Tire Experiences Thread

Thought this might be beneficial for folks looking at new tires. Please post your experience with tires. Include tire brand, model, size, dates used (rough dates are fine) and your opinion of them in varied terrain. If you have specific questions about a tire, ask them here too. Don't post general questions like which tire you should get here. I'll just delete those posts.

Update: 1/28/09 4:00pmIt was suggested that we include pricing but IMHO any pricing would simply become outdated and invalid withing months to 1/2 a year since tire costs are simply not very stable and continue to rise each year.

I'll start.

BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM2 35x12.5x15
Date Used: Feb 20, 2009 - present
On Road (dry & wet): relatively quiet but based on what I've read they need to be properly rotated and balanced frequently or they will get noisy.
On Road (snow) Unknown yet. Will update as required.
Dirt Trails: Work great. Lots of traction.
Rock: What limited crawling I've done, they've held up well. Will update this once I get my rock skids on and go on a more serious Krawl!

BFG Mud Terrain KM 33x12.5x15
Date Used: 2/11/03 - present
On Road (dry & wet): Good Traction, relatively quiet but have to be properly rotated and balanced frequently or they will get noisy.
On Road (snow): ok traction but could be better. Slow down if driving on packed snow with these tires cause if you hit a patch of ice...
Dirt Trails: Work great. Good traction although not as good as the Geolander MT's I had before these.
Rock: They've held up quite well but again the Geolander MT's trounce them. Just too bad the Geolanders end up used up within a year.

Geolander MT 33x12.5x15
Dates Used: 2001'ish to 2003
On Road (Dry & Wet): Good traction but then again I'm not racing my truck from light to light. I'm relatively light on the skinny pedal except on the freeway. In all instances thought the Geolanders have been great.
On Road (Snow): Same as other tires above.
Dirt Trails: These Tires ROCK! They have tons of traction!!
Rock: See my comment on the Dirt Trails!!
Comment: Major Downside to these tires are they were worn out within a year! Boo to Yokohama. I hear it was so bad they upgraded their compound adding more silicates for longer wear but I'll leave it to others to test them. At 155 each when BFG's are only 130 each I'll go back to BFG MT's!

Goodyear MT/R 35x12.5x15
On Road (dry & wet): Good dry, really bad wet

Dunlop M/T 33x12.5x15
On Road (dry & wet): ok super loud
On Road (snow): N/A
Dirt Trails: ok
Rock: ok
overall good really cheap tire, sidewalls as thin as Goodyears

Toyo Open Country M/T 35x13.5x15
On Road (dry & wet): Excelent and very quiet
On Road (snow): Good
Dirt Trails: Work great. Excelent
Rock: Awesome
Overall premium tire, 3+ years and 40k+ Miles never have gone flat even after picking up 9 nails. Flex really well when aired down, very balanced tire they took very little to balance, super thick sidewall. The only downside is the price and they are heavy (89lbs each) but very worth it i will be buying another set this month

Toyo Open Country A/T 35x12.5x15
On Road (dry & wet): very good so far Excelent wet traction kinda noisey though
On Road (snow): TBD
Dirt Trails: TBD
Rock: TDB
Overall i've only had these on my 94 for 2 weeks but if they are anything like the M/T I'll be happy.

I got super swamper LTB a few months ago. Can't say for sure about how they are on the steering axle because I haven't got those yet but on the back they are awesome all around. Not a DD so not worried about mileage

Tire 31x11.50-15 Super Swamper LTB not many miles yet
Date Used just for a few months.
On Road (dry & wet)pretty good for both so far.
On Road (snow) really good and great on snow trails.

Date Used: Late 2008 to present, about 18,000 miles and still going
On Road (dry & wet): Ehh
On Road (snow): Ok / Good, didn't need chains last Feb. going to Reno over I-80
Dirt Trails: Awesome
Rock: No grading jobs right now, but on a rocky section of trail suffered many sidewall cuts at street pressure.

