bought a few Trekkers a while back .. and now have started my own . this one is going to be a "some what" stock restoration .. but with a few "extras" . so here's where I'm starting . ![]() don't mind the dust .. it's been sitting inside my shop for a while now . there is one small rust hole on The right side .. front spring hanger , inside box steel .. you can see it in the pic .. it's so minor , I'm just going to weld in a patch . so a little work today ... got onto the frame repair . got the little plates/patches welded in .. It really wasnt that bad at all , the main / worse dammage was from me hitting with a hammer it trying to find the rust .. I really didnt see any point in doing "fish plates" .. as there (in my opinion) was NO structural strength loss . Other side is perfect . ![]() and done .. ![]() also started "prepping" the frame for the POR-15 treatment. ![]()
As with all of your builds, lookin' good This one gettin' a 7mgte too?
no 22r + I hope . :) just workin' on the deal . . |
gosh darnit CJ you're stealin my ideas! (blown 22r in a trekker) but atleast youre bringing them to reality ![]() oh and you can thank me for youre next order of 89-95 bedsides to london you dont have the flared ones yet eh?
well, not a "done deal" yet .... guy wants to trade so , well see . can't let him know I want it to bad :) Trekker is for sale ! .. as any piece is !!! , for the right price .. so it could be yours :) but I think I'll drive this one first :) Thank YOU for your references .. I totally apprecieate them . " word of mouth " is my only advertizing . Flared/hi-clearance are in the works . . |
so got the top side done (cleaned) , flipped it over and started on the bottom side . ![]() also ordered the POR15 . . |
damn, was that the most rust-free frame you could find lol? are you going to por-15 the inside somehow? if not i would think it would just rust from the inside out. |
it's really not that bad , it actually hasnt been used in 10 years , but it was sitting outside (under cover) , so it has surface rust .. lots of factory black , in many spots .. it looks way worse in the pics , then in real life .. Trust me , It's the BEST frame I have seen in a lot of Years , Very solid . I have a pressure pot , with a flexable hose and a 360* spinning v notch nozzle .. works awesome , so YES .. inside will be done as well as outside . |
I've debated spraying the inside of the frame with oil. I'd have to watch the welding.

Might as well get it sand blasted. There are ag shops that have people doing large equipment all the time. Get the whole thing blasted, then you can see if "surface" rust is really surface. Not that expensive, especially with the results you will get. Make a decision based on results. If all is fine a quick pickling will go a long way. Best primer step for iron / steel is to hit is with phosphoric acid. The result is black iron phosphate which is a dandy anti rust layer and makes a perfect paint surface. Check it out on wikipedia. There are several ways of doing the pickling, including spraying with diluted phosphoric, using "navy jelly" or some variant of that. After the metal turns gray / black, a quick wash with water will get rid of the acid and away you go. So, blast, pickle, wash and paint.... |
Quote:Quote: you have mail :) Quote: I dont think I need to go that far .. but thanks for the info .. LAST one I did .. I did all that (some of you may remember this build) but .. POR 15 does NOT need this process . The rust you see in the pics really is only surface .. the reason for the hole (in my opinion) was because the gas tank was left in , and mud was packed in there , and it stayed wet .. thats the side that was on the bottom . ANYWAY .. I'm totally comfortable doing as POR15 recomends .. loosen the scales , de-grease , use the metal prep .. and paint on the POR 15 This one is now 5 years old .. and still going . |
well a little progress to post .. parts truck is now in pieces . ![]() long box frame has been sold , so it's time to "strip er' down " ... got the engine out , and cab hacked to pieces .. box had been removed previously , and I had cut a hole in the back of the cab for the "long box Trekker" I built ... Now that that project is all done (for me anyway) It was time to get to work on my project . I sold the long box frame .. and I need alot of the pieces for my trekker .. so time to strip it . lots of work yesterday , cut the roof off , and rockers , and cab corners .. I'm going to make some replacements :) so i wanted to keep them . got the engine bay mostly stripped , and engine out . ![]() and here is where I started this morning .. ![]() and finally the cab off .. ![]() frame stripped .. ![]() ![]() and diffs ready to build . ![]() and finally my front clip .
so work on the front diff is finished .. ![]() axle rebuild is all done .. and new "vented " rotors . ![]() you can see the whole thing here http://toyotatrekker.proboards107.com/ . |
Wow you can eat off that backing plate. I cant wait till i have time to start working on my truck again! *damn college* |
Thanks Bro ... got some goodies delivered today :) ![]() ![]() and put away for the moment .. ![]() ![]() . |
so I flipped the frame over late today , and got started on the "mock up" installed the front springs ![]() . |
so lookey what I did today :) stuffed the rear springs and diff back on .. didnt get it por-15'd yet .. but that'll come later ... and yes , those are blocks .. for now . ![]() I needed my jack stands , so I made some little wood blocks .. for everything to sit on .. I guess I did pretty good on them , kuz , it's perfectly level ![]() moved the front diff over , and got it mounted as well .. ![]() same thing .. I still need to "detail" but for now , I have other stuff to do . grabbed my "cherry picker" .. and decided to see just how close the engine is to fitting on the stock mounts ... ![]() it sorta fits , but new motor mountd are definatly called for .. the right side actually "sortta fit" ... I was able to get one bolt in , and over 1/2 the hole is showing on the second bolt .. ![]() I'm going to "re-do " both sides . it's comming :) ![]() . |
ok .. so its not going to be as "easy" as I first thought ..original mounts wont work ... got the front all degreased , and cleaned and stripped ![]() got the engine in , and leveled .. and figured this is where I wanted it . I left some room between the alt , and the frame .. and also I was hoping to use the original motor mounts . ![]() got the front clip on ...... ![]() ![]() NO way .. I cant have it sitting this high .. it's about 1' above the original hood line .. so , time to start stripping the motor a bit , so I can get it down a bit .. I also think it's inevetable , I am going to have to use a body lift .. . |
Body lift? I'm sure a man with such resources can make a nice hoodscooped fiberglass hood to hide the motor
Quote: K .. hood is inevidable .. but !! maybe not so much . |
ok .. so took a " step back" today , and had a look at "things" remove a bunch of "extra accessories" I wont be using .. ![]() I went over to a buddies place , and had a look at his /83 .. and did some measuring (I dont have a complete truck) I found basically the engines are the same length , but the 3.4 is wider , and taller . so I did some more "mocking up" and I think I have it now .. :) so with the crossover on the passenger side .. it actually hits the frame .. it also would interfere with the slave cylinder , and clutch fork , so It MUST be modified . ![]() using the crossover pipe means , I cant use a rad . ORS wants $370.00 + a core charge on the flanges for a crossover pipe .. Downey wants $395.00 for a set of chrome headers . I have a feeling I'm going with the Downey headers . ?? ok ... so .. now with the crossover removed and the a/c compresser .. I can now get the engine where it should be , or where I want it . >>> the stick indicates the firewall <<< ![]() >>> the stick indicates the hood line <<< ![]() and finally .... fan and rad .. :) ![]() I still have a bit of room at the back , so I will move it back a little further .. + I know a guy at a fiberglass shop ( ) that can build a custom hood .. and NO BODY LIFT REQUIRED .I think I will be using the original upper mounts , and build some lowers .. not sure on the isolator yet .. ![]() also at this height .. there seems to be lots of clearance on the oil pan .. I'm using the stock "push/pull steering" .. but if I were to go to crossover , I would need to change out the oil pan for sure .. ![]() back to work ! |
so .... wee progress . cut a couple of pieces off .. ![]() ![]() also the brake line mounts . ![]() ready to go ... :) . so started working on the motor mounts . after weeks of shopping , and 1/2 as$ looking around , I finally found the mounts I want .. ![]() They are just perfect ... and exactly what i have been looking for . They fit the original mounts .. ![]() and "hang" exactly where I want . I started on the frame side mounts , but had an issue with the press . ... so I had to stop here . What I have , are the 20r,22r& re engine mounts ................... ![]() I cut them to fit the angle of the frame , and the angle of the mounts ... ( paper cut-outs & tape) ![]() I'm making a frame bridal/bridge now and got them all cut out .. and ---- no press ... so had to stop there . untill I can fix it .... . |
so progress ..... but is really any one interested ??? |

ok so ... update then :) heres what I got so far .. I intend to add some gussets when I remove the engine to do the frame , but here's the "jist" of it . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() also got a little delivery today .. :) My NEW rad .. turbo 3row . ![]() Fan is also ordered .. Maradyne 16" excellent flow .. should work great . ![]() ![]() also got to work on the drive shafts .. started with the front ... hung the original 95 shaft , and no way , to long + the CV would not bend enough . So I decided to compare . angles are WAY different and rather then shortening the 95 shaft , i'll use the earlier The 83 shaft . you can clearly see the differance . (not sure on the 84-88 shaft , dont have one) ![]() so now to line things up . front flange works (of course , diff side) but the rear (transfer side) has the 10MM studs .. with just a few measurements , I found you could knock out the flange studs . and using the 79-83 8MM drive shaft bolts , it'll line up . I was worried about the differance in the 10mm original , and the 8mm 79-83 .. but if you look at the flange/flange , there should be no movement . ![]() so .. now FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ON . :) , I may have to lengthen , not sure yet .. but it's on :) ![]() rear was not so difficult .. just had to drill the flange . set it up , and drilled . ![]() finished ![]() and installed . ![]() so NOW I can build my crossmember . . |
started on the crossmember .. started with cutting off the original mounts
also got some frame plates cut , and "placed " .
also got the "mounts" completed ..
then made a "trace" of the original mount holes , and cut the lower crossmember
BUT WAIT ... "says to self" ---- "self" .. better lay the header pipe in place to make sure everything will fit .
so I layed the "header" pipe where I thought it should be , had to watch out for the shackle clearance and such , and sure enough , it would have hit the crossmember .. so I think I have the crossmember figured now , but I figured I might as well get the crossover done , and in place first . heres the pic of the cat , and the shackle clearance ... just for referance .
so I chopped up the old crossover ..
some guys have "re-worked" the old pipes , and expansion joint , I decided to go all new . cleaned up all the old flanges , and put them in place ..
made a "template" of the first pipe , and ran of to get it bent . :) trimmed it up , and cut it to fit ..
the stick indicates the firewall pipe #2
and pipe # 3
a little triming (a LOT of grinding) and a tack here and there , and finally I can weld . I talked to the muffler shop , and the pipe bender guy suggested staying with the original Toyota flex joint , as they are WAYYY better then the aftermarket ones .. so I cut it out , and re used it . starting to weld ....
and fully welded ..
part of the reason for this excersize , was I really wanted to have the original heat shield back on .. and TA, DA ..
and some clearance pics ..
and water pipe clearance .
total price ... $30.00 + consumables , and my time . now I can finish the crossmember . :) |
so back onto the crossmember . tranny mount is there , and now time for the frame attachment . ![]() cut some pieces , and cut and ground and bend .. and heres what I got . ![]() ![]() ![]() welding ![]() ![]() LONG shot ... ![]() lots of fitting and drilling cutting and fitting cut some frame braces .. ![]() boxed in the mount ![]() and got er' ready to drop out .. long shot ![]() added the protector plate , and strengtheners .. ![]() clearance .. ![]() and VIOLA .. DONE . next on the slate .. and just arrived today ![]() :) |

