directly from Mark, we can start a separate new post with details and make it happen |

I'm sure there will be more if a group buy gets worked out. Thanks for checking into this. The gears have been out of my reach financially, but I sure would like to get a set. Now if we can just find someone in North America to cut some 5.29 gears, we'd be set! |

Guys, I have just called marks 4wd, sorry I couldnt do it earlier in the week. I asked about the non reply to emails & was told that basically everything associated with their premises move & coming back from the Xmas break has meant a delay in attending to incoming emails, etc I was assured that emails will be eventually answered & that new batches of out of stock gears would be available in 3 weeks or so. I reckon it still wouldnt hurt to send a follow up email just in case. Hope this works out for you guys as these are about the only option available for the Pajeros/Monties. sorry i cant tell you any more. |

Thanks for the feedback Ian! I'll send him an email again. Are you able to persuade any better pricing compared to someone that's never dealt with him, like me if you have any spare time. I'll still email him tho to let him know there's interest here in the US

FYI, I'm going to Melbourne... Will be there in April for business (my clients are in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra (ACT)). Ian, would love to meet with you while I'm in Canberra although I may be swamped for that part of the trip as we're meeting with a major government agency and their onsite consultancy since they're looking at a large site license for our software. I recall Frank (Misterbishi / Mister Bishi) was from the Melbourne area. Anyone still in contact with him? I'd like to touch base with him and possibly meet with him as well. I do recall he goes by Bitsamissin on Outer Limits but that ID hasn't posted since 2010!! ![]() Anyhow, while in Melbourne I'll be about 30-40 miles from Marks 4WD/Hardman Brothers. NO I'M NOT BUYING THEM ALL AND BRINGING THEM BACK FOR YOU. If you want I am willing to speak with them about the buy if you want though. I'll respond in the group buy thread though... In preparation for the trip I spoke with the Sandy at Mark's 4WD. He confirmed they were purchased by Hardman Bro's & says they should hopefully have a showroom ready by then for me to see. I told them it wasn't important to me. I didn't need to see the 'flash' since I already knew the gears were good. I also mentioned that we have been trying to contact them but hadn't seen any emails returned yet. He told me that they moved after they were purchased by the Hardman Brothers (I suspect internet access was limited) which delayed them from responding but now all emails should have been replied to. If not, please resend them the email. As for me, I hope I'll have the dinero for the gears for my trip so I can bring them back in my suitcase (SERIOUSLY). We'll see. Sandy did say that they hope to have newly cut 3.15:1 Gen II gears ready right around the time I'm there so me having the cash in hand isn't the only factor here.

Sounds like a fun trip, how long you going for? Yeah, last I spoke with Ian, he said to resend the email again. I did that & I still haven't seen a reply back. I'm ready for a set myself, I just need to get in contact with someone that can make them or light a match under Marks And yeah, speaking of frank, what ever happen to him after he sold the SAS Pajero? I saw Breif pics of someone doing a body swap on it at a very different approach, with a crane But I'd also like to know who purchased his Pajero and is it still up & running. If you find Frank, tell him hey from everyone here, I miss seeing his pics & info! And as for the gears... So you are bringing a suitcase over or you aren't bringing a suit case over? haha |

Hi Angelo, I really dont know whats going on with Hardmanns or Marks 4wd. As I mentioned a while ago I have spoken with Lee Hardmann (marks brother) & also to the guys at Marks 4WD. They all say the gears are going to be restocked again. Frank Zanetti aka MisterBishi (on this forum) or Bitsamissin on:http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum is your best bet, he knows Mark personally. Also I note that Ray is coming to Oz soon & was hoping to catch up with Mark in Melbourne. cheers |

Afraid there won't be too much catching up as Melbourne will be the busiest city for me. I've got dinner with one client the evening we arrive, then 6 onsite client meetings the following day plus a lunch for another client then on to Canberra. If anything we may be able to meet for drinks that evening from 5:00-5:30 but will have to play that by ear since our last meeting could also go longer than expected. ![]() FWIW, I have been able to contact Marks Adapters via phone at 011 61 3 9702 7366. I've also been able to contact Hardman Bros 011 61 3 9551 5566. That's exactly how you need to dial it. 011 switches the call to an international call versus domestic. 61 is the country code for Australia. 3 is the prefix for Victoria where they're located. When I spoke with them previously they said they had responded to ALL email requests including yours. ![]() Not sure where the communication failure is so I suggest ringing them up. At most the call shouldn't cost more than a few dollars unless you call them with your cell phone in which case it will be a few dollars per minute versus for the entire call. Yup, seen that. Avoided it. More than Happy to advise on it. ![]() HTH. |

