really bad gas mileage!!!!

i just got done rebuilding my 86 4runner it has a 22re in it and today i drove it. it had a half tank of gas in it i drove probly about 80 miles and now it is down to empty once again. i think it might be a problem with the air fuel mixture but i am not sure. and if that is the problem i dont know how to remedy it. if u have any ideas please let me know thanks

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

Check to make sure you don't have any leaks in the fuel tank/fuel lines. Also, could your gas gauge just be giving you a bad reading? It's best to start of with simple things, mostly since I'm a carbie and I don't know much about EFI

A dirty air filter will hurt your fuel mileage also.

Was this something that happened suddenly or over time?

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

I only get 220 km when I am driving off road, and 270 km when I don't. That does sound about right, doesn't it? Or do I am something wrong too????

Define "just got done rebuilding...." Does that mean the engine, the entire truck? Missing information here.

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

How old is the o2 sensor? A defective one will cause the motor to run a richer mixture, therefore, dumping more fuel into the engine.

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

welcome to the 300 club

mine also is in the same boat .. I use to get 400 per tank , untill I burnt a valve . I ended up driving it for quite awhile before repairing , but when I finally did (rebuilt complete engine )

I have replaced everything , including new o2 sensor , throtle body, rebuilt injectors , temp sensors .. actually , its easier to say what I havent replaced ..

computer
air flow meter

i'm on stock size tires , with only a canopy .

I just did a new exhaust as well , and now my tail pipe is black , and also i'm getting some back firing when coasting down hill .. It , is absolutly running rich , and i cant figure it out

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

incorrect timing will also decrease mileage

I didnt think fuel perssure was an issue ??? ( I could be wrong) but that is what the return line is for ? ..
thinking it could be a "leak down" proplem .. I also replace the cold start injector .

timing is right on .

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

What about the TPS adjustment then followed by the timing. This was my problem when running rich. Also caused my cat to plug up.

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

high pressure can result in a rich mixture when running in open-loop mode

I guess thats my next step .

I dont remember , but it was an aftermarket NOT oe ..

I did replace it with a couple of "cleaned" OE sensors I had on my shelf , and there was no change . It is the single wire O2.

Low fuel pressure will result in a poor spray at the injectors thus also resulting in a rich condition.

I would verify fuel pressure...

Re: really bad gas mileage!!!!

Is your rebuild stock or did you change things in the engine?