Just checking in... glad to see you are not using the Downey headers after all. Mine has the ORS crossover, and was the prototype for his production unit (mine was version 1, then version 2. Version 2 is a keeper). It is worth it, very labor intensive and well made. But it looks like you have the equivalent. The 3.4 fit in my engine bay with the drivetrain 3" forward, with the stock hood, 1" body mount, and 2mm of clearance. I elected to put in a scoop mostly for bling. Prior to the BL I ran a ventilated hood (hole ) ). The firewall clearance was TIGHT until the BL. Much easier to fiddle with things now.
CHANGE THAT OIL PAN. You want a T100 2WD pan. Move the dipstick. I used a FRORF crossmember, clean and strong, but not compatible with the chain tcase of course. I am running an R151 but frankly I'd run the stock R150 now with a V6 plate to get the Marlin Crawlers adapted. The R151 is bulletproof, but doesn't shift as nice. Lookin' GOOD. [edit] oh, and POR15 Metal Prep is basically the same pickling mentioned, just more expensive. It works. |
thanks guys .. I really wanted the heat shield on the crossover .. as far as I can see .. so far i'm the only one whom has acomplished this ? :) on ward and up ward .. |
I like your cross member. I have a similar idea with the trany mount. |
thanks ... |
ok .. so a wee bit of work in the last couple of days .. got the front calipers in and ohhh!! boy .. they need some work . heres what I started with .. ![]() got em' all "blasted" and cleaned ![]() and then "zinc 'ed " , ![]() now ready for some Caliper paint , and NEW Toyota Pads ... I think I wanna fit the rims first .. so well see . also started again on the rear diff .. got it out and started pullin' axles to get on the rear discs .. ![]() ![]() and ordered parts ..... :) |
so continueing on with the rear , I cut off all the brackets I dont want to use ![]() and started to "test fit " the rear calipers and brackets ... ![]() also making some new brakeline brackets ![]() welded the nuts ![]() and got them ready to weld on . ![]() ![]() also got the new fan in today , so .. got the front lower rad support cut out , and fan mounted ![]() test fit the grill ![]() and made a NEW lower support .. ![]() I still have to make the center support , and finish welding , but this will hold it together for now . :) |
so continueing on .... on the calipers .. a little detail . some caliper paint . ![]() and ready for new pads . ![]() also .. put on the new tie rod ends .. ![]() and got it all aligned , and "temporaly" installed ![]() . |
Dang Cory, I need sunglasses to look at those calipers! Lookin good, keep 'em coming. What calipers are you gonna use on the rear axle? |
:) thanks .. rears are Caddy calipers with the emerg. leavers .. I'm just fuguring the cable , and mounts out for that , then I will POR the rear axle , and put the calipers in the same caliper paint . rear discs are being "cut" right now , and I have ordered the front toyota pads , and rear bearings .. so i'm just waiting for those now . |

Quote: Hi steer can be done w/ less than 3" of lift as long as the drag link is positioned right relative to the frame and the tie-rod relative to the oil pan... and bump stops are set appropriately. I've owned one. :) |

C'mon guys. If this was my rig, I sure as h-ll wouldn't be taking through boulder fields. Nothing more than fire service roads thru the woods. Don't need no hi-steer for that, or dual cases, or exo.... see where I'm coming from?? |
Quote: Agreed. I look at cross-over steering, in cases like this, an option for making the steering "feel" and "perform" better (quoted for a reason). |
Quote: We are not talking rock buggy here. High steer (or at least a proper crossover steer) is simply superior in all applications. Dual cases and exo were not mentioned. Do you see where I'm coming from? On IFS/SAS, true, you need lift to do high steer. Not so much on an SA truck. |
The high steer kits are stronger, reduce bump steer, and offer better response. |
sorry for the delay in my reply ... Had problems logging in . NO hi steer . I dont need it . With all NEW components steering will be just fine , + it saves me having to replace the oil pan , and relocate the dipstick . |
progress .. i'm waiting for the bearings I ordered , and the discs to be turned ... but I did get the backing plates finally pressed off . so started with the backing plates , and started to strip off the brakes , and un-necessary stuff for the swap .
knocked out the studs that hold in the bearing retainer ..
and knocked off the backing plate ..
and got them all cleaned up ready for the POR treatment .
. so finally got my rotors back .. just for referance , rotors are for the /80's chev 6bolt light duty 1" thick .. (the heavy duty 1.3" thick wont work with the calipers ). center hole has to be "bored" out to fit the toyota axle ..
so with that the new bearings
are "poped" into the bearing retainers
outer seal installed
and then pressed on to the axle .
axles are stuffed in , and rotors are installed .. calipers , and test fit of the pads .
and done ..
and back under the truck .
now to figure the emerg. cables .. (calipers are on the wrong sides .. I have since corrected) . |
I see you like to use the zinc coat spray paint. Does that stuff hold up well to our northern winters? |
it does ... it works very well . my winch bar on me DD came off of my /80 (bought NEW from warn industries in /80) ![]() in the mid /90's when I sold the truck , I kept the winch and bar .. by that time it was really starting to rust .. so I sand blasted and zinc'd .. and painted .. this is the same bar not even repainted .. but a new winch here in 2007 . top bar is rusting from the inside out , but other then that .. it still looks great . this is the main reason I use it . |
What led you to want to use blocks of that height? |
space .. I need the space for the rear disc and emerg. leavers . |
so tacke'd up my hoops today .. plumb bobbed , and leveled ![]() ![]() also put the steering box in place .. to check clearances .. ![]() connected up the drag link , and got it adjusted .. ![]() all so I decided to brace the front hoops .. I have heard in some situations , they will tear right off the frame .. and I didnt want that .. so .. I'm also making some gussets , and will post em' up when i'm done . ![]() thats about it . :) |
Looks really good but I'm thinking you may regret the blocks especially with the 3.4. Why not do a Chevy swap using 1" or 2" lift springs? That way you could have a good ride and do away with the blocks. The way your building this truck its no problem to do it now rather then later. |
the blocks provide space for the emergency cables , and access to the caliper bolts , and adjustments .. as mentioned .. in this case , they are an asset another build with out blocks to close for my comfort , and there is NO room to adjust . to do any caliper "work" the axle must be dropped .. not smart in my books .. on a personal note: I've ran blocks for 12 years in my 80 (pic'd above) .. 36" swampers , ARB's and 5:29's and kicker's .. I never had 1 issue .. not 1 . I will run them again . . |
Maybe you already indicated is, but where did you get your rear caliper brackets? -- Matt |
there Sky's brackets . |
Quote: Granted, you need the room. Why not get the lift you need using springs/shackles of the proper lift? The rest of your rebuild/swap is of such high quality, it seems a shame not to. |

With a traction bar(s) blocks are just fine in the rear. Tire size also plays a big role. Are those Marlin Crawler shock hoops? If so short or tall and do they require cutting? |
Quote:Quote: it's not the "lift " thats the issue .. it's the space beside and under the spring . The block allows access to the caliper bolts , and emerg. leaver , without having to remove the u-bolts , and seperate the spring and axle .. with this set up (block) I can easly access ALL the bolts , and adjustment with NO problem .. just imagine a rear seal leaking .. and having to drop out the whole rear end to access , sound like a good plan ?? I dont think so . Quote: I am going with a "traction shock" like Rancho use to supply , not a traction bar .. I have found the shock to be much less harsh and allow just a little better "ride" .. I'm building my own , because they're no longer avaliable . tires i'm going to run are either 33 x 12.50's or 35's x 12.50's shock hoops are TG .. 12 " and supose to be NON cut .. they seem tall , and hit the inners .. but I dont have the cab on yet , so I dont actually know yet . |
so " buttened " up some loose ends today .. cut 4 gussets for the front hoops , here's 1 ![]() and welded ![]() also , wanted to finish up the new crossmember .. so I cut some pieces , and got er' all finished up .. I just need to do a center suport now . ![]() also .. brake lines .. got the new steel lines on , and stainless lines in place , and just tacked the line supports .. ![]() . |
so trying to figure out the emergency cable and brake lines .. first working on the emerg. cable . My final outcome .. is to have the stock cable hook up to a short extension .. heres the direction i'm going ... I first found some 3/16 cable .. and fittings and such ![]() with an idea in mind , I found a bolt to cut for cable retainers . ![]() I drilled out the center of the bolt , and then cut it in to pieces ... ![]() then " V " grooved to top , an slid the cable up threw the center .. and welded ![]() and "loosly" hooked up ! ![]() I checked with the GM dealer today also on the price of the return springs $50 bone each , and the secondary spring leavers .. only avaliable with the calipers .. yeah right :P so I decided to make my own .. made a template for the bracket , and started cutting and drilling .... ![]() and finally an install pic .. loose ![]() and clamped ![]() so far so good .. :) |
Interesting limitation to Sky's brackets. You've overcome them, but for many they would not be optimal. |
no .. rear discs arn't for everyone .. EXPENCIVE to make work propperly (if you can fab on your own) |
a little worried the wheels wouldn't fit (REM sleep causes this) so this morning I fit on my "shop tires" 8" wheels and 31's .. and clearances look good . ;D ![]() ![]() also .. got some of the rear brake lines hung .. but am having a problem finding the "banjo" style fittings for my calipers .. help is appreceated !!! ![]() . |
so I found the right lines !!!! First I opened everything up .. and had a look . ![]() I realized my previous "hanging " of the rear line was no good , so I started with moving the rear upper hanger . ![]() ![]() welded , and re-bent the line .. I also added some posts for the line to bolt to ... ![]() so with the line now loosly fit .. ![]() I wanted to make the brackets fit my supports .. so I removed the crimping from the new lines , and started cutting and forming and fitting ![]() and now a perfect fit .. and re-crimped back onto the lines ... ![]() here in BC .. brake lines also must be supported with a bracket , and "C" clip .. so I made some brackets .. ![]() welded and "C" clipped ![]() and used the "domestic ends , and a small piece of line with the original ends on it .. double flared the ends , and done . ![]() . |
small project today .. that now I can check off the list .. DONE! Track bar was a little to short because of the lift , so I had to correct .. ![]() Cut the main rod out , and also cut a new main bar .. notice the diameter differance . ![]() all welded .. and you must be carefull to NOT burn the bushing .. ![]() and installed .. ![]() . |

ok .. so I know you guys arnt "keen" on the blocks .. I ran them in my "white knight" for 12 years .. 36" swampers , ARB's front and rear , and 5:29's .. wayyyyy back in the early years .. so for this build , I'm usin em' . anyway .. blocks work for space for the new rear calipers , and emergancy cables . so to make the blocks work .. as on my old rig .. I built some "kicker shocks" there not as harch as a traction bar .. and still allow some movement .. but very limited , and "absorbed" I first I cut out some brackets ![]() welded them to the frame , with the MOCK-UP shocks in place ![]() then I took the original u-bolt holder , and made some more brackets .. welded , and added some bump stops .. ![]() and now I have a correction for the blocks , and " 0 " loss of clearance . ![]() . |

Just wondering why you put the torque rod back in? I'm putting a lift in my 81 and same thing too short go figure! I've noticed most lifted toyota's dont have it installed. There was a adjustable one on ebay for over $100. but why waste a bill or hasle with it when I see so many without one installed. I also noticed were mine mounts to the frame there's some cracks have you seen this before? I'm new to the toyota (ex chevy guy)and you seem to know your way around one. Good looking truck thanks for sharing your project.
I'd replace the torque rod. I talked to a guy around town with a lifted '83 with 35s. He slammed on the brakes at 70 and the front axle wrapped so bad that the springs bent and he rubbed against a conrete divider. |
torque rod elimenates spring wrap on the front , VERY improtant .. you dont want to eliminate this on a "daily driver" at slow speeds , offroad, rock crawler it's not necessary , due to articulation restrictions .. but on any insured driver , it is absolutly imperative you keep it . removing it will affect braking , steering .. and a raft of other necessary functions . fix it , and keep it . . |
Thanks for such a fast reply I 'll be welding soon!Good bye heavy chevy's This little toyota's gona be helli fun!

