Looking for some pics of a GenII manual trans. In car and transfer case pics if you have them. Pic of the transfer case-transmission mounting flange would be nice. Also Gen II front diff mounting points. Needing for some research. Can't find any Montero's in my area let alone a Gen II 5-speed. Thanks Kane |

Isn't Stony's a 5spd? |

Is there anything specifically that pictures would tell you? The Gen2 manual trans looks just like the Gen1. It has a removable aluminum bellhousing. The gear case is cast iron, and the tailhousing is aluminum. That said, I'm not really sure what changed between the Gen1 and Gen2 six cylinder manuals. You might also consider looking for a Montero Sport. They seemed to be a little more common. I have the chassis of one.

Quote: I know on the automatics the xfer shifter is on the drivers side whereas on the Gen I it's on the passenger. If the Gen II 5-speed xfer shifter is still on the passenger and trans shifter is on the driver it may allow me to use a different, more robust trans in my shorty. Pending bolt pattern similarities and spline counts. |

On the Sports the tranny shifter is on the left and the t-case is on the right. I'm sure with minimal work you could get the t-case figured out and functional. What about the bellhousing? It is different between the V6 and 4cylinder. You have a 4cyl, correct? |

My '92 is a manual, and I think Monty has two GenII manual tranny rigs. If no one has any pics already taken of what you want, I'll crawl under mine and take some for you. |

Quote: I won't be using a Mitsu transmission. Looking at a Mazda R series from a B2600 and it has transmission shifter on the passenger and transfer case on the driver. Id use Mazda transfer case but it has a passenger side drop but it does have the shifters in the transfer case just like the Mitsu unit. Unlike the Mitsu unit, there is a factory adapter between the transfer case and transmission sooo if Mitsu ever made a case with the shifters in the right orientation it would mean we are an adapter away from a bullet proof trans for the 4cyl guys, again pending spline counts. Here's a link to the Mazda unit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350075175114&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=022 Kane |

The Mazda R box has removable selector forks that are different for each of its applications. With the Mitsus shift rod coming forward top and center from the transfer it might not be hard to select the fingers and forks that will mate the two. I just installed a Mazda pickup tail housing on a RX7 twin turbo gearbox. Definitely had to swap a few parts but they interchange fine. This now bolts up to the back of a 6G7x engine and fits in a car chassis. |

Gee, I have a couple of pics, little ones they are. I should be able to dig up some transfer case pics. Might be a day or two. |

Whoa, whoa, whoa, aren't those two different t-cases? The first looks like an active trac and the second looks just like the Sport t-case that I made into a doubler. ![]() Also, those tranny pics look just like the V5MT1 tranny I have (I'm not so sure about the bellhousing). That's supposed to be the Mazda transmission, right? |

My pics are all Mitsu stuff, The trans being a V5MT1, and if I am correct is a Super Select/ Activetrac transfer. Might just be a part time transfer. If I crawled under my Mighty Max and looked at the rear of the transfer I would know. Nathan can answer since he has hands on with these. The two transfers I show, both having different front mating but should be full time transfers. The rounder mating being a manual application but the other one has a seal where the shift rod goes rather than a plug as in an automatic app. The trans that 4EPajero is showing is the later alloy case V5M31-5 that never came to the states. His is a diesel version but a V6 bellhousing is available too. I want one. |

Those are great guys, thanks heaps. Here is some more details on the two from a freind. http://www.b2600turbo.com/b2600b2600i_transmissions.htm I may end up buying some gaskets to make a better comparison. I found a b2600 trans fairly local for 300. If I can scrape up some change I may go get it. On another note, went after another 86 trans only to find it gone and missed out last week on a whole Raider by about three hours. Again a non runner purchased for the trans. I did score a set of Aisin hubs for 7 dollars though. Kane |

Quote: From the right side I would say that is a regular part-time case, BUT... The left side looks different. Haven't seen one like that before. The part-time cases have a large gusset web that runs from the side of the case out to the front output. Your case is much larger on that side and as a result the gusset web is much smaller. Here's a photo of the left side of my doubler case: Remember that I cut off the front output housing. Notice how the case is much smaller? Just below and forward of the fill plug is the web I speak of. Notice how it is much larger than your case: Also, I think your smoking gun might be the number of switches mounted on the case. The part-time case only has about two or three. The active-trac cases have five or six. I don't remember the exact number for sure. Where did you find this case? Was it from the US? I also would like to mention (in case Kane would be interested) that the configuration of the shifters could most likely be changed. While poking around inside these t-cases, I've notice that the cases are built to allow for the shifers to be swapped from one side to another. To prove my point, check out 4EPajero's pic: To do so would most likely involve sourcing a few select parts from overseas. |

The pics I have are of new transfer cases. I look at the rear behind the chain, they have the larger section for the center diff there. The cases are machined to allow the shifter to be on either side. I would expect the forks to be "handed", left or right. In some cases autos and manuals have the transfer selector on opposite sides. |

I'm just tuning in on this thread. I'm trying to figure out what I'm looking at. This aluminium alloy case transmisson out of a gen 2 in R.S.A.,,,a V5MT-5,,,,I haven't seen one personally but isn't this the transmission that the U.S.A. '97 3.0 24 valve Montero sport uses?????????????????????????? |

this is what i had in mind what kind of transmission is this and what is needed to bolt it on seems to have middle plate |

This is a 1993-5 RX7TT transmission with a B2600 tailhousing for clearance reasons in my chassis. I am using a 3/8 alloy plate adapter to mate it to the engine. I have also had a Starion gearbox behind the engine but was running into clearance issues with the starter to the steering linkage. The RX7 trans cures that. Are you going to run a turbo or NA engine? |

Good that it is a light car because that is not enough gearbox for a healthy turbo engine. We are a bit off topic here, come over to http://classiccolt.forumcircle.com/index.php where we are on topic with this. |

[serious_hijack] Canoes...? For rivers your way, or other discussions? I love to canoe, but don't get out enough. Built a stripper a few years ago from 60 year old cedar boards I reclaimed from the roof of my garage. ![]() What are the canoe forums? [/serious_hijack] |

Yup we are a bit from topic but you can see in my avitar there is a stack of boats on my SR. Those boards were seasoned quite well, I expect they had a few stained spots that you had to work around as you ripped them. I intend to build a 16' solo stripper in the next year or so. I have been through many designs drawn up in Delftship but with the 50 or so hulls I have paddled in the past year I found one sea kayak that handles the way I want my bout. Now I need to get in touch with the designer in Canada and see if I can get lines to the boat. I have been getting a bit of paddling in, I expect to break 200 miles paddled this season this weekend. I am active at both, http://www.myccr.com and http://adkforum.com Mostly in tech threads. I lurk in a few other forums that cover boat building more. I expect if we moved to the Off topic chat there would be a few interested in this. Cheers, Charlie When hiking in the woods its wise to wear little bells so as not to startle bears and it is wise to carry pepper spray. Also you should know the difference between black and grizzly bear scat. Black bear scat has berries and fur. Grizzly scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray. |
