lifting the front end of a mighty max

I have a 87 d50 but figured i would post it here as it is just a might max with different emblems. I can lift the rear end easy but can't figure out how to do the front without axles swap and all that. just looking for a way to get 2 or 3 inches in the front

Jack up the front end put it on jackstand, take out your torsion bars misalign the marks 2 teeth and crank em back up its called reindexing you torsion bars

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

You could try reindexing your torsion bar keys, but I think it might put too much stress on the torsion bars. Other than that, it's a solid axle swap

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

I would LOVE to do an axle swap but that is way beyond my skill level...I am just trying to get about 3 inchs of lift cause it sets a bit lower than most trucks...that and no skid plate on my tank but i am working on that

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

Red, if you do a bodylift it isnt that hard to do a tank lift. Pop the bed off and have a saw and welder acouple pieces of pipe. I did it to my 91 w/ a 3in BL and gave the tank about a 3in lift to were it sits almost even w/ the top of the frame.

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

No, only problem Ive ever ran into is you have to take a hammer to the trans tunnel to get the 5spd to get all gears

I think I may be able to handle that mod :)...what size tires where you able to go with

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

I run a 32 right now w/ plenty of fender gap after a 3in BL and torsion crank. I bet a 35 could run in there pretty easy w/ lil to no rubbing. But this is in a V6 powered rig lots better then the 2.6. Once I regear to 4.625s Ill be trying pretty hard to get a set of 35s.

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

I could fit 32s on it now with the bars cranked up but they may rub a bit in a bind. I would just like to get some 33 10.50s on it. I just want a few more inches of frame clearance.

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

Bringing this thread back up with some additional questions and opinions. I don't care for body lifts...my opinion. I want to run 33's on my new MM, and need to know a way around a body lift. With our long Board experience lifting Gen I Monteros, I think I could use Gen II Montero UCAs, crank the torsion bars, add the Toyota rear shackles, and be around my desired lift target.

Since it has been determined that my truck has 3.909 gears, I'm also planning the swap to a V6 Gen I Montero front axle with the 4.625 gears, stick shift front CVs, whatever length drive axle I'll need, and replace the rear dropout with another from an 87 Raider I parted some time ago.

Any corroboration would be wonderful.

Thanks,
Russell

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

I do remember gen2 UCA's being the quicky-lift for a MM up front, can't remember the specifics though.

Oh, and off-topic, but care to see if the rear axle disc brake backers off a monty will bolt to the MM axle? You're the first person I know with monty parts and max parts in the same place, who may have time to do it. Would be sweet to be able to get rid of the drums and use OEM bolt-on parts!

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

I remember on the gen1 MM, the a arms were not the same between monty and MM 4wd. Don't know if that's true on the gen2 MM or not, and thus not sure the Gen2 upper a arm will fit.
The wheel wells on the MM are not as large as on the Monty, either, especially on the front, so a body lift may still be necessary, at least on the cab. I got 31's to fit on the 85 D50 by some gentle persuasion on the sheet metal with a 2x4 pry bar and some bumper end cap trimming and a minor tbar crank.

Re: lifting the front end of a mighty max

Seems like I'll be visiting some yards to check on the UCAs, then. If I can find a small service body (uhmm!), I guess I'd consider lifting the cab. Molly (Ray's old Blue) will be donating the sliders to Pearl (my MM, as in Black Pearl...), and low gears are definitely the order of the day. With the 31s and 3.909s, the cruise rpm is too low for my preference at about 2700rpm @ 65mph. Any little grade and the boost goes up quickly trying to keep speed. AND, I have a Starion LSD, so which front axle does this go in? I presume the 4-cyl, hmm.