I wanted to finish up the rear bump stops .. so I unbolted the originals and removed ![]() ![]() made some new "low profile" .. and installed ![]() ![]() . |
started a bit of work on the rear emergency cable . started with cleaning up some of the brackets , and making new ones .. ![]() ![]() the main "swivel" mount was tapped . leveled and welded . ![]() ![]() I picked up some 90* 's off the front cable , (on the firewall) 79-89toys from White Valley Collision ![]() got them all cleaned up .. ![]() I went to incert the cable .. for a test fit .. and found they wouldnt work .. the inner wheel was plastic , as well as not the right fit for the cable ... I didnt think the plastic was strong enough either .. ![]() so I lagthed some new wheels .. ![]() and now cable fits perfect .. ![]() ![]() made the new mount brackets .. ![]() braced and tacked into place .. ![]() They seem to be good , although I do have about 1-2 mm of deflection .. I either need to brace them better , make some more supports .. or re-do the brackets in a thicker material .. . |
so i'm basically FINISHED the emergency cables .. I decided to weld in a support bracket .. I used the same 1" pipe I have been using for the other supports .. a little continuety . ![]() They are now 100% with zero deflection .. I also added 1 more support for the cable , didnt want it "rubbing" against the shock body ... ![]() ![]() and now I just have to "crimp" the cables .. and done . :) . |

I'm surprised that you didn't choose Front Range Off Road Fabrication's Full Floater Conversion for your rear axle. Especially with a blown 5VZFE in your future plans. Not to say that I don't admire your work so far. -- Matt
not necessary .. Toyota rear axles are larger then chev 1/2 ton .. buddy had a 327/350hp in his rig (almost beat my Vett in a race ) ..stock toy axles and 36" swampers .. never a problem .. and I'm NOT that aggressive . besides .. this rig is NOT a rock crawler , it will be a DD /tow rig , as I have stated !!

He meant the ring gear end of the axle shaft. Toy ring gears compare favorably to Dana. FRORF's full floater conversion would have been much stronger, cleaner, and easier to execute. For a DD with a blown 5VZ. |

toyota alles are just as strong , if not stronger then the Chev 1/2 tons . axle sizes between the 2 are basically the same , but the chevs have a "narrowing" near the end of the axle .. creating a weak point .. Toyotas dont !! Ring gear here , being the STOCK 4:10 ratio , and lots of "beef" should hold up excellent to the horsepower .. ( 280 est. with the supercharger we'll see) Full floaters are obviously stronger , with load sharing at the disc end .. I just couldnt justify the price !! shipping and all adds up .. just like when i'm sellin' my stuff .. same sh!t differen product .. http://toyotafiberglass.com . |

not much to add .. started the POR treatment ... driveshaft washed .. then de-greased .. washed again . "metal-ready" prepped , and washed as per instructions , and then the POR-15 . ![]() ![]() . |
Interesting POR-15 story... was swapping out brakes this weekend from an old set of knuckles to the T. Rather, I tried. Rust got in the way. I had POR-15'd the knuckle, steering arm and everything but the disk brake dust shield (which was powder coated) back in 1996. These parts have seen about 8-9 winters of use since then. The POR-15 areas were still "black," but they were pealing like skin after a major sunburn... The powder coaded pieces were great. |
hmmm .. I hope i'm not wasting my time .. I only have 5 years on a previous frame coat , and so far no problems did you do the wash, clean , metal ready ... ect.. steps ? |
Quote: I think it might work fine for you... might not, I can't say. I spent over $350 and numerous hours prepping that dang 4Runner. I POR-15'd everything. Scrubbed it clean, washed, cleaned w/ the POR-15 cleaner, Metal Ready, then POR-15 when the parts were ready. Used two coats, even. I've just never had good luck w/ it. Others swear by it. If it were me doing things again, I'd blast, etch prime, prime, paint and clear coat everything. But I'm a glutton for punishment as well. :) |
I POR'd my frame when they were saying "right over the rust" so i cleaned it up decently and brushed it on. First winter, i went to powerwash the frame and the stuff came right off (i powerwash my frame every week in the winter time)... from then on, i just put a layer of tremclad on every year.... |
well in my experiance ... I have had no problems . there is a procedure .. and I guess I will let you all know in about 5-9 years on how this coat goes :) . |
diff .. and extras .. ![]() ![]() springs are in the works .. and soon the frame .. . |
springs are done ... If all goes well ..I'll have the frame done this weekend .. :) . |
springs .. ![]() but there is no way I'm doin' the frame this weekend .. it's 36* C (about 90* F ) outside .. so I'm goin' to the beach ! .. :) . |
so a wee bit more progress on the POR treatment .. ![]() and I have started to "BLOW" apart the suspension .. so I could get the frame done ![]() .. when FINALLY .. look what shows up .. my new fuel tank .. ![]() it's a bolt in .. and will accept the 84-89 EFI fuel pump bracket .. (mine needs a new pressure tube ) but it's all bolt in .. ![]() ![]() . |
Tank looks good. Where did you get it from and what did it cost? |
I am now the distributor .. http://www.toyotafiberglass.com .. this paticular tank was $275.00 .. but it is one of the more " expencive " tanks .. it's not on the site yet , so just refure to this post . |
dont know if you can see in the previous pic or not .. but the pressure line on the sender is gone .. and the other pipe is rusted .. so I had to fix . I drilled out the old pipes , and started to manufacture my own . The /84 holder didnt fit as "perfect" as I wanted .. so I bent the fuel pump holder , and fit .. bend and fit .. now it fits exactly where I want .. and to go with it .. new pipes . bent up the PRESSURE pipe .. ![]() and the return line ![]() saudered , zinc'd and installed .. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
Same way I did it.
Nice work on the pump bracket. When I converted my '84 pickup to efi I went with a new tank (made in Canada), but my 4runner donor vehicle had a different pump bracket to match the differently shaped tank. I had to pay around $112.00 for the new bracket, but they use the same pumps so nothing extra for that. I was worried about the tank and corrosion, but it seems that they finished mine with some kind of plating that is similar to galvanizing. I coated the thing with spray-on rubberized undercoating for an extra measure of protection. I'm pretty sure it's gonna outlive my truck. -- Matt

Gas eats rubber undercoat pretty quick, so watch for fuel leaks. |

so frame is stripped again , and going for the final welding , and POR-15 treatment . ![]() to today , I got the frame ALL welded .. topside ... ![]() and bottom side .. ![]() rolled it out side , and got the washing ... drying ... degreasing, rincing .. degreasing .. rincing .. and washing again .. and now I think im good to go .. ![]() ![]() dragged it back in .. and did the "metal ready" ![]() just another rince and dry tomorrow , and its ready for the POR -15 .. :) . |
got the frame done today using my "gun" and a small paint brush .. 2 wands .. first is a rotating 360* "V" notch . Second is a 90* rotating . ![]() I'm VERY happy with the way it came out .. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() :) . |
got another little surprise today .. I sent the flywheel out for resurfacing .. and just got it back ... ![]() when the UPS man shows up with my new F1 Racing stage 1 "organic" clutch .. it's rated for 280HP .. so with the supercharger , it should be good . ![]() . |
so started putting it all back together .. ![]() all new hardware , or cleaned and zinc'd ![]() ![]() also got my shocks today .. ![]() so had to get them installed .. loosly . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

That is one cleeeeeeean build. Looks great, i'd love to do a frame up build someday. I think a t-case e-brake may have saved some time and maybe headaches as well dealing with the discs on the rear. Love the build and great work.
thanks .. I'm not one to "buy off the shelf" .. I like to be just a little different , and with all the rear discs out there , I just wanted to show something different . I'm glad I did the emergancy brake the way I did , It's a "1 off " .. and will work for years to come . |
Very understandable, I like to build my parts as well. |
so not much to add today .. but a bit .. dropped the engine back in place , and started on the transmission .. and clutch . blasted the fork to check for cracks and such .. , and then zinc'd ![]() on this swap , you will need to use the 3.0L throwout bearing .. ![]() greased the fork , and inner bearing surface , and installed . ![]() installed the pilot bearing .. ![]() ![]() the 3.4L clutch installed .. with these kits you get a "goofy" plastic alignment tool .. but I like to use my own .. an original input shaft . ![]() and finally the tranny back in place .. ![]() also mounted the starter .. on the bottom mount of the 3.0L belhousing .. it is threaded .. so is the starter .. you I had to drill the threads on the starter so the bolt would go threw very simple ![]() . |

Great progress! Excellent Post! Just thought I'd throw in my 2cents.

re & re'd the ATM wire harness , for the MTM harness .. also installed the front shaft .. had to remove the transfer flange because it has 10mm GRD11 studs , and stock 83 is 8mm .. so same as the rear shaft , I had to drill . also mounted the front of the exhaust again , to get ready to build the rear ehaust pipes , and muffler .. also fully mounted the fuel tank , and installed senders , and pump for good .. I think thats it .. |

Looks good, Corey! |

thanks .. hope you had a good time when you were here ... |

thought i'd post some progress pics .. as of today Aug 9th 2008 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() just working on the "plumbing" getting the fuel lines bent up .. , almost done . . |
started the teardown of the original 4runner the harness came out of .. My therory here is to strip down the harness , and use what I can .. from the "cut " ( as seen in ths pic) on the end of the trailer .. I'm going to use the original harness - some un-needed weight . ![]() I also have the new booster , and brake master , and clutch master .. i'll get pics tomorrow .. . |
so as promiced .. the complete wire harness ... i'll bet this sucker weighs in @ 50lbs !!! dont know what i'll be using .. but I wanted it in one piece .. ![]() same here .. I know I will be using the booster , and brake master for sure .. but the rest , well ........ we will see . ![]() and finally the front clip stripped .. and off to the recycler ![]() . |
so with family here for some holidays , and the shop being stupid busy , I havent gotten much done .. but every little bit , is a little more done . I was working on the harness today , and got lots of it stripped , ![]() hooked up most of the connections , and tagged what I new .. and started cutting some of the non-ecentials , that I wont be using ![]() and what I have cut out so far . ![]() I have a few connections , that I have no Idea about (I didnt dissconnect).. so I'll have to do some research to figure out what they are . . |
so finally finished the harness , and set it aside for now .. I know I have more to cut out .. but dont want to do it just yet , as I'm hopeing to incorporate the systems into the Trekker . I also need to get some more pieces from Daren (White Valley Collision) , as there missing from the original purchace . ![]() and what I have cut out so far .. ![]() I didnt weigh it , but I should have ..... I'm now ready to put on the cab .. then I can route the wiring some what , and fire this baby up .. ![]() but to do that , I now have to tear apart the original Trekker body .. . |
so how about this : I'm thinkin' it's time to get that supercharger on order .. as i'm almost ready to fire up the engine ... so I called my "old dealer" (one I use to work a " TRD DEALER " ) and went to order the new Supercharger .. apparently , they got an email ......TODAY .... , saying that Toyota Canada was NO longer supplying TRD pieces in Canada ... yeah great .. now what ? . |
Well, there may no longer be any TRD pieces in Canada.........but at least you still have Rush
hahaha ... so I checked into having one shipped from the US , and with all in , adds about a grand to the purchace ![]() so I guess i'll be waiting , and hopefully the to "girls" can get things straightened out . |
so I buttened up the fuel and brake lines today , and added the filter .. I ACID dipped the line brackets , as much easier then sand blasting every one ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() bolted it on ![]() an got the line run perminent ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
everything is lookin great in this build. i am really looking forward to seeing it when its finished. keep up the good work!

Quote: So, clock may have ticked too long.... but I'm curious... what would happen if they were to "accidentally" order something? Aeound here, one can often find/make a "buddy" working at the dealer whom might, say, for a couple of beers and a game of darts/pool/poker, accidentally "forget" to read their email every now and again and, oops, had already ordered the part for a good long-time customer... boy surely we wouldn't want to lose the patronage and word-of-mouth compliments of a well-known customer, eh??