I called and spoke with the guys at Marks 4WD adapters last night and also got confirmation emails from them on my gears being shipped. FYI... They are off all of next week for Easter so don't expect anything until the week after. As I mentioned in my Australia trip thread I'd be willing to ring them for you in a couple of weeks to help iron things out. I can confirm that currently the gears are still being cut and definitely not ready to sell yet. Along those lines I learned from discussions with Frank/MisterBishi that Mark Hardeman (gear cutter) told Frank that the cutting of the gears also requires the shop to heat treat them afterwards in order to increase their strength to acceptable levels. This heat treating results in the metal shrinking. They have to go through numerous R&D gear sets before they can reliably determine the original starting size of the pre-milled metal so the the finished product is the right size every time. That said, Mark could make bigger R&P gears but we'd have to buy enough to cover the cost of the R&D process. I SERIOUSLY doubt there are enough buyers (probably need well over 100) to make the project cost effective & profitable for him. SIGH...
Off roader, I am not sure I follow what you just said. Are you saying that the whole process is a hit & miss affair because the gear cutter doesnt know how much the gears will shrink after heating. Surely gears cutting must be more precise that this, after all I believe Hardmann also make the side gears for ARB lockers. |
Quote: Your right Ian. He does work with ARB although recently I heard they may have gone with a cheaper alternative in Asia which is why cheap ARB lockers are being sold in Asia. As for the shrinkage it's consistent but they don't know exactly how big it needs to be during the design phase. Once they do a few samples the are able to figure it out so it can be produced consistently. At least that's what I understand. Maybe someone who is willing to look the process up or knows more about the process is here and can chime in.
Ray, But given that these gears have already been designed for many years now shouldnt they already know what the shrinkage rate is?? Or maybe the problem occurs with every batch made & since the source material would be different from gears made years ago , they need to work out the shrinkage rate of the new source material?? Maybe Frank can elaborate if he's reading. |
If I read it correctly, you mean we'd have to buy somewhere around 100 to,produce Newer bigger gears? But the gears (3.15) have already been copied & being made, just need to be heat treated, right?
Quote: As far as I know the case cannot take bigger gears, I spoke to mark some years ago about that. |
Sorry about the confusion guys. The shrinkage happens consistently each time you cut gears. In the case of the xcase gears, he's already determined the correct size to make them so this production/manufacturing shrinkage is no longer an issue. I was asking Frank why Mark doesnt make a set of 5.29:1 r&p for the SR's? He told me its due to this gear shrinkage & number he'd have to go through in R&D to figure out the exact cutting dimensions prior to heat treating to produce a good set. We'd have to pay for that if we wanted other kinds of gears like r&p's made up by Mark or any other gear cutter. It helps explain why so few companies are willing to make r&p gears.

G'day Guys, Mark Hardman here. Along with Frank (aka Bitsamissin) we designed the original Gen 1 Mitsy Low range gear set. I have since produced Gen 2, 3 & 4 sets all with great success and feed back. For me this was a side line project to help those who wanted low range gearing for their rigs that no one else was interested in helping. Our main gig is Mining equipment and parts for the oil and gas industry along with a lot of medical, scientific and some helicopter gearboxes thrown in the mix. In November 2011 I purchased Marks 4WD Adaptors based in Dingley, Melbourne, Australia. We now have an outlet for selling and distributing the products we manufacture. We started producing more gear sets in 2011 but with the integration of the new company along with already having a decent work load it has taken some time. The gears will be stocked by Marks 4WD Adaptors so there is no need for a group buy. We are currently producing sets for Gen 1, 2, 3 & 4. All sets will be ready to ship by the end of April. We also produce low range sets for Nissan patrol and Toyota Landcruiser 40, 60 & 80 series. We also produce sequential racing transmissions under the Star Transaxles logo. www.startransaxles.com www.marks4wd.com You can email me - mark@hardmanbros.com.au I hope this clears up any misinformation. Mark, great to hear from you, & thanks for coming online. Interesting you say you have developed gears for the Gen4. Does that include the diesels with auto tranny in the NT. It got a new transmission assumedly to take the extra torque of the upgrated 3.2 tdi. I matched some part numbers with my local Mitsu guy some time ago & we determined that the NT diesel tranny had a different input gear than previous models. The other 2 gears all had the same part number. |
Although not a Mitsy expert I have sold gears for the Gen 4 which as far as I know are the same as the Gen 3. I stand to be corrected; as the manufacturers change design so frequently it's hard to keep up so we would have to try, or I would need a transfer case in question to test fitment. Mark |