Tire: LT235/85-16 BFG All-Terrain on a 1-ton 4x4 Dodge pickup and 31x10.5-15 on Montero
Date Used: 1996-1998 when truck was stolen, about 30,000 miles and about 40K on Montero
On Road (dry & wet): Good, truck didn't go very fast or corner too well
On Road (snow): Good, didn't need chains pulling a line of Samurais after a snow wheelin' run on my hitch in Lake Arrowhead, CA with the Dodge
Dirt Trails: Awesome
Rock: Not so well on dirty rock grading jobs due to high street pressure, better with the Montero

Tire: P245/70-17 General Ameritrak
Date Used: 2005 to 2006, about 15,000 miles and were dead.
On Road (dry & wet): OEM tires sucked
On Road (snow): Same
Dirt Trails: Ehh
Rock: Cut up the tread badly going over scraper roads, parked on a road and watched a tire go flat with no damage to the sidewalls or tread. Upon removal of tire from the rim, observed delamination within the center of the tire

Tire: 31x10.5-15 Yokohama Geolander All-Terrain
Date Used: Late 1998 to mid 1999, about 15,000 miles and were dead
On Road (dry & wet): Can you say, "Totally Awesome?"
On Road (snow): Ok, packed up easily at slow speeds, but cleared out upon spinning wheels
Dirt Trails: Awesome
Rock: Cut up the tread badly going over scraper roads

Tire: 33x12.5-15 Futura All-Terrains bought off Pirate member for cheap - best used tires I've had to date

Tire: 33x12.5-15 Nankang Mud-Terrain
Date Used: 2008, about 12,000 miles and set aside for future use when company discontinued vehicle parts reimbursement program
On Road (dry & wet): Not a good cornering tire, ok in straights...fairly quiet
On Road (snow): Ok, packed up easily at slow speeds, but cleared out upon spinning wheels
Dirt Trails: Awesome
Rock: Exceptional while in use, a few grading jobs under their belts

Tire: P265/75-17 Bridgestone Dueler All-Terrain, OEM from a late model FJ but used on our 2wd GMC Sierra Crewcab

On Road (snow): Excellent
Dirt Trails: Excellent
Rock: Laughed at loose rock, 2-ply sidewall but Big-O warranty that I never had to use
Jumping and Autocross ( ): These tires have been my favorite muds. I was never nice, even jumped with the trailer...what a dumb-, but true. Handled twisty-windy roads with ease, controlled.

Date Used: Late 1999 to late 2001
On Road (dry & wet): Excellent

Re: Tire Experiences Thread

Tire 31X10.50 R15 BFG All-Terrian KO
Date Used 09/08-present
On Road (dry & wet) Great, don't even notice the noise, smooth
On Road (snow) Not a lot of snow action, but it got farther than most of the other cars, lots of siping
Dirt Trails Good for hard dirt or moist dirt with hard bottom. Mud, depends, its sub par it the florida mud and useless in clay type mud without enough momentum
Rock not a lot of rock action, slips like all the other tires in the east coast mountains, didn't really do alot of rock(street pressures and 3ply sidewalls)

i have about 2k on them so far so good. They crown a little on 6" wide rims. hardly any wear noticeable. They last a LONG time from what I have heard. cruises at 75mph no problem. I play racecar every once in a while, it never feels like the tires are skidding, folding over, etc. like some of the baloon types do.
great street tire with the once in a while trip

Re: Tire Experiences Thread

Tire Cooper Discoverer Radial LT 285/75R16
Date Used about 8 months
On Road (dry & wet) Drives like any other street tire dry, a bit sketchy when wet.
On Road (snow) No real issues when used at low speed in packed snow/ice.
Dirt Trails Acts just like any other street tire. I've never been stuck using these tires (except for the flat tire issues, but that was on pavement).
Rock Act just like any other street tire on rocks. The only exception is that the tread exhibited far fewer cuts than most street tires I've used in rocks. Very hard compound, poor traction on rocks.

These are the tires my Montero had when I bought it. Extremely poor quality tire. Small punctures in the tread resulted in rusty/broken belts VERY quickly. 3 of the 4 tires I had fell apart from the inside-out. I'll never buy another set of Cooper tires as a result of my experience with these tires (as well as the other Cooper tires I've used on other vehicles).