Quote: ACtually Corey, your main problem is that Toyota no longer sells the 3.4 superchager BRNAD NEW... the only new one you can get is from a dealer that bought alot and has overstock. TRD no longer sells them (or so i hear). I can get TRD products around here no problem, wonder why you have so much trouble... BTW Looking good! |
actually no .. TRD still sells the supercharger , brand new. thing is .... Toyota Canada had a DEAL with TRD to import into Canada , and distrubute threw the Canadian dealer ship network . The dealers had to "buy in" at a cost of ~ 15G stock there stores in able to supply TRD to there customers .. this was the agreement. so now only CERTIAN dealers are offical TRD suppliers here in Canada. now Toyota Canada and TRD are having difficulties . I do realize I can still order , and still get from most dealers in The USA .. BUT problem is .. the cost , I use to be able to buy (MY COST) $2200.00 delivered to me .. If I have to import myself , best deal I have found so far is $2400 USD + shipping + broker + inport fees + Taxes .. ![]() by the time it's landed to my door , it'll run ~ @3400.00 ![]() I'm gonna wait , and hopefully I will find the right deal . . |

Quote:Quote: thanks .... but no stock in Canada .. so it will get cancelled .. already tried :) . |

whats that shock for along the leaf spring? looks like some type of traction bar. but wont it still twist

started to tear down the original Truck today .. finally ....... got it up to the bay doors .. My son , and his buddys started to clean out the rear .. lots of crap stored in there .. ![]() and cleaned out .. ![]() I was very anxious to see the condition of the rear seat , so that was second on the list .. I was at the front , and was looking at the front passenger seat , and noticed a leaver .. so I pulled it , and to my surprise .. COOL the seat flips forward , to allow the rear passengers room to get in ![]() you can also see the backs of the front seats are covered .. and also , with the seat folded flat , you can see it makes the floor flat .. this is the "Q" for the seat deleate panel in the 84-89's , how cool is that !!!! ![]() I had Brayden jump in , and I had him pull up the seat .. ![]() ![]() It's absolutly perfect .. no rips , tears .. nothing .. only the seat belt impressions .. other then the rust on the steel , it's an absolutly awesome shape .. :) and from the back (seat folded up ) ![]() how cool is that ? so continuing on ... the boys got the windows out ![]() and that was about it for them .. I "cut" out the roll bar , as the one side was rusted completly threw ![]() and then had to grind the bolts off the trim panel , to start the interior strip . ![]() once I got those off , I could pull out the sides , and the headliner .. ![]() ![]() and thats it for today ... :) ![]() . |
so some more today ... basically got er' stripped .. front and rear seats out ![]() ![]() and carpet , and interior ![]() ![]() and now just a shell , and ready to come apart .. ![]() looks like im going to need a whole new floor though .. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

I usually ship my parts to a U.S. UPS store near the border and bring it across myself. I have only ever paid PST & GST on parts, regardless of where they were made, although technically, you should pay duty on parts made outside North America. If you bring it across yourself, there are no customs or brokerage fees. With used parts, like the diffs I got, the border guys usually ask a few questions and wave me through, no charge. If you're stuck, PM me. Maybe I can help since I live a mile form the border. |

today , we got the roof off .. finally what a job .. there are tons of screws holding them suckers on .. WOW . Brayden cutting the rivits , and elevator bolts ![]() seperating the roof ![]() and finally removed .. ![]() ![]() and the dirt packed into a leaking seam .. ![]() and the bottom edge of the topper ... ![]() also got the doors off , and my apprentice , started cutting off the running boards .. They were so rusted , there was just no other way .. ![]() his buddy also showed up , and started on the other side .. ![]() we got er' done , or should I say , they got er' done , while I closed the box install with my customer "Chad" .. and then brought another 4Runner (Andrews) Complete in to the shop , starting Monday .. Tomorrow .. Brayden and I are going to try to get the rear tub and fenders off , and also the cab .. . |

How are you going to fix that floor!!? Are you going to fab all new sheet metal or cut some sections out of a donor vehicle? -- Matt |
well so far the plan is ... I cut out the floor section of an old box I had .. because of the ribs .. so i'm going to see if I can use that . other then that , i'm not sure yet .. |
I know toyota sells floor panels for 84-89 4runners... maybe you can get one for an 83 pickup? |

so my weekend is done now .. with 2 more jobs booked into the shop this weekend .. I dont know when I will ever be able to get back on my Project !!! but anyway .. heres what I got done today .. SUNDAY . sides are off .. ![]() ![]() I'm saddened by the rust I found , but should be an easy fix ![]() and now finally with the tub off ![]() I can finally get the cab off .. ![]() and with a little work .. off it comes .. ![]() ![]() and so now I'm ready to get it "set" on the new frame , and start this puppy up .. :) :) . |

Nice to see your helpers wearing not only safety glasses, but hearing protection as well. That way they still have it to get blown out at a rock concert, lol. |
not much to add ... but every little bit is a step forward .. has a moment ... so I was able to "knock" off the original sound deadner in the cab .. If I can find a flat bed trailer , I can send it off to sand blast .. ![]() . |
so with the floor now cut out .. ![]() ![]() I started to cut out the rest of the rust .... ![]() VERY happy with the out side rockers , no rust at all ! so I have now started building it back up .. couple of small pieces . ![]() . |
got a bit more done today .. sandblasted the inside of the rocker , and zinc'd .. ![]() also got the seatbelt rienforcements in place .. ![]() and with all the pieces now cut out , I started to weld er' all together ![]() ![]() ![]() just have to "dress" the spot welds and one side is ready for the floor :) . |
did a couple of hours tonight .. got the cab mounts bent up , and welded .. ![]() ![]() ![]() and kind of what they will look like .... ![]() also . did a little more cab repair .. ![]() welded in a new little patch ... ![]() cut out the new piece , sand blasted ther inside , and zinc'd ... and welded . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
so a wee bit of work the last couple of days .. and I believe I have finally got the drivers outer rocker done .. so now I can do the inner . cut off the old rotten fender mount .. ![]() cut the new/used one off my parts truck (already done a while back) sandblasted .. and then fit . ![]() and welded ![]() also made a little patch for a weak spot on the rocker ![]() and now I can fit the inner :) . |

Kent White, aka, The Tin Man and owner of TM Technologies is one of the premier auto restoration master craftsmen in the world. What Corey is doing with this Trekker is in the venerable old tradition that Kent promotes at TM Tech. I suggest that if readers like this kind of craft that they check out the videos, live workshops and tools available through TM Technologies. If I was younger I'd make this kind of stuff my life's work. I might anyway. I'm not in anyway connected with TM Tech or Kent White, except that I admire what he has, and is, doing to preserve the fast disappearing art of the metal man. Keep up the good work Corey. -- Matt |

My frame has a rust hole in the EXACT same place above the front leaf spring mount on the passenger side rear. Anyone else have the same issue? Is there a design flaw that causes this to happen? By the way, great job you're doing! |

so now the outer is done on the drivers side .. time for the inner :) got the upper support welded and started on the lower and seat belt support ![]() ![]() and finally the inner rocker skin ![]() also got all the welds "dressed" ![]() and also got a little new piece today ... ![]() just need an "extension" on the stock pipe , and I can install the mufler :) . |

ewww why a flowmaster? |

why not ? |

Quote: Some people don't like the tone, especially on a 4cyl. However, w/ your drivetrain plans i think it will sound nice. |

yeah ,no 4Cyl in this piece , supercharged 3.4L V6 .. and I think it'll sound great .. a little louder then most would like , but.. I'm and "old school" and dont mind some "tone" ............. foo!

It's also the worst flowing aftermaket muffler out there... creates alot of unwanted backpressure... they are tough as nails tho.... |
Quote: stats ? .. as far as I know , they are a free flowing /minimal back pressure muffler .. it's what I have read anyway . only down issues I have read and heard on wave files .. is there loud .. but' i'm likin' the noise .. :) |

Quote:Quote: Here's a chart for you. http://www.dynomax.com/products/ultrafloweld.html i believe it because the dynomax is a straight through design and the flowmaster has lots of baffles to create the sound. |

I am also surpized to hear toyota has floor pans for sale for 4runners. I ve seen aftermarket for FJ's almost the same as jeep pans not much to them.
Toyota has NO floor pans avaliable .. |
Why do they offer them then? |
Quote: they dont ... well maybe we should clarify !!! on the 4runner rear "box" floor area and rear passenger seat pans are avaliable .. but for the front of the cab , under the gas pedal and mid cab mount area , they are NOT avaliable . They do show a picture of it in the EPC , but NO prefex # to order front floors . if you'll send me your serial # (4runner) .. I will post the EPC pic . . |
so I was able to work a bit on the trekker last night .. Because of rust issues with the drip rails .. I decided to cut them off .. and so started to cut the rails off .. had to do this in sections , and tack it , so that the roof wouldn't "pop" off :) ![]() and with it fully removed ![]() ![]() and just about finished 1 side ![]() . |
Nice. I was SUPER close to do doing that with my 4runner, but didnt want to spend the extra cash... should look great.... |
thanks bud .. smoooothie cowl is next on the list .. |
little more progress .. and custom touches :) because the 3.4L 's intake is on the battery side .. I had to remove the old battery trey .. It was a little rusty anyway , so it was an easy decision ![]() ![]() and started "plugging" and grinding all the NON-ecential holes .. ![]() ![]() ![]() also .. cut out the vents .. for a "smoothie cowl " .. ![]() ![]() just about done , and ready for sandblasting ... . |
cab is finally back from the blaster .. ![]() ![]() ![]() and "clamped" .. and ready to weld :) ![]() ![]() . |
got one side on the back done today .. cut out the rust and made some patches ![]() made a new panel ![]() and all welded ![]() . |
Damn, i'd hate to know what i would have to pay to get all that work done... |
Is it just me, or will about 25% of the steel on this truck be new welds? ![]() You must have the worlds best memory to be able to get it all back together after taking it that far apart... I took about about 100 pictures and made around as many labels just removing/re building my engine. |

back at er' today .. and got the other side done .. ![]() also got most of the cab sanded ... and ready for some epoxy primer :) ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

looking great! I have floor issues on my 81 hope you post some good pics on the floor repair/install. I m sure it wont be made of street signs.

some epoxy primer today :) ![]() ![]() ![]() yippie .. it can now go onto the frame , and I can get on to building the floor . . |
Quote: I was just thinking, the other day, that I have turned just about every bolt in my '84 truck and even put new metal into my frame. I'm nowhere near the master of this stuff that you are, but it made me think that it's a good thing to have this kind of knowledge and familiarity with a machine that you use everyday. Much better than going down the road without a clue. My plan is to stick with the second generation truck and a first gen 4runner and work them until I'm dead or they are outlawed
kind of my Idea as well ... stick with what you know . |

Mad, mad skills Corey, we can't say it enuff!