Thanks for the info Mark. Good to hear the info, been anxious to hear the news. So a group buy wouldn't benefit a few of us here in the US? I guess it wouldn't cause once in the US, it would have to go to different states. How do we get prices & shipping costs? Thanks for joining and sharing the info

Got some new info from Mark via email. Explained that a group buy may not benefit cause of importing considering size & price of objects in shipment. So looks like individual purchases may benefit more & it goes directly to you compared to group buy/bulk going to one central location then distributing them out. Some of you may already have this info if you've contacted him, just wanted to put it out there. And as mentioned above, should be ready near end of this month. I think I'll be ready sometime next month, who else is serious? I live in VA btw just incase a close neighbor wanted to buy a set

Angelo, Pricing on Marks 4WD Adapters website indicates the gears are AU$1395 plus shipping. The package they shipped to my hotel room in was approximately 10x20x30cm and the weight was only 10K based on what they told me. The gears themselves are no more than ~15lbs in total. They may be able to fit them into a smaller box 10x20x20cm or so. From that you can probably calculate international shipping from a range of shippers although as you could imagine there's also handling that could be factored into the total amount. |

Just trying to go the best route. Mark made it sound like packing them in one box was going to end up being costly compared to sending them separately. If the interest has died down some, we may have no choice but to buy separately

Hello Ray, It's a pity we couldn't meet up and take you to see Mark and his operation. You would be drooling when you see the dedicated shelf with all the Mitsi gears sitting there (drool would have later been washed away with numerous local beers). Guys, has anyone checked out these people. http://northwestfab.3dcartstores.com/NWF-BlackBox-Underdrive-Unit_c_13.html A setup that would retain the standard low but give you the option of doubling it would be great. There are times when my 3.15 is just too low & times when its not enough!. I have a spare tranny/case & I pulled the case off. It seems to be larger than the doubler unit, but maybe some adaptors could be made. I had a look under the Paj as well. , does anyone reckon there is room to put in a doubler?? It would mean the Mistu case sits back further approx 8" (more with adaptors). The problem would be the crossmember that holds the torsion bar mounts. The attractive thing about putting an underdrive between the tranny & Mistu case is that you get to keep the Super Select (Active-Track for you guys) & dont have to worry about speedo stuff, BUT shafts would have to be lenghtened & shortened. The autos in our Gen 2.5 have 23 splines so would seem to be compatiable with the above unit. BTW they are very well priced., Just a thought. |

Just got back an email from Paul (works at Marks) just informed me that they aren't producing the 3.15's anymore, they changed the ratio to 2.7's. Not to the Gen 2 without the jeep transmission tailhousing. The above adapter concept would allow for the 6 bolt round cases to be fit directly to the Gen 2 transmission, so there would be no need for a modified pulse ring and it would be better at carrying the weight of dual cases. The mitsu is designed to carry a heavy case and the Jeep is not (not that there have been any issues). The adapter i will have to RE submit to a local shop, Sumner Machine hosed on the project likely due to me being out of state. I also might just have to make a prototype myself and just have it copied to ensure it's correct the first time. That could take some time.... |

I'm just surprised nothing was said or even slightly hinted to you or the 4x4 world that they were even thinking of doing this change. What's even more surprising, is that when I spoke with Mark over a month ago originally, we were talking about 3.15 gears thw whole time. Then some Elliot fellow has emailed me recently telling me that it's been changed to 2.7. Weird!