Tire 33x12.50R15 BFG Mud-Terrain KM
Date Used 2005-present
On Road (dry & wet) Excellent traction dry, good in wet even on oily streets.
On Road (snow) Not as much traction as studded tires, but sufficient for hauling the family to the snow. Almost got stuck when I parked on ice in a silly spot.
Dirt Trails Dirt trails don't mean a lot to me. I've driven everything I've ever owned or been responsible for on some kind of dirt road. I didn't buy these tires for use on dirt roads.
Rock More traction than any other tire I've personally used on rocks. Good pliability when aired down. Tread damage more obvious than on my old Coopers (see above), but I rarely spin these tires on rocks. I've never been truely stuck using these tires with 4WD and a locker.

Also, I have well over 40k on the BFG's and still have more than 50% tread left. I rotate ever 2500 miles and keep my toe set properly.

My wife tells me that my next tires will be BFG KM's as well, even though she yells whenever she hears what they cost. I'll be replacing these tires due to age, not tire wear (in a couple more years).

Re: Tire Experiences Thread

Tire 265-75-R15 Yokohama Geolandar I/T Ice and Snow tires
Date Used Winter 2009, Winter 2010/11
On Road (dry & wet) Fairly quiet for a snow tire on dry pavement. Very good grip on ice. Has worked well in slush and standing water as well. Rarely activates ABS at slippery intersections.
On Road (snow) Very predictable handling, excellent traction, even when pushed hard.
Dirt Trails Only used them on snow-covered dirt trails - useless at 30 psi, good at 20psi as long as you're careful of the sidewalls.
Rock It would be silly to use this soft compound on rocks...

FYI: this tire seems to grip just as well at 50% tread, as brand new. Must have to do with the compound.

Tire 33x1050 15 BFG Mud Terrain KM2 (pizza mudders)
Date Used spring/summer/fall 2009
On Road (dry & wet) Traction and handling are predictable on dry tarmac, average handling on wet - tire noise is slightly quieter than average (in my experience) for a mud tire.
On Road (snow) This is NOT a snow tire. On road, expect ABS to cycle a lot. Traction is not great unless the snow is deep. The BFG AT is better in snow, IMHO, if you have to have a do-it-all tire. Better yet, get a real snow tire and save your MT's for more appropriate usage.
Dirt Trails Excellent handling and traction on dirt.
Rock Low speed traction has been good, on both wet and dry rocks, so far.

Tire: 31-10.5-R15 Peerless Baja WideTrack AT
Miles on Tires 15,000 miles
Date Used Winter 2008 - Current
Road Use Extremely pleased with how quiet they are even on the poorly paved roads of PA
Snow/Ice I had nearly no need to use 4wd the last 2 winters with these tires, and even manage to grip when I drove on a outdoor skating rink
Offroad Fairly decent grip and handling on access roads and forging its way through brush. It was decent in mud until I hit a patch of clay and the tread clogged up.

Overall I am pleased with these tires and will buy again with them costing a little under $100 a tire.

Tire: 31-10.5-R15 Michelin LTX M/S
Miles on Tire Unknown (guessing 20-30k)
Date Used I forget
Road Use These tires were OK at first, but then I got a bad steering arm and the tires cupped within 500 miles and never smoothed out.
Snow/Ice Horrible, granted I had the locker and front LSD at the time, in a light snow fall the wheels lost ALL traction and threw me into someones mailbox bushes and nearly their truck. Replaced them later that week.
Offroad It felt like I could push my Montero in park through the brush easier than offroading with those tires. That's with a locked rear and LSD front.

Overall The experience I had with these tires I would never recommend these tires, or any Michelin tire to anyone.

I will comment on the other tires when I remember their exact model.