tks M :) |
cab on !! :) ![]() ![]() yippie .. now I can start on the floor . everything fits awesome , and I'm very happy .... EXCEPT only 1 problem .. well not really a problem , but they arnt what they say !!!! the TrailGear hoops I got , say "Our Medium Hoops will accommodate 12" shocks without cutting the inner fenders" this is not true .. because of this , I will now have to add a 1" body lift . so 1" body lift .. and all is extra good .. good clearance on the cross-over ![]() and a test fit of the STOCK hood :) . oooo yeahhhhhhh !!! ![]() . |
Quote: OK, I'll bite. Why do the floor with it on the frame? Is it because it will require some custom fab to clear the swapped drivetrain? |

that .. and just want to make sure it fits . |
MAN O MAN... my wife just had to smack me, cause I was drooling..... That is one sweet ride!!!! |

and body mock up ... ![]() ![]() . |
Lookin freakin awesome! Do you plan on replicating the orginal graphics like the side stripes and "trekker" on the back? |
Quote: yep .. I think so ... except the part on the back that says "made buy winnabego" i'm thinkin' "made by toyotafiberglass.com"

so with the holidays apon us ... and Me booking "lightly" in the shop ... I had some time to work on a few things .. muffler I bought a while back I fianlly got it placed .. ![]() I hade to get a small "extension bend" to get it where I wanted .. but it's now in place with a hanger . ![]() also acid dipping some small pieces ...
so a little bit more got the cab mounts .. "fit" .. + 1" body lift to clear the TG hoops >:( had to cut , and drill .. and zinc .. but finally "tacked" .. and cab is now sitting on it's own ;D ![]() ![]() ![]() now ready to "mock" up the floor ..... . |
so a little bit more today .. :) working on the floors .. made some templates first . ![]() and transfered them to steel ![]() cut them and fit them ![]() ![]() ![]() also started on the tranny tunnel pattern ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
What's wrong with the tranny tunnel you have? is there some fitment issue w/ the replacemnt tranny? i'd think the (unplanned) 1" lift would help that. And - are you concerned about noise and/or fitment issues w/ the homemade floor pans being so flat, as compared to the original? |
I'm using the original tunel as a "template" only .. I will not be reusing it ..(as you can see in the pics). old one wont work , just simply be Kuz I said so ! I'm still in the process of building .. so please be patient .. I still have to add some corragation , or bead roll for strengtheners to stiffen up the floor .. I will also have to build some "plates" undernieth .. I still have a ways to go .... but I apprecieate your comments . . |
so more work on the tunnel , and a solution to the cab floor , and Trekker tub connection ..... ![]() ![]() so now with the basic "mock up" of the floor and tunnel , I can now cut the floor of the tub and build a deeper floor for the rear seat passengers ![]() and starting a new fiberglass tunnel (templating from my new tunnel) ![]() one issue , maybe ............ I cant find anyone in our town with a plenishing hammer .. so no floor corragations .. I guess we'll see how it goes . . |
Corey, Looks great! How will you make the transition from the steel to fiberglass floor? |
thanks .... there will be a crossmember undernieth for support , and the fiber floor is then bolted (originally screwed) and sealed to the metal floor . |
and NOW ..... the fun begins :) ------ check it out ----> ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() cut a hole in the firewall .. and started some connections ![]()
Quote: I'd let you use ours... but... couple thousand km's away! lol... why not buy a bead roller? I dont think they are TOO expensive... are they? |
bead roller wont do 14G .. I didnt relize this when I first posted !! .. but I know now . |
Also, you know it isnt too difficult to build a planishing hammer? Ours we used 4x4 tubing, a long barrel air hammer, some die's and a foot actuated valve. |
my neighbor (landlord) has one sitting in the back 40 .. I think this year , I'm going to get a metal shop going .. building some "specific" metal pieces ... |
couple of progress pics engine compartment "mock up" continues ... Rad installed , starter is now wired as well as the alternator . ![]() and more floor space ............ ![]() and also dash cluster "mock up" ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
Man, all that nice touch and clean up udner the hood - I'm really surprised you didn't repaint that brake master cylinder, it really sticks out now. |
please dont forget this is all "MOCK UP" ... there is NO WAY i'm usin' that rusty ol' master ... come on now , you know me better then that !!!! I'm just getting an idea of where things go .. drilling holes , and mounting "ecential" 5Z pieces into the 22R engne bay . MOCK UP ... This will all be torn apart again .. even the cab will come off again for final welding , and prep . this is just an excersize . |
Am I seeing thoughts of a 'glassed dash???? if so any other thoughts for the other componets (Air vents/Gauges/Switches) hhhhhmmmmmmm |

Quote: keep em' guessin' and they will return

ok .. working away .. and 1 thing on the list to get done was the lower rad to engine connection .. with the new turbo 3 core rad , there was only a wee connection between the engine and the rad .. so i ended up cutting about 3 " off and welding a "new" lip .. ![]() and installed .. sorry .. not a good pic . ![]() now a simple 90* to connect .. . |
for those of you whom have commented about the "rusty" master.. I thought I would get to the real replacement .. ![]() ![]() ![]() 2000 4Runner duel diaphram booster with the 1" master , and clutch master .. the clutch master is close and actually touches in 1 spot .. I'm going to correct that when I pull it a part . because of the size of the booster and the length of the studs , the original spacer is not usable . also installing the booster with the stock steering shaft the u-joint at the fire wall hits the booster .. so in order to accomplish the booster install , I pulled out a spare /84 shaft I had from my 2WD project .. the shaft has a ball socket , instead of a u-joint , making the "connection" much smaller . ![]() swaping the whole steering column is not possable because of the mounting points 79-83 ![]() 84-88 ![]() unbolting the lower column housing and "swaping" ![]() the floor mount for the 83 dosnt fit the 84 lower .. so I have to "open" it up a bit .. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and with everything back together .. I now have "VERY" large brakes :) and should be able to "stop on a dime" ![]() ![]() . |
This should be the nicest trekker ever on the road when it's done. I cant wait to see it
needed a battery tray for the drivers side .. so I made one .. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() not welded to the cab yet as I need to do some finish bracing .. so I'll wait untill I pull the cab off to do the final welding .. also started "prepping" some mounts .. getting some pieces in there final location .. fuel canister is "mocked up" cut some metal out for the perfect fit under the hood .. ![]() ![]() ![]() shouldn't be to bad as , i'm not using a "flexy" suspension .. I doubt I will ever "touch" this mod with a tire .. I know I could run the "round" type fuel canister .. but I didnt want to . . |
made up some brackets and finally got the fuel canister mounted .. ![]() and also the fuse box ![]() also started on the gas pedal . the original 83 was toast .. as with most of them the hinge that mounted to the floor was rusted and beyond repair .. I didnt want to use another "floor mounted " pedal ... so I made my own heres where I started ![]() the bolt patterns are different and positioning is also way different , so they are NOT interchangeable . I started by cutting the pins off of both pedals .. first I cut off the /83 pin and welded it to the 2000 shaft . ![]() then for the tension spring I used the post fron the 2000 , drilled a hole for the spring , and welded it to the /83 bracket .. sand blasted and started to put it back together . ![]() put some zinc , and then some color and mounted .. ![]() I had to drill new holes for the throttle cable and will weld up the old ones when the cab comes off for final welding and engine bay paint . |
progress has been slow as of late .. My shop is going threw some growing pains , so not much getting done threw out the week .. but this weekend , I was back at er' .. getting everything labled .. it's comming !! ![]() also , checking the fuse box on the drivers kick panel .. and there really isnt much room ... so I'm going to build a specific box or "french" the fuse box ![]() . |
I really do not envy you on that wiring job... |
it's not fun ... the manuals are not as good as I thought , wires posted in different areas , I have even run into different color coded wires then listed , I know it's me and not the manuals , but jeeeezzzzz ... I have little hair as it is . looking back , I should have just stayed with the original harness , but my delema with that is that it was 25 years old ! so in the end I think it will be worth it . |
I'm so glad i bought the ORS swap harness and brand new engine harness for my 3.4 swap. |
finally got a day off to work on my truck :) and got the brake lines done and clutch line .... ![]() all the brake lines are now plumbed .. even built a bracket and mounted the new proportioning valve ![]() ![]() 2 more lines to run .. fuel and fuel vapor .. . |

supercharger is here ... havent unpacked it yet tonight .. but will soon .. |

Hey corey, if you dont mind me asking, where did you get it from and how much did you pay? I'm looking for one (PM me if it's private info)... Greg |
my dealer program is no longer importing the 95-2002 superchargers into Canada .. go figure ???? as soon as I need one .. anyway .. I found one on Cali craigs list , and bought it . and why dont you have the 1/4r's listed in your sig ? |

went skiing for the weekend , so not much time for the project ... BUT .. I was able to slip away for a few hours today and get some things buttoned up .. ground wires were made , and connected , i was also able to "loosly" connect the fuel system .. so I think i'm good to go here .. need a battery , and some fuel .. then I'm ready to crank ! |

so more today .. I just couldnt wait .. Its alive !!!!
sorry for the crappy vid ... just my little camera , it's all I had .. I hope it gives you a good idea of what it will sound like ... . |

Congratulations, Corey! Awesome! SK |

little more today .... still workin' on the wiring !!! I believe I have the body computer figured finally , well "somewhat" , wow .. what alot of head scratchin' buttoned up the wipers finally .. The 1999 + wiper switch, houses the relay . Yes they are combined .. /83 is is seperate ... so I had to wire in the /83 relay , and now I have intermittant wipers , and the "mist" works all speeds .. DONE .. well except for the final saudering .. I also have dash lamps and guage lamps .. head lamps and signal lamps are next ... |
Awesome build man. Everything looks great so far. I couldn't stop reading.
thanks ... build progress is slow right now because of the wiring , but I hope I now have it figured ... and can now get on with some more building. |
Any pics of the wiper switch? Retrofitting a 99+ switch sounds quite interesting. I didn't know it would mount up. |
i didnt use the 99 switch .. I used the original /83 . I am however using the whole 99 body harness, and it dosnt have a seperate wiper relay . originally i thought it was controlled by the body computer/integration relay , but it's not . |
I have head lamps , hi and low beam w/daytime running lamps (Canadian option) also park lamps
excellent day today ... I think I have this body computer figured out finally .. sigs work horn, hazzards , brake lamps and all park .. heck I even got the clock happinen' dash lights , door swithches , ignition ring + delay .. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() just about done the wiring ... I to to have it all buttoned up this weekend ... :) . |
little bit more today ... heater works + REAR heater (never had them in Trekkers ) , and reverse lamps . here's the nice thing .... i'm now counting DOWN to the last few things I need to wire .. The list is almost done ... heres the list left to do .. speedo/sensor 4WD indicator lamp oil pressure guage amp meter guage BOOST guage rear view mirror/dome lamp . |

I hope you've got a wideband as well! |
Quote: why ? it's not a turbocharger and I dont need EGT's to run it properly ... it's a supercharger , horse power robbing , belt driven supercharger ! |

Have you done reasearch about this blower? Without proper fueling it runs lean lean lean... www.gadgetonline.com |
yes I have ... |
I'd say about 20-30% run well without proper fueling, but you will make more power and run safer (lower EGT's) when it's tuned correctly. |
so gadget dosent even use a wide band is not even recommended .. but ya never know .. I might just do a wideband !!! I know all about "tuning" .. I will have all the capabilities of the OBD2 from original spec , and I WILL be able to map my own computer .. and not have to realy on other manufactures "gizmoes" .. gimmy a break , have you read the "parts list " zip ties , and shrink tube .. I dont think so ! not in my house . . |
Word of advice about force induction, dont think the stock EFI will just "work" if the stock motor was not supercharged with same exact parts, id really recommend taking it to a dyno have them deal with it, I melted down a turbo'ed M10 bmw motor in matter of weeks (21lbs boost 300hp :). Really neat build, I never seen someone take so much detail into a truck like this. Cant wait see it completed |
cool thing about a TRD supercharger (2nd gen ,black) ... they are built to fit on a stock truck with NO mods .. this is also why the "stock" set up with supercharger , gets more HP with the stock air cleaner assembly then with the K&N cold air intake !! just like that .. TRD spends tons of cash to make sure it works on your stock engine ! I will go that route . thanks !!! |
Nah nah nah, the problem with the 3.4 blower, was they didnt add any fuel modifications. THEN, when Gadget started doing the URD fuel kits, TRD came out with the 7th injector kit to cure the leaning out / high gear/pinging issue. However, since the TRD 7th was not end-user tuneable it didn't work well all the time (usually ran pig rich). Now, with the 4.0 v6 an 5.7 v8 blowers, TRD sends NEW fuel injectors and has a re-flash for the computer (which they didnt do with the old ones, dont think it was possible) which compensates for the boost. TRD knows they screwed up large on the 3.4 kits and they rectifyed it for the new kits. Also, how do you have control to "tune" your stock OBDII computer, gadget cant do it without add on devices, so i doubt you could, without a piggyback computer, no offense. Read this page: http://www.gadgetonline.com/4Run.htm Take a look at that difference in power, with just a piggyback computer and bigger injectors... no smaller pulleys, nothing. TRD definately didn't do it right. |
no offence taken ... what can I say , this is how "things" happen ... People also said I couldnt put in a 2000 harness in an 83 and make it work !!!! so .......... started "cleaning" up the wiring .. being I'm almost done with the wiring .. I want to start "wraping" the systems :) . |
so a little bit more today .... I got the dome lamp/rear view mirror "fit" and wired ![]() and almost done the wiring .. only things left now are the : 1. radiator cooling FAN 2. amp guage 3. boost guage 4. o/p guage .... and any other guage I might "think" I will need :) everything else is DONE ! I know it dosnt look very "nice " at the moment , I do still have to "pull " some pins and i'm going to wait untill I pull it out again to do so .. most of the final saudering is DONE .. again .. I want to wait for some of it untill pull the harness out , so I'm not working in such cramped quarters . ![]() also working on the factory air box just about dont that .. ![]() . |
What happened to that snazzy floor you fabbed up? |
it's easier to "climb " in and out right now , with out the floor in .. BUT ... it IS going in VERY soon :) ..... . |
Spaghetti factory?? |
not for long .. basically done today guages were the last of the interior wiring ![]() so all I have left to do is the engine fan .. :) time to start welding in the floor ... yeah!!! . |
Yeah, I reckon if you were doing dash work that standing on the floor instead of the pan would make one's back a lot happier.
Any plans on sound deadening? I'm planning on doing mine before the 3.4 goes in. with my exhaust, those 'glass rear panels do NOTHING to stop the sound... should be a fun project... |