With all the moaning and groaning aside, the 2.85's are great in the underpowered Gen 1. I crawled right through the dusy loaded to the hilt with two passengers and camping gear to accomodate the wife and daughter. I would think 2.7's would be nice improvement for the more powerfull SR which can go through the Con and other tough trails with the stock T-case gears... |

Justice, you're right, 2.7's aren't totally horrible, it's just after having access to 3.15's & getting the rugged sweeped from under us, it's depressing. And at the same price I might add! Most recent email, bad news, good news & more bad news haha Quote: |

Quote: Somewhere I am guessing someone down in OZ talked Mark into making the change so they can be installed in the manual trannies and so they would be more conducive to overlanding instead of rock crawling. I have a feeling our opinion really does not matter. While I wish the ratio would have stay at 3.15, the 2.7 gear ratio will be adequate for the type of offroading I enjoy doing which is overlanding. But the price really needs to be in the $700-900 range like other crawler gears. At $1400 they are way over priced. I am not really looking to tackle the Rubicon. Because of the slip yoke design these t-cases really are not designed for rock crawling. If you plan to rock crawl you would be better off going with an atlas or an NVG241. |

I suspect they've been considering this decision for quite some time since it is a potentially huge support problem for any sales to MT owners and his team finally decided on it once this set of gears had to be cut.

That is too bad. Due to the meager transmission gearing, the Montero really needs the reduction. To me the prices are great considering how much they must lose or barely make selling so few sets. Supply and demand! |

agreed, & it was really great that someone was prepared to make the gears for us, we all know how hard its been getting stuff made for Paj/Monty. It took ARB ages to be convinced to do lockers & I am sure the market is still miniscule compared the Jeeps, nissans or Toyotas. Would be good if someone could come up with a kit for a duel case setup! that didnt cost the earth! |

As it sits, we don't have no more than 10 people really interested. Granted, as the Gen 1's become older, others will be looking to upgrade to a Gen II or II.5. I'd would be in for sure BUT how do we put someone in charge of collecting deposits and HOW do we pay the difference of the other 10 sets that would have to be stored til others are ready to purchase the remainder of the gears one by one? I have no doubt they would eventually all get sold. At the same time, we may be able to get Aussie owners interested that have autos too to help sell or be part of that original 20 set purchase. If we pull together as a group, it can be done. I've seen Isuzu guys do it. Have a pot that if someone is interested, can donate temporary til the rest are sold throughout the years. We would keep track of who's put in what and that person can get it back once gears are sold. That being said, I'll purchase a set of 3.15's at $950 est, and I think I could donate $100-200 to put towards future sets. But the more that buy up front, the less that would be needed to donate. Am I making any sense? ![]() Just a thought, Input? |

I'd maybe start by posting the idea up on the Aussie sites to gauge interest (Outerlimits4x4.com & pajeroclub.com.au) and the money can possibly handled through some kind of online escrow service?

guys, i reckon you are going to be pushing it uphill to get 20 orders although that is a very reasonable target set by the manufacturer. for all the reasons i have mentioned in other posts & speaking form experience I still reckon the best way forward would be to develop a kit do make a doubler. I'm talking independantly to NWest Fab about their unit & I have to do some measurements this weekend. But given all the experience & knowledge on this forum , especially the guys who have actually fitted doublers a team effort may be the way to go instead of indivuality. I would be willing to chip in $$$ to get the project started if others are interested as well. Otherwise I will probably go it alone with the Black Box untit & try getting adaptors made here locally in OZ. cheers |

A doubler that works with the OE xcase I have would be preferred so I don't loose my current investment on the 3.15's.
yes that is my preferred option too, sorry I should have state that. I want tp keep the active trac. I wouldnt be retaining the 3.15s however as that gearing would be way too low for me at 113.1 , you would never be able to pull the thing up with brakes (auto tranny), you'd have to put in in N to be able to do anything. With the standard 1.90 gears & a 2.7 doubler the low would be 68:1 ideal. |
A doubler would be cool but 3.15 would be the most I'd need, I think so are we going to try & push the group buy of 20 sets? I'm not a frequent user on the other sites, actually haven't been over in years. Would someone be able to round up some interest there just to get the pot stirring & see what we can come up with? I think between the 2 boards/sites, I believe we could drum up enough interest. Where do we start? |