Scale 1-10 1=Very Poor, 10=Very good

Tire 31x10.5, 33x12.5, 35x12.5x15 Geolandar MT
Date Used 99 to 05
On Road (dry & wet) Dry - 9, Wet - 8.5
On Road (snow) 8
Dirt Trails 9
Rock 9.5
Overall Exceptional in heavy rain (directional tire, duh). Mediocre on ice - this improves SLIGHTLY with tire wear. Siping helps considerably. Tire compound stays soft at extremely low temps and does somewhat mitigate the lack of siping. Exceptional in deep snow, slush, packed snow both on and off road. Very sticky on both slick rock and sandy, crud covered, wet slick granite. Exceptional flotation in sand and snow. Phenomenal carcass flex when aired down. One of the major reasons traction is so high off road. These tires will generate a phenomenal contact patch. Thin (but very flexy) sidewalls compared to competitors. Stay out of mud bogs with sticks.:) Expect a life span of less than 18-20K if you're wheeling a lot. 90% street/highway - 25-35K miles. Reasonably even wear, minimal cupping. These tires REALLY need to be rotated on a regular basis. Mediocre to good in mud (depends on the type of mud) - tires self-clean very well. Quiet on the highway for an M/T down to the last few couple K of tire life.

Tire 35x12.5x15 Geolandar MT+
Date Used 05 to 10
On Road (dry & wet) Dry - 10, Wet - 9
On Road (snow) 8
Dirt Trails 9
Rock 10
Overall Exceptional in heavy rain. A little above mediocre on ice - this improves with tire wear. Siping helps considerably. Tire compound stays soft at extremely low temps and does somewhat mitigate the lack of siping. Exceptional in deep snow, slush, packed snow both on and off road. Extremely sticky on both slick rock and sandy, crud covered, wet slick granite. Exceptional flotation in sand and snow. Phenomenal carcass flex when aired down. One of the major reasons traction is so high off road. These tires will generate a phenomenal contact patch. Thin (but very flexy) sidewalls compared to competitors. Stay out of mud bogs with sticks.:) Expect a life span of less than 20-25K if you're wheeling a lot. 90% street/highway - 35-40K miles. Very even wear, minimal cupping in the last few K of tire life. These tires should be rotated and balanced on a regular basis. (every 3-4 months if you're doing 40K miles a year) Mediocre to good in mud (depends on the type of mud) - tires self-clean very well. Very quiet on the highway for an M/T down to the last few K of tire life.

Note: 1) Both of these SEEM to wear better on solid axle vehicles than IFS based on what I've seen with Mitsus, Toys and Jeeps. There are a lot of variables involved so I'm probably just imagining things.:) 2)Both the M/T and M/T+ 35x15 are sub $200-275 tires. IMHO, one of the few times you can get a lot more than you paid for. 3) I had problems popping beads with the M/T on AR aluminum rims. Tires didn't seem to seat on the bead area tight enough. No problems on steel or the stock Mitsu aluminum rims. 4) All Geolandar M/Ts are very light tires for their spec'd size. Flotation M/Ts are also significantly UNDERSIZED for their spec'd size.

Tire 31x10.5x15 BFG AT
Date Used 98 to 99
On Road (dry & wet) Dry - 9, Wet - 5
On Road (snow) 7
Dirt Trails 10
Rock 8
Overall Very poor in heavy rain on the road. Good in dry snow, gets increasingly worse the wetter the snow gets. Poor in deep snow. Good on ice and packed snow. Great dirt tire, but mediocre in loose gravel. Awesome on slick rock, but mediocre to poor on slick, dry, sandy granite. Good general purpose A/T. Even wear; about 45K mile lifespan. Totally worthless in any mud - not self-cleaning.

Yall need to add a category for Sand like at the beach or dunes. I like this thread. as a general disclaimer any tires over 33" are hard to get balance and keep balanced if primary use is on road is what I have been told by many tire shops.

Date Used 1st week of Feb, 2010 to present.
On Road (dry & wet) Dry - 9, Wet - 8
On Road (snow) not tried yet *
Dirt Trails 9.5
Rock 9
Overall *First, while I haven't driven on snow with them yet, they are specifically rated for snow use and have some decent siping and holes where one could thread in 150-200 studs if one wanted to.