yep ... I'm picking up some dynamat for the floor , I also am getting DEI thermal firewall and tunnel shield .. of course this all goes under the insulator and carpet . as for your 1/4rs , I've had some guys spray the inside with undercoating , and tell me that makes a big differance on sound infulltration . |
I suggest not to get dynamat. the regular stuff is junk, and the "extreme" is overpriced. From my research, this is the best on the market http://www.secondskinaudio.com/products/Noise-Reduction.php |
so where in Canada do you get it ? |
There's a place in Fonthill (about 20 min from niagra falls) where i'm going to pick some up. Damplifier is about $3.50 / sq ft. Oh yeah, anything that comes on a "roll" or is rolled up, isn't meant for cars, it's meant for roofing. If it comes in sheets, it's meant for a car. I've learned that in my searching (dynamat extreme and damplifier come in sheets) The b-quiet stuff comes in rolls (made in alberta) . Here's a cool site: http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/ |

had an hour today ... so I thought I would start on the floors .. got them drilled , and fit again , and started to "plug" the holes .. got a couple done and ran out of wire .. crap !! I hate when that happens ![]() . |
tacked !!!
still have to modify the seat crossmembers to fit (there just sitting there ) and weld the nuts before I can weld them in --- but kind of shows you the seat support .
. |
couple of things today .. got the seat belts installed / mocked up I do have to still plate the mouinting bolts on the floor , but I will do that when I have the cab off . ![]() also removed the air intake muffler , and made a pipe . this pipe diameter is 2.75" and seems no one in town has . ![]() . |
continued with the floor mock up ... but first had to replace the seat tracks .... some one cut and welded the rails >:( i'm going to re-do the seats anyway , so no biggie !! ![]() removing the seat back cover , lock strip and hog rings . ![]() ![]() and installing the new rails ... ![]() with the new rails , I now could line up the rail , and weld mounting bolts .. and zinc . ![]() ![]() ![]() aligned , and welded ![]() and seats ... BOLTED :) ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
couple of more things .... buttoned up the heater control valve , and hoses including the rear heater piping ... ![]() also got the new fan installed .. I decided to take back the 14" 1500CFM in favor for the 16" .. 2500 CFM had to cut the lower support .. but no biggie .. ![]() made a new hood lock support , "boltable" ![]() just now waiting for the fan controller now .. :-/ (ordered a week ago ) . |
so not much to add ... built the box for the body computer .. and I'm just awaiting my new fenders to check clearances .. I want to move out as far as I can to alow for inner kick panel clearance .. ![]() also got my new Optima battery ![]() and also just got to day for the wiring near the exhaust ... some heat tape :)
sweeeeet, awesome job. kinda envy how you have the space and time to do this work...by the way, is that heater valve oem? aloha.
thanks , I wish I had more space and time .. fishing and camping soon , and also coaching my boys ball team ... not much time for me . Yes heater control valve is from a 89 4Runner 3.0L with rear heater . hoses and all fit excellent . I changed the routing of the rear piping for the rear heater though , I am using 14" of copper for each line , only to get by the crossover pipe , then I'm going to route rubber hose , and insulate it for better rear heat . |
so spent a few bucks today ... bought some shop tools and consumables , and some dollies . I wanted to put some tires and wheels on it , and the dollies will just make it that much more maneuverable .. so .. I put the shoes on for mock up (they dont fit quite right as they hit the calipers) and got it on the dollies .. also got the fiber fenders set on to check the body computer box clearance .. fits perfect :) , so now I can weld that .... so now I can push it around the shop .. I thought I would do a full body mock up ... hehehe .... enjoy .. I did ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Where about in Penticton are you? Every spring i plant around princeton & climb at Skaha but i kept forgeting to come visit you. Guess I will have no excuse this coming summer... |
coming along real nice. are the bedside pnls the originals? what happened to the roof, is looks like its sagging??? |
Is it just the angle, or is there something up w/ teh camber on the driver's tire? |

Quote: on Commercial Way , in the industrial area ... your welcome to come by .. I just ask , you call me first .... I cant always just stop , to chat . Quote: bed panels are the original fiberglass from winnabego , and so is the canopy .. I'm going to be building a new mould for the tops because most Trekkers look like that .When Winnabego built them , they used balsa strengthener strips , and they have all collapsed .. I have pictures of the Trekker I built for a fella in Texas If you want to see . Quote: Yes there is .. as mentioned above , the rims hit the calipers on all 4 corners . The "shoes" are actually my summers for my DD IFS toy . These are just on there for now (mock up) , untill I order my NEW ones . I really wanted to get a "guage" as to what size of tire I wanted .. those are 31's . . |
finally got the fan controler mounted and wired .. I decided to go with the Flex-a-lite controler .. it will work from 60% to 100% depending on temp. .. + if necessary , it will run 30 seconds longer after vehicle has been shut off . ![]() also .. got my new shoes 315/75R16 's .. (35 X 12.50 16) ![]() ![]() . |
NICE! I dig the wheel choice! Makes it look like a whole new truck vs the other ones... (damn maybe i should put mine back on)

Quote: Thanks Bro .. I really like them myself .. old school

so continuing working on brackets for mounting "items" got the rear heater mounted ![]() also working on the wiring ... made brackets and mounted the computer , routed wires , and "tying" the harness for final loom .. ![]() also started on the dash ... because of the larger 2000 4Runner speedo , the left ball vent would not fit .. so I first cut out the old , and started to tack in the new .. Thanks Paul .. (donated the piece to the project)
so couple of things today ... started machining a new antenna mast mount .. I know some might call it silly .. I just think it's all in the small details .. you can see the old ones in the picture .. and neither nor really fit the new 2000 POWER antenna .. and because the fender is "flat" on the top where the antenna sits , the newer power antenna mounts dont fit either , they sit on the side of the fender .. in the picture .. the chrome stock piece is only a 1/2 .. the picture only shows 1 side .. I think it looked dumb , so this is why I'm making one . so I started this .. still more polishing to do . ![]() also decided to mock up the headlamp doors ... ![]() and continued working on the dash First I made a template for the original "woodgrain" , out of paper ... layed it onto some steel , and cut it out ... test fit ![]() then I cut a tab or edging and welded ![]() ![]() ![]() trimed and drilled ... and screw'd into place .... Now I have a bare template for heater controles and switches , and sterio ... I'm not a smoker , so there will be NO ash trey in this unit !!! ![]() ![]() and .. as this day was ending ... I decided to tape off the dash , and lay some tin foil on the dash .. in prep for fiberglassing a new "base plate" for the new dash pad ... ![]() and a first layer of mat

Wow, you're really getting there Corey. With all the little electronic gadgets out there, you might consider putting in a cig lighter, if not for anything else, for a solar battery charger or something. I use the one in the back of my '99 quite a bit; mostly for air pump for camping mattresses or small air compressor. Just a thought; what do the boys think of this project? I know ya keep 'em busy!
I don't think my ash tray has ever had actual ashes in it - but it's a great place to contain loose change, rnadom bolts, candy... all kind of crap that would get thrown around as soon as you leave pavement. i liek teh idea of starting w/ a fresh flat console plate though, now you can lay it out however you want. |
Quote: exactly .. I am going to use the 2 accessory ports from the original 4Runner .. I did keep the wiring intact for those for exactly the reason you mentioned . 1 in the front (dash) and 1 in the rear . Quote: no ash trey , I want the room for "other things" . I know what you mean about the "little things" being tossed in the ash trey , my DD is the same . I have thought about this , and I am going to be building a center console .. so I will have the room there , as well as cup holders ![]() not set on the lay out of the dash yet , I just know for sure , where the heater controls are going .. . |
Are you gonna throw in an inclinometer just for kicks? |
Quote: nope . so little more to add ..... got the POWER antenna mount done ... and mounted ![]() also .. continuing working on the dash .. trimmed the fiber dash base ![]() and "hammered" out a new corner dash piece , and welded .. ![]() ![]() and started on the other side ![]() . |
made the Left lower dash plate today .. in the same manner as the right.. hammered out a piece , and welded it together . Last piece is the center piece . Then I can start to make the "cutouts" for the switches and such . ![]() . |
got the center section done today .. ![]() ![]() now I can lay out my switches , sterio and heater controls then .. time for some body work and "tweeking" , paint .. 2 part foam and sewn leather top . |
not much to add ... have been "tinkering" on it every "now and then" . I have pulled off the back 1/2 again .. because I wanted to wire the LAST pieces .. pump and sender .. pump works awesome , sender NO . 1 of the issues is the fuel warning lamp . /83 dosnt have .. /99 does (dash cluster) I dont know of any way to wire this issue .. so I'm going to have to use a /99 fuel tank sender and build my own sending unit . under way . |
got the sender done today ... here's what I had to do ... first I made the top , just cut it out of some 12G scrap I had ..then I drilled the mount holes .. ![]() trimmed , and finished to a perfect circle (well maybe NOT perfect . I had a few difficulties figuring out the support .. because the hole on the tank is so small .. there was definatly some "grey matter working " but I got er' figured !! the mount support , off-set to fit into the smaller hole ![]() ![]() and with a little "massaging" I was able to finally "roughly" mount the sender , and stuff it into the tank . once I was able to fit it .. I needed to support it . so I made some little brackets , and drilled and tapped the support holes . ![]() this is a pic of the sender as it came out of the /99 is tank .. ![]() and after cutting the original mounts and ground off .. heres what I have now .. with the new clips new ground wire and main support I made . ![]() and all together ![]() and mounted and tested .. it works YEAAAAAH !!!! ![]() so now I want to send it out for anadizing .. then I will seal the wires .. . |
installing the SUPERCHARGER ... finally .. ![]() ![]() finished .. ![]() supercharger WHINE .. is so cool .... ![]() but I really have to put some coolant in , so I can run it ... this weekend for sure !!!!! . |
Dang Corey, I'm excited for ya. Gotta be killer doing it with what little spare time you have. Way to stay with it!
Freakin awesome build... Thanks for sharing all of your progress.
Looking at your last pic brings up a suggestion I have used on both my 93T's. Instead of the chintzy plastic clip for the hood hold up rod, put a small piece of velcro in the appropriate place. Never rattles, never wears out. And you do not have to lean on a piece of plastic if your are under the hood. |
thanks and wsquaredodie , the 79-83's actually have a metal screw on , prop rod hold down .. low profile , much nicer (in my opinion) then the plastic ones that always break . |
Sounds like a good idea - but laying your big belly on velcro is much better.........