Is there any reason a Klune wouldn't work? |

only that it is too expensive!! $2500 last time i looked. |
Quote: So a Klune would work if it were fitted with a short shaft, is that what you're saying? If that's the case that may be a really good option. If you could mount a 2.7 Klune that would be ideal. It would give you the the following crawl ratios. 4hi = 2.8*4.63*1.0 = 13:1 4lo = 2.8*4.63*1.9 = 25:1 4hi & Klune = 2.8*4.63*1.0*2.7 = 35:1 4lo & Klune = 2.8*4.63*1.9*2.7 = 67:1 With these ratios and an automatic tranny this would be a sweet setup. This would also allow you to retain the Select Trac system in the vehicle. Klune also make a 4:1 ratio but that would give you a 99:1 crawl ratio and that is to low for the kind of wheeling I want to do. |
THought it would be worth mentioning that if you wanted an underdrive in front of the stock superselect case YOU WILL NEED AN SAS the reason for this is that the torsion bar crossmember will be in the way for the large mitsu case. Having said that you could go with a double NP231 like Nathan C or a doubler and a gear driven case. As for 2 speed T-cases I think 3.15 is the perfect all around ratio for doing everything. 4:1 is good for crawling but sucks for trailing when you need more torque but don't need to drive 5mph (hills, ruts, sand, heavy loads ect.) 3.15:1 can crawl but you'll still need to give it some throttle at times and if you get really deep they can stall (or torque converter slip) They're ok for trailing but if the terrain varies a lot you can find yourself stopping and shifting frequently 2.7:1/2.8:1 is awesome for trailing, you get good torque in the lower gears and can still get to good speeds between the rough stuff. Not so good for crawling unless you're rocking 31's expect to stall even with a big motor like 3.5. 1.9:1 stock. Is good for trailing around and high speed dirt, there is no such thing as crawling with these gears. Now many an Az Crewer hits the rocks with 1.9 and 2.7 T-case gears, they just do it at a higher RPM. Much entertainment follows ![]() Even if you don't rock crawl you should consider a transfer case regear, lower gears = less shock loads and longer lasting parts. Once regeared your capability goes through the roof, lower RPM = less wheel spin and more traction. In my opinion I would do the transfer case gears before the big tires and before lockers. |

yes agreed however the Klune is just too exxy. The NW fab unit achieves the same but is $1k cheaper. http://northwestfab.3dcartstores.com/NWF-BlackBox-Underdrive_c_7.html |

Quote: It certainly does look like a tight fit, thats why I was interested in the short 4" version of the blackbox, but if the cross memebr is in the way I believe it could be modified by cutting the centre out (retaining the ends where the torsion bar bolts on) and welding in a dog leg section allowing the dueler enough clearance. |
you are correct the cross member is going to be in the way & it cant be modified as the placement of the torsion bar mounts will not allow this. Therefore the only option if I want to keep the Paj case is to pursue the Blackbox shorter unit which is only meant to be 4". |

Who's got the scoop on trannies vs. gear sets? The 2.85s were different for MT vs. AT. I think the 3.15s were too? I could be up for a set, but would want to do it with the 95 MT drive train. (Which I am leaning on keeping to put under the 2000...) My 87 has a short shelf life at this point as I will not be doing any hard trails in the foreseeable future. Need to thin the heard as Jr. will be driving in another year. I love how the 2.85s in the SWB drive and am envisioning a better all-around LWB for back country adventures. |

Quote: I'm going to see if I can chat with him a bit. If I knew from the get go the triton group were in a group buy for 3.15's, I would've jumped on it. Honestly, I'm kinda upset to learn this considering I've been contacting him for months and not once was this mentioned. Ian & Ray. There may be some leftover Triton guys that werent able to get in on the last group buy. How can we get them in on it too? |