That said, so far they have been great tires. At 15 lbs out on the Hassayampa river here, they handled both low and high speed passes in the river bottom on mixes of sand, mud, rock and gravel without a single slip up. On road they are as quiet as any AT, very smooth rolling around 30 lbs, and definitely look great. When I was cut off in some heavy rain on our rather oily roads, there was a brief instant where they felt a hair slow to respond but I would call that an exceptional case. I am looking forward to see how they do on sand in the next few weeks as I begin practicing for our fall trip across the dunes and desert of the Altar. I definitely like these tires a lot so far though, I think Goodyear got it right in trying to design a hybrid between an AT and an MT. If they can last a good long while (only aboout 1500 miles, but no real signs of wear yet), they will be my new favorite tire.

I have over 45,000 miles on mine and still have plenty of meat left. I rotate them often and have flipped them once.

The Geolandar has proven to be exceptional in most terrains with only a few minor limitations. The tread grips rocks and soft forest soil better than any other tire I've run.

I'll buy another set

I have 33x10.5x15 BFG MUD TERRAINs. I have About 40k on them in Florida driving. Still have good tread. I don't thing BFG makes this size any more. I liked them with the 1 1/2 wheel spacers on my truck. The plus was not as much turning weight with th 10.5 width. Great in sand/mud. And even in the little snow. Also have been good in rain.

Re: Tire Experiences Thread

Tire: 265/75/16 Goodyear Duratrac
Miles on Tires: about 5,000
Date Used: 2009 to present
Road Use: Very good in all conditions on pavement
Snow/Ice: Outstanding in all snow conditions (no experience on ice covered pavement with these)
Offroad: Excellent in all offroad conditions I've encountered. (I have yet to take them on any serious rock trails.)

Overall: I'm very pleased with this tire. They are quiet for the size and spacing of the lugs (even with the windows down). The performance in deep snow is great, don't need to chain up all four until I start pushing snow with my bash guard. Very good handling when making high-speed desert road runs. Too bad Goodyear doesn't make a D load in my size. I went with the E load and it's a bit stiff on the pavement, but so much better side wall protection than the C load when off pavement. The side wall flex when aired down is surprisingly good when the rig is laden for a backcountry trip.

Re: Tire Experiences Thread

Tire: Toyo Open Country A/T 285/75R16 8-ply, Date Used: November 2006-present
On Road (dry & wet): excellent on wet/dry.
On Road (snow): never need 4wd at icy intersection unless I'm in a hurry . extremely predictable on slick ice or snow!!
Dirt Trails: Very impress for a mild All-terrain tire when aired down, blew my mind actually!!
Rock: excellent on dry, wet gets a bit slippery but probably because they are Load range:D tires with a hard compound
Overall: 9.5 out of 10, I absolutely love these tires.

I used to run Yokohama Geolandar A/T's on my old truck and I actually liked them a lot better but they are discontinued sadly, have been replaced with the Geolandar AT/S which is nowhere near as good IMHO.

Tire 33 12.50 15
Date Used Winter 2011
On Road (dry & wet) Fairly quiet for a mud terrain tire on dry pavement. Good grip on ice and snow, boringly so. Has worked well in slush but standing water the tire wants to hydroplane. Makes truck feel way more stable than with stock sized tires.
Dirt Trails Excellent traction on hard packed dirt. Clog up easily in clay based mud. Similar to an all terrain, but clear easily with spinning.
Rock I've only used on hard pack dirt climbs with similar characteristics to being on rocks, at 30psi. Climbed easily.

Tire Brand & Model would be good.

Tire 38.5x15x15 Interco TSL Super Swamper Boggers
Date Used Aug 2010-present, 3000 miles
On Road (dry & wet) Dry was good, flat spots if the truck sits for a while because they are bias-ply. Wet, they are fair. Stay away from puddles and don't use a lot of throttle.
On Road (snow) N/A, very little siping on the tires though
Dirt Trails Great! Side hilling not so great.
Mud Best tire possible that is DOT legal! Clean out at low speeds in Florida hard pan mud.
Rock N/A

These tires are big, loud, and beefy. 6-ply sidewalls, almost 1" deep tread, big lugs, heavy. I don't drive a lot so a tire that might last 15k miles at the most works for me.