I wasnt going to , but I decided to finish wiring the fan .. and hook up the cooling system .. The last things I had to do , for a running unit . I have had many times when I have done wiring (not my favorite thing) thought I had it all good .. taped and loomed only to have to take it all apart again because of some stupid mistake . so this is why I wanted to get it running perfectly before I took it apart for the last time ,and , taped and loomed it all up .. I'm glad I did . Today I finished the plumbing .. all clamped .. also buttened up the fan wiring . filled er' up with some coolant and flashed her up .. I have 4 problems ... 1. the temp guage went to hot "right off the bat" wiring issue maybe .. not sure just yet . 2. amp meter dosnt work .. 3. check engine lamp - checked with my OBll reader , and have only 1 code 4. since I put on the supercharger , its running rough and really low idle ~600RPM , I think I have a vaccuum leak maybe . I wasnt able to look into any of these just yet , but obviously will !! . |
Might want to verify god ground on the electrics |
I will ...
so wee bit of progress today ... had an hour , so I was able to figure the temp sensor .. IT works now . you were right , I had unsuspectantly removed the ground wire from the combi. meter connector . check engine lamp is still on , but now I can run it .. and did so today .. found it running rich and I still have air temp control code .. which I believe now is the IAC valve .. iratic idle and rich .. hopefully I can check that out tomorrow . and still have the AMP meter not working ! and that is it . . |
Amp meter only works if the circuit is complete. Look for a bad connection somewhere |
SO wait, do you have an ampmeter, or a voltmeter? An ampmeter has to be hooked up inline in the positive battery cable (in series). Voltmeter would be an easy hook up... |
Mine's (as most) is an volt meter. Not very accurate, of course. Still, if the amp meter is not working you have 2 choices. Bad meter, bad connection. After checking in my stolen 1963 Stockel Auto Mechanics fundamentals book from Spencerport High School (yes, I AM that old), volt meters are connected in parallel with a circuit. Ammeters are connected in series with the circuit. Therein may be your problem. ps, ohmmeters are connected in parallel with the load with the negative side of the load unconnected to the power source. If you want, I can make a copy of this info and forward via email. If everyone wants, I can figure out (again) how to post the book info on the site. ps, this book is so old it SMELLS old. |
so little more investagation today .. checked out the IAC today .. and all within spec. .. so I had a chat with one of the local toyota techs today , apparently the air intake sensor is incorporated into the MAS .. tried to clean , and no go .. so i'll replace , and try again ! also .. brain fart it is a volt meter .. wsquaredodie , your welcome to post up some info on wiring !! . |
Copied the book info to a word file. Any idea how to get it posted? Bill |
not sure , but I believe you have to upload it to a host site first , I use photobucket for my pics , but not positive on a word file ? |
so no luck so far .. I'm hesatent to run for any length of time , as its running very rich .. and I'm worried about piston melting !! I tested the MAS today .. and very close to spec. but just off a bit .. I'm wondering if it's my OHM meter ? I dont know ! The OBD11 code suggests otherwise . I phoned Darren at White Valley Collision , where I originally bought the engine package , and he has willingly "stepped up to the plate" to replace the piece . AWESOME service !!! and a GREAT guy to deal with !! new/used MAS is on the way .. this is basically the LAST thing before I can tear it down for paint .. Paint is here , so I'm wanting to get this wrapped up !!! . |
worked on it for a few mins today .. my buddy Paul came over to help .. replaced the MASS .. and no change .. checked olm values .. and both the same .. After Paul left , I ran the Trekker up to temp .. .. even got the new fan "pushin air " .. I'm very pleased with that aspect .. as engine temp. stayed @ 1/2 guage . I assume it's 195* but didnt actually check .. I did check heater opperation , and both front and rear were blowing HOT .. so all is good there :) so basically I'm stuck here .. My "rich" running engine either boils down to a harness issue .. or computer issue ... my OBD11 reader has = getting a code P0110 Air Intake Temp. sensor 1 circut ... which from what I understand this sensor is incorporated in the MASS .. I replaced the MASS with another .. and same symptom , same code .. cleaned both .. same thing with both . I have also pulled out code P0172 = system running to rich bank 1 . and P0100 Mass or volume air flow A circut . so I'm totally confused now ? I'm going to check harness integrety , dont think this is it , but I will check it to the computer plug .. then the computer is the last option , but ... no test -- correct ? just replace ? talked to Daren (white valley collision ) and he dosnt have another computer .. I really hope I dont have to spend another G note for a computer !! . |
Presuming you'd use the same ECU as the US, wring that one out before looking for another one Corey. Remind me again which engine is in there now please. The 'bank' thing has me thrown off.
Might be a question to ask over on customtacos or yotatech, alot more 5vz users over there. Is the MAF and the ECU all from the same truck? |
Quote: Quote: yes ALL the "stuff" is from the same year = /99 (or so i'm told). engine was originally an ATM from a 4Runner . everything else was from a /99 Tacoma MTM . only thing I have done to the engine , is swap the ATM harness for the MTM harness , and add the supercharger , and of course the crossover .. I'll have to hit toydiy and start comparing part #'s as well . . |
toyota changed MAF's and o2 sensors in 1999. The MAF pinout may be wrong. Gadget at URD knows all about it, try asking him. |
Thanks Bro ... i'll try . |
so i'm running out of options ... and I still dont know what is wrong !!! VERY frusterating .. and I dont want to do this anymore !!!! I spent about 3 hrs today on the "check engine" and I'm almost ready to admit defeat .. I have talked to a buddy of mine (All Toy , in Kamloops ) and he got a rig in there shop , basically with the same symptoms .. he asked me to let them know whats up !! anyway .. I got the new/used MTM O2 sensors .. and as I suspected . the wire length is different .. so hence the part # change .. (I guess) installed = NO differance . checked wire harness integetry between MASS and computer = contenuity OK on all 5 wires . Harness is good . also checked computer values as per "diagnosis" in manual ..THA + E2 pins .05~3.5ohms @20*C all with in value . suggest pins are ok .. I didnt get to operating temp. and check values .. lost hope here > I'm realy lost here now .. and almost ready to give up !! considering removing the check engine light bulb , and compensating the TPS .. or something stupid like that !!!! ![]() I dont get it .. everyone elses swap seems to go so simple .. what the hell !!!! . |
It wont run 100%. Why dont you take it to the toyota dealership? It's all stock computer, they should be able to diagnose it. |
ohhh it runs awesome ... just rich ! and that dang check engine light is on !!! I got the manual now , time to get er' fixed ! |
YAHOOOOOOoooooo !!!!!!! finally got it figured . Code PO110 (in my case) started with replacing the maf with another .. no change . checked wire integrity with my ohm meter .. continuity , good also checked values on the computer , everything checked out !!! system OK ... still had the check engine .. anyway , you guys know the story ... I decided maybe something happened to the computer , so I searched Canada for a MTM /99 computer . found 1 .. after thinking about it , for a while and considering the MTM computer , for this year , is a rare bird .. (9807-9908 only).. so I decided to buy it . well got it today , and plugged it in ... I was bummed when there was no change , and still "check engine" with a code ... I have been checking my wiring thoroughly .. as this is the only direction I could go .. lots of wire checking , head scratching and reading the manual , when I turned the page , and saw a picture of a MAF, that was not the one I was using .. Toyota is usually pretty good with there descriptions , and not usually generic with there pictures .. this was it ... I had the 2000 MAF from my supercharger purchase , hooked up the intake and plugged it in .. PRESTO ... NO CODE ![]() runs awesome ... I'm so happy !!!!! turns out I had the wrong MAF supplied to me with the original purchase of the engine conversion "kit" ... man the time and MONEY I spent on this is just crazy !!! and now I have way less hair @!! but i'm happy it's done and running awesome . also talked to Darren today , and he has offered to send me the correct parts via Greyhound prepaid ... to correct this misshap .. so now ... it's VID time !!!!! COMMING SOON . |
Eh, eh, what did i say! Told you they changed the MAF's alot! only 95.5-98 interchange, the newer ones are all wacky. But for mine, i got a supra twin turbo MAF,
However, all the MAF's will work with all years, but you have to move pins in the harness. |
yeah .. silly me . |
Good to hear tho. I'm almost getting ready to drop my 3.4 in. Just waiting to get the cams back from the grinder and the short block assembled. Then, throw it together, and drop her in (cant wait). Then, we can duel (haha). Yours is still gonna be much cooler than mine. Oh, so, are you ever going to start doing replacement floors for the 1st gen 4runners? I might be one of your first customers.... (or i go to cali and buy a rust free truck and drop my drivetrain/interior in it). |
where the heck is your build thread ???? how come I cant find it .... Dude !! I fear the floors will be a no go .. as Toyota owners just dont want to spend the money and our reasearch . quote from another board
biggest problem we run into .. and please dont take this the wrong way .. toyota guys are cheep for body repairs !! they just dont want to pay for quality body pieces .. WAAAA it's a 25 year old truck , YET , they will pay thousands and thousands to the marlins, and trailgears for suspension stuff ... but , when we did our market reasearch for "stamping" new floor pans .. for instance. toyota owners whom wanted them .. only wanted to pay $25.00 ea. real market production costs and min. mark up suggested an ea. price "volume" cost of $125.00 . for a quality product . quite a differance ! hence ... we wont be doing it untill the market changes . . I would love to build them .. but unfortunatly .. not enough of a market . . |
No thread yet, i want to wait till i get the engine back from the shop, as it's been idle for me for weeks. I've also been really busy at my dads shop as he moved last month, it was a big job, just finishing up loose odds and ends now. Floor pans? Sheesh, i'm willing to spend a good $750 on (good) floor pans... i figure it's reasonable. But, understand how it is.... Not everyone wants to do that. Then i go see my cousin drop 20,000 for a new stroker engine for his vette, like money aint a thing... lucky bastard... lol. |
125 bucks, thats cheap! Making your own out of whatever is more money in the long run b/c you have to shape the things. Not everyone has the roller to do it. Fiberglass is good stuff man.. |
yeah guys .. I kind of thought 125 ea. was a VERY reasonable price myself . Thing is though , not every one does ! We have to have them "stamped" in volume .. thousands of dollars in out lay for the initial purchace , and to have to inventory the "pile" in the shop for 20years , dosnt make sence to me .. not a good investment ! we wont be doing them . . |
Congratulations! Would be great to see the truck and I'll be in Penticton for the next week. Sent you a PM. As for the floors, I would gladly have spent $200+ on pans to avoid the work I had to do to properly replace the driver's toeboard/ floor in my truck after a leaky winshield left it rusty. |
PM back at ya !!! your always welcome foo ![]() . |
rewired the /98 MAF today . ![]() and a VID :) wee bit of belt squeek , but i'll get to that later . ![]() . |
Very nice. I hoipe you had a nice long cold one after that.
Now that's the kind of whine I like! |
thanks guys ... little work on the dash today .. got the clutch start switch and "spare" switch cover mounted on the left side .. had to cut out the old dash piece , make a new "cluster" mount and suport piece for the underside .. welded it all in , and got the dash partially back together . |
so continuing working on the wiring , and getting the dash all layd out .. continuing on the dash got some of the swithches in .. ![]() ![]() lamp reostat , hazard switch , and clock .. ![]() ![]() started working on the heater bezzle and broke it .. D@#B !!!! so I now need to find another one ![]() . |
Damn- that just made me tingle. WOOOOOOOOOO!!!! We're very proud of you Corey. Just saw a 98 engine FS in the Sunday paper; needs rebuilt; $200. And I just picked up a 2004 Taco.