Ok. Several things out on the table here. Who can confirm these? 1st, a Mitsubishi owner on Pajeroclub site mentioned that gear masters in the US made these 3.15 gears? 2nd, The Triton guys said they had a group buy lined up that should be completed soon that they used Rodney at Wholesale automatics to set up the group buy with Mark. 3rd, I asked about this group buy with the tritons and was it possible to get a easier target number for the 2nd group buy. Now some new News, spoke with Mark and he told me a few things..... Read below... "Hi Angelo, The group buy from the Triton forum never went ahead to our knowledge, the customers may have purchased them individually. We can supply any amounts of the 3.15 gears but the price will go up as the gears are usually made in batches of 20. I will get them to quote up making a batch of 10"
Update: Pervious Email is actually from a gentleman named Elliot that works with Mark. Got another email this morning. He did indeed confirm that there is a current set of gears made up for Wholesale Automatics for the Triton group. Either way, doesn't matter who it was for, the fact that 3.15 gears were being produced for anyone & we werent told about it makes me upset, considering I originally asked them Months ago! It's like saying "OH, those 3.15 gears, they aren't for the tritons, they are for wholesale auto. So.... You guys will have to start another group buy" ![]() Surely they could've added 10 more to that batch when we started this whole process asking them to make 3.15 gears several months ago, right? Which leads me to believe that someone was playing silly (to be nice) and trying to get more group buys going on without letting the next interested party know about a current group buy in the works. So with that being said, Wholesale Auto MAY have a few more leftover or uncalled for OR we wait to see if Elliot can get a group buy for less than 20 sets. Either way, guess I'll know something soon. |
Quote: Yeah, you should definitely take that up with them. In addition to learning about the other group buy, I was also very surprised to learn they changed the ratio without letting us know in advance. Of course the reality is, they're the only source of gears so,the reality is we're sort of at his mercy.

Nothing yet. Would like to stir up the pot a little on the other sites, but I'm like the new kid in the school over there for anyone to listen. If others that are regulars there could get some info. Te only other known group to achieve 3.15 gears were the tritons but I don't know any of them or the company that helped set up their group buy That company that helped them could very well have some left over, but I dot know who to contact. Still wait to hear back from Elliot or mark. Sent 2 emails. I'll post once I hear back Anyone care to research the Triton group buy or the company that helped them? |

Justice, we are def leaning towards a whole new batch. I'll need to go back and contact the guys at Marks company and tell them what we need to move forward. On a side note, Rodney at Wholesale Auto Transmission had started a group buy nearly a year ago (a couple months before I had asked about doing a group buy), but Marks company filled this order but never told me that this particular group buy was in motion. Instead to referring me to Rodney's group buy, he told me I'd have to start a new group buy (a little sneaky if you ask me but oh well). Now we are just about where we need to be with our group buy, but I've talked to Rodney via email and tho he hasnt committed to another group buy, its up in the air. If he does, he may be able to include the Triton group and even has the purchase power to buy extra sets and sit on it for a short time, thus making the price for these gears lower due to the quanity purchased. If I dont hear back from Rodney or if thats something he isnt interested in for now, we can proceed and find out what the price would be for our group. Rodney had the advantage of being able to buy several sets and ship them out from his warehouse, thats where we lack. I'll find out what options we have, but no worries. If Rodney cant commit then we will proceed with our group buy. |

An email I had back in September. That's why I was saying I dropped the ball. Of we can get atleast 10 interested then we can proceed. This is the email from Elliot at Marks 4WD... Quote: Then the email from Rodney to possible generate more interest. But from the sounds of it, we'll have to do the leg work ourselves and get on Pajero & Triton sites. But I don't have connections on those sites as a few individuals here that visit & post on those sites often.... Quote: |

At these prices you could swap in a Rocktrac 241 and have 4:1. On the high side you could spend 4k and swap in an Atlas 4 speed, I learned that the Atlas 2 speed and Stak 3 speed are to short to allow driveshaft/T-bar crossmember clearance on a LWB obviously it can be done on a SWB with IFS. |
Toasty, surely the Atlas 4 speeder would be more that $1400! & how would it mate to the tranny?? & how would you run the speedo?? No doubt the Active Trac would be lost too. |
sorry mate just realised you said $4k for the Atlas, anyway still interested in how it could be done. |

