2.4/2.3? swap for 2.6

Just a bit of research, I have read a bit on this swap. I apologize if this is out there but can somebody tell me the easiest method for this swap? Can I just take the motor and transmission/transfer case from a donor MightyMax ect for this swap in to a Montero? I apologize again if this is in a sticky or out there. I have an 86 carbed manual that Id love to replace. I just would like an easier solution to smog. Thanks again.

Can I use the whole thing tranny/case in the Montero to eliminate need for spacers and such? I have a manual tranny.

The transmission case will be different: cable (pickup) vs. hydraulic (Montero) clutch.

The 86 truck should have the same block as the Montero, same - same??

Re: 2.4/2.3? swap for 2.6

Im looking for more smog compliance! EFI cause the carbed stuff is not doin it for Cali anymore. I know there are tons of efi MM and D50s out there. Is it possible to convert the tranny? Just wonderin. My 86 just sits, and I want it to work and smog AND possibly pick up a few more mpg. I wont give up on her haha.

Re: 2.4/2.3? swap for 2.6

Toasty in AZ has lots of experience and a quite long thread on the 2.4l conversion. The 2.3l is a diesel engine. Look up Toasty's thread on the AZ crew board.

Otherwise, consider an FI swap on the 2.6l using Starion parts?? My pickup returns about 18 - 20 mpg with the turbo.

Re: 2.4/2.3? swap for 2.6

To swap in a 2.4, you'll need the engine wiring harness and computer. You need to add an electric fuel pump. You have to smack the oil pan with a hammer (gently) to get it to clear the front differential pumpkin. It will bolt up, however (automatic transmissioned set-ups are different).

Your A/C compressor won't bolt up directly; neither will your power steering pump. The engine sits back quite a bit further than the 2.6, so you have to use a spacer if you plan to reuse the engine driven cooling fan.

Make sure to install the heater hoses on the donor engine before you put it in the engine bay. It's even harder to get them on later than it is on a 2.6.

When you're done, come on over and finish mine!

All pickups with 2.3L diesel have a hydraulic clutch like the Montero.

Re: 2.4/2.3? swap for 2.6

I'd swap in the Montero Automatic and run the 2.4 (2.4's are wide block) look for an earlier Mighty max 2.4 so that it will have the 6 bolt crank (not sure on the exact years for the 6 bolt). I used a later Mighty Max 7 bolt 2.4, I had to buy the Pajero flexplate and adapter from mitsubishiparts.net i think it was under $250.
You can get a more powerfull 2.4 from a Montero sport too, those should be 7 bolt too.

I'm doing a 2.3 swap into a '88 montero right now and although it's pretty cool i think if i had to buy a diesel and start a new swap it would be a 4M40.

Yes!

2.4 w/dohc 2.0 heads and turbo and a/t with MS3 and a fuel pump. Killer combo. The 2.0 dohc turbo had 194hp stock, iirc. That would be at least 233hp at stock settings for the 2.4. Might need some lower CR pistons and an intercooler, but it would scoot. The torque with the a/t will put the 4m40 to shame, I bet. And the WHeeeeee sound is priceless. The turbo sounds good, too...

Sorry, I was talking 2.3 (4D55) vs the 2.8 (4M40) I'm getting into the diesel world now . I forgot they also call the gas 2.4 with 2.0 head a 2.3, but yeah those engines produce some serious power.

The 2.4 DOHC swap is about the hardiest swap I have ever done ..From brake booster mod to truck cable trans swap .To hand carved billet water neck to get the coolant to the front of the head ...To custom turbo header ...To swaping the TB to the other side of the intake and so on and so on....If the AZ crew is ever up the hill come check out the Gravel Monty.. Is set up for Stage Rally not rock crawling...It is down right now it seams to of spit a piston skirt... ..

Be careful on the 2.4 in a truck with a auto ...Theres wide and narrow block motors ... And the books and OEM info is wrong ...As alot of Mitsu oem info is wrong ... The early 90's was a time when Mitsu was being cut up and sold for a tax write off....

I've done four or five SOHC 2.4 swaps ..Best swap for a GEN1...

Have a good day