Tailhousing from a Jeep Cherokee bolted to the AW3 trans, and order the Atlas with 23 Spline short shaft would be my guess. Same way they hooked up the 241 rocktrack to Lloyd's rig. If these gears don't pan out for a decent price, I'll probably go with the 4 to 1 rocktrack myself. |
If you want 4hi for the street, use a 242j with an aw3 jeep tailhousing on the mitsu trans. It's as strong as a 231 but it has a center diff, which locks in 4lo or 4hilocked. You may be able to use a 231 front case on a 242, too. The 242 has about a 2.85 lo range, and may well be able to fit a lot 0f 231 gears, but I'm not sure of that. May be able to fit the 241OR 4.0 gears. |

Keep in mind the Rock Track is NOT CHEAP. Use T/case command 650-1100. I got mine for 650.00 but I think they made a mistake. They are in huge demand. Then you need a 140.00 shift kit, then a 200.00 speedo kit(if you get the wrong one) then 650.00 in new drive shafts, I forgot what the adapter was...Yes you get lower gearing, but it is really more expensive as I found out. |

So now it's time to put your money where your mouth is. Email me your info and I'll pass it along to Rodney. He will need $450 deposit and the rest at a later date. Just go buy a different T-case, 3.15's are OK but they kind of fall in between 2 more useful ranges those being 2:1 and 4:1. You end up loosing a good cruising low range and they still stall out during more technical crawling, i think stock or 4:1 would be better depending on how you wheel. If your wheeling style is more diverse look into an Atlas 4 speed or Stak 3 speed, if you're on a budget go with a doubler/D300. |

I hear ya toasty! When it comes to all that custom stuff, I'm dead in the water. Unless its more straight forward than the 3.15 swap or someone that lives close to me could help, then 3.15's would be my direction, for now. It's not too bad, I modified a stock T-case mount to work with the NV241 transfer case. The bad thing with the Gen 2 is you need to run the larger cases othewise the rear drive shaft because it hits the torsion bar crossmember. |

To give you an idea what i'm talking about here is one they make for a GM turbo 400 to GM 203 Toasty did you ever go ahead with this? |
I think I saw toasty post a pic of the adapter plate. So you are basically saying with the adapter, you would be replacing out factory t-case with another that has potential of doing more? |
it would allow you to bolt on a any of the 6 bolt cases and not have to change your tailhousing, i'd have to find another machine shop as sumner decided my money wasn't worth anything. The tail housing swap isn't hard to do but i know most people don't just have access to a lathe or a machine shop to machine their pulse gear. Swapping the tailhousing should cost under a 100 dollars, that's buying the jeep tailhousing ($30-70) and machining the pulse gear ($20-50). At that point bolt on your favorite T-case and have driveshafts made. What we did to Lloyd's '96 was the jeep tailhousing, 4:1 rubicon transfer case, dakota digital speedo, Tom Woods driveshaft. I will post up the total on that later but that would be one of the more expensive routes to go but not too far off from the Aussie gears. |
yeah but still not a dueller, so really all you get is a deeper low range ratio depending upon what case you use, we really need someone to come up with a way(easy) for duel cases allowing to keep the active trac! |

Quote: Put a doubler in front of the '92/'93 Montero transfer case, they are a 6 bolt case but the dowel doesn't line up so you need to remove it and drill a hole on the flange. But this doesn't actually work on a gen 2 with a 12v 3.0 because the torsion bar crossmember is in the way so you'd need to swap it onto a 3.5 powered truck and use the tailhousing from a jeep or an earlier montero. See NathanC's post on installing a doubler into a Gen 2, but replace the second NP231 with the early gen 2 super select case. be prepared to cut a new hole for your shifter or modify to use a Delica shifter if possible. |
Toasty, why would you want to run an early Gen 2 case in a 3.5l , aint that going backwards given that the earlier cases are much smaller & less strong that the 3.5l case?? |
They're not that much smaller and since you'd have a Low Low in the area of 5:1 the shock loads wouldn't be as bad as if you were running stock gears or 3.15's in the big case. Plus it's not like the older Gen 2 cases were weak they're just a step down, i've seen a 4cyl T-case hold up to rock crawling and 3.5 DOHC with lockers and 35's. there are other options for retaining AWD but they all involve similar sized T-cases. |
Oh I see, so let me know if I have got this right. You still need to use a NP as the first transfer case in the drivetrain & you put the Gen 2 case behind that. Does that then solve the issue with the speedo?? |
Maybe if you use the early gen 2 parts, otherwise you'll need the signal converter from dakota digital. |