Must be the angle of the pictures as it appears the bezel is crooked? |
center one ? it's not actually "screwed " in place .. it just "placed" in it position . I do see what you mean though , wierd , must be the angle .. it is square . |

Quote: so as it turns out ... it was crooked . I guess from my pulling it in and out of the truck with the suports cut out , bent it . the whole left lower section was "bent" over about 1/2 inch . once its bolted in the truck , should be good . ![]() . |
diggin the stereo ;-) |
yeah !!! sterio will be a motorized 7" touch screen , including GPS . I'm still not "sold" on this "cluster" set up though .. having second thoughts ... . |
^ If you covered it in say plastic, leather or something it would be a whole lot better. Maybe that faux wood paneling you can buy at the orange depot-it sticks on. |
yeah .. I was thinking a "wood grain" of sorts .. to make it "stock like" in appearance .. sometimes with so much on the go .. it's hard to focus on 1 thing .. . |
I'd be flipping the stereo/clock with the HVAC controls if i were you, with your way, you cant use the ACC with the stereo! come on corey!
good point ... But I cant .. cables are specific, as well as the controles , room is also an issue , as the heater box would be in the way . sterio cant be moved as well , because it needs the "room" for the motorized head .. this is my "best case senero" and i'll just have to deal with the critics or choose another sterio . |
^^ he raises a very good point. And maybe more importantly, you're going to be reaching waaaay over to teh right to fiddle with your radio whie driving. I get annoyed enough with the stock location on teh 2nd gen trucks, being pretty far down low in the center of teh dash, I feel liek I have to really move my attention away from teh road when changing stations, loading a CD etc. If I were designin ga dash from scratch, I'd mount that sucker high and and close to the wheel as possible... |
FWIW Im not a big fan of the motorized head units, I had 2 of them break in my old camry and no longer open/close and I didnt do a thing. They were $$$ Pioneer, replaced under warranty then that one broke so I said F it and bought a regular old HU. Had another idea, could build up the dash with fiberglass and bondo and paint it with plastic paint. It will come out very nice-but its alot of work. |
Quote: seriously .. it's not much of a reach .. it's basically the STOCK location and I dont think interups my "attention" to much .. so really I dont think it will be an issue . gotta remember .. I'm trying to keep this stock "style" so I kind of want to keep it "factory looking" Quote: thats some good info .. I was really wanting the motorized head unit for "status" ... but I'm really re-considering now . as for the fiberglass dash .. not on this one , My 2WD build http://toyota2wd.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=allgoes&action=display&thread=18 I'll be going all out , but not on this one !! want is "kind of "stock " looking . |
Yeah, that was another reason, i would never suggest a pop-out screen to anyone. I'd rather have a stock HU. BUt if you can modify it for double-din, i would put in a 6.5 or 7" touchscreen in any day. |
GPS was the main reason for the flip up screen ... |
No way at all you can install a double din to mod the dash? |
FWIW things that do more than 1 function never seem to work that well imho. I have a garmin GPS I use for work, NUVI 750 model. Mounts to the windshield or w/e you want pretty much. Works EXCELLENT since I use it every single day driving a truck all over the place. Just imho.. |
I have been looking at the Kenwood DV4100 .. or a "potential sponcer" has suggested .. we'll see I guess ... |
That is just a nav unit that locks on to the head unit, you still need a screen. My cousin has an older one it works pretty good. Updated maps are pretty expensive tho. |
ok .. so basically done today .. just have to locate the sterio , (still not sure on which one I'm using ) and "finish " of the dash bezzle .. I have been thinking of a woodgrain type covering/paint .. to simulate the original , maybe the "inferno Red " paint , I was even thinking of covering it in carbon fiber ... anyway not sure here's how it is now ..
I vote woodgrain. If you go to orange depot you could get some awesome paneling that would work really, really well. |
Quote: I tend to back this idea, recently lookin gfor a new HU for my wife's car, i really wanted a multi-function deal too. In te hend I found that it was just more cost effective to buy two seperate units, not too many options for all-in-one that really do a good job of everything without being super $$$. IMO you'll want a GPS from a good company so you can reliably get new maps... in the end, that's what they're really about, the maps/service. That said, since you're building teh dash ground-up, you could probably easier make a nice mount for the GPS unit and a seperate lareg screen if you wanted that. Oh and carbon-fiber coverin gwould be bad-ass... but not real fitting for the age/style? I guessst he quetsion is, are you going for new & stylish, or classy? |
Quote: I think I'm "swaying" to a wood grain "finish" , as I think this BEST fits the overall project . . |
so some mock up on the dash ... I have been working with a "wood guy " ... and here is so far what we have come up with ... please ... this is NOT the final position of any of the components .. so dont look at that !! just the color is what i'm interested in ! ![]() It's a Cherry wood vaneer .. no varnish yet , so it will look a little "glossier" once done ... but it kind of gives an idea ... I think it will really bring the INFERNO RED exterior into the interior .. I'm considering some door panel incerts as well :) what do you think ? also looking at a "tiger wood " incert as well ... so !! . |
I think the tigerwood would be better imho. |
so it finally "cooled" down to 33* C (90*F) outside ... and was able to get some work done .. as mentioned .. I decided to change the dash again .. so I welded up the clock , hazard, and dimmer hole .. and cut the NEW gauge holes . ![]() the frame of the dash had also been butchered by the previous owner .. ![]() so I cleaned it up , and started to make some new supports . I have more to do , to get the sterio supported .. but I wanted to make sure everything was going to be ok before I did all the work . ![]() also , now had to RE-mount the heater controls ![]() so , now I'm happy .... ![]() and "installed" ![]() . |
Nice i like this setup. What gauges are you running? Boost AFR EGT? |
Now this dash I like a lot better too. ![]() Are those a pair of cig lighter ports for toys at the upper right above the stereo I'm seeing? If so, that's a nice upgrade the boys will appreciate. |
Quote: Thanks bud .. gauges are .. volt o/p and boost .. and I will be adding ,W/T, F/P , and EGT .. in ther center console :) Quote: thanks girl ... yep .. those are the 12V ports ... got one in the back 40 as well :) .. . |
Gauges in the Dash. Stereo in the center console .... sorry.... |
Quote: I really wanted to .. but just couldnt do it . The heater box was in the way , there was just no room to do so . |
I like that a heck of alot better! |
holy smokes! you rock!! nice.what a build..... |
thanks guys ... I'm going to build a center console as well ... I have A few more guages , as well as the clock and such going in there .. . |
I didn't see a spot for the arb switches
speed bumps dont need ARB's .... . |
ok .. so back to work ... enough with the "holidays" :) got the tranny tunel sealed .. did some wrecker searching today and found just what I wanted .. mock up ![]() holes drilled and "Nut certed" ![]() installed ![]() ![]() . |
and on to the center console mock up time for that .. cardboard .. ![]() ![]() so far , so good ! :) . |
No dual t-case? |
Don't need dual t-case's for speedbumps
yep .. not a crawler , it's my tow rig for my 2WD 400HP supracharged "hotrod" . |
got some work done on the console today .. started with removing my template .. I picked up some 3/8" fiberboard , to make my "plug" started with the sides of the console , clamped them and sanded untill they were exactly the same . ![]() and started to cut and install the panels , using the patern from my "template" ![]() and started to round the edges ![]() ![]() ![]() and the first coat of filler .. ![]() ![]() thats it for today :) . |
Wee little more today ... sealed .. and first primer ![]() ![]() gettin close to building my mold . |
ok .. so , I took yesterday off sunday the 13th , as it was my B-day .. and " I wasnt aloud to go to work :) " so today .. I popped out the new pieces .. I cant wait to get them on !!!!! ![]() ![]() consol is in the booth having the mold made :) . |
Niiiiice! Good to see you don't mind pimpin' your product on your ride there Corey!!! |
yep ... opps .. sorry . I should have known better ... but I guess it saves me havin' to answer "where'd ya get it from " |
so just to let every one know .. I "peeled" out the "plug" for the console .. I now have a "basic" mold :) I still have to "wet" sand ... and wax and polish .. but if all goes well , I should have a NEW piece by the weekend . |
so pulled the piece today .. trimmed it up , and "roughly" did the cutouts to fit it ... ![]() ![]() ![]() fits like a glove :) still have to put the guages , cupholders and such in .. but this will give you an idea . |
also ... just to let ya all know .. I destroyed the mold .. so this is a 1 off .. . |
Why would you do that man, all that hard work and you dont want anyone else to have one? |
it was my temper I got mad at it .
I see.. Scary stuff man. |
once in a while .. ya just gotta "vent" .. inanimate object's are ok in my eyes !! . |
sorry for the slow progress ... but today I have a wee bit of an update . started the drivers door panel , I have to re-pin the hinges , so I will be sure to post that as well .. (hopefully this weekend) but for now , this will have to do started with removing the door and hinges ![]() Next .. with the grinder "clipped" the edges ![]() and off comes the skin .. there is a few spot welds , expecially for the vent window supports .. but easlily dealt with .. ![]() New skin goes on .. and time to make it stick !! I didnt have a mini rasp, have to go buy one .. so I called er' a day .. ![]() . |
Shakes head in awe....wow. |
got the flanges cleaned up today .. and got the POR15 on them ![]() also "cleaned" up the inside , and got it POR15'd ![]() trimmed up the holes for the handle and lock ![]() and installed and ready to "bond" ![]() . |
ok continueing on ... In order to "attach" the fiber skin .. you need to scuff the panel , where it will contact the metal shell , for as the say in the industry "tooth" , meaning .. something for the epoxy to stick to fiber panel ![]() metal shell , back to bare steel . ![]() The epoxy I use in my shop is 3M panel bonder .. it's expencive , but if done propperly , it will never come apart , and they guarentee it !! ![]() so now .. epoxied .. and clamped .. just has to cure .. ![]() . |
so now the door is "curing " ...... time to address the hinges .. lots of play , so time for some new hinge pins . had the hinges sitting in a pot of deluted hydrofloic acid over night ![]() so it make sandblasting a little easier and heres the works .. ![]() had to cut the pin , and punch it out ![]() next , I had to drill the old hinges to fit the new bushings ![]() both sides have to be done because , the pin is a little larger . File the " burrs " and install the new bushings .. The pin also has to be trimmed , because it was to long . ![]() I "plug" welded the bottom of the hinge , for safty .. and a little primer ... DONE ![]() just have to wait for the epoxy to cure .. and I can mount the door :) . |
all excited , I went in this morn. to get the door mounted .. removed all the clamps , and connected up the door handle , bolted on the hinges .. and got the door back on ![]() ![]() ![]() Marked the position of the mirror , drilled and "nutcerted" ![]() and put the mirror back on ![]() Very happy with the way it turned out .. when I trim the fiberglass panels , I always trim them LARGE .. so there is enough panel to make my own panel gaps . it's always easier to remove material , then to add it . So when I do the "final" body work , I will be able to sand down the door edges , to make perfect panel gaps . |
Are you making door skins for sale? 84 - 88? Tell us more about the hinge pins too. -- Matt |
Matts .. yes , they are on the website + the 2nd gen door skins are comming very soon .. I have some rear 89-95 hi-clearance box skins hitting the market next , install comming soon !! hinge pins are a "generic" set .. about $5.00 per .. and the should be avaliable at your local parts store . |
how well do those nut-certs work? I have been interested in them for a while but don't know anyone that has used them. |
I love em' .. I have been using them for just about 30years now .. so as mentioned .. center console is now mounted .. got the gauges in .. also started to re-do the dash again !!! I think this dash has been the hardest thing of all .. you look at it all the time , and I'm trying to get the "best" aesthetic value I can .. I hope this is the last time !!! ![]() ![]() . |
so .. done , well "rough in" anyway :) I'm very pleased , and will be able to look at it for a long time . I went with the /83 ashtrey , and the /99 lighted , cig lighter . ![]() ![]() . |
I thought you were leaving the ashtry out? It looks great.
Quote: I was .. and thanks by the way .. but since I removed the guages and installed them into the console , I had to fill the space with something !! .. I'm satisfied with the look now (3rd time), so I can now move on . |
Ash trays are great for loose change and random screws anyway... |
Quote: thats what I figured as well !! .. got everything in the dash "mounted" today .. made all the little clips and mount brackets .. and welded them all in place . so now they can easly be removed , but wont be falling out . :) I have also changed my plan for the dash .. I wont be doing the woodgrain .. I'm going to paint the main dash and center console the "inferno red" , same color as the outside , with the cover/pad being grey leather to compliment the interior all the dash trim is going to be painted black I now just have a few little dash lamps and such to wire , and I believe then , I am ready for the tear down . |
passenger door "epoxied" and curing overnight .. also got a little more done on the wiring .. had to add and move a few plugs for the lighter and such also got all 4 accessory ports wired .. drilled and set into place . I want to add the cup holders to the console , and maybe a "pocket" as well .. have some pics up tomorrow . |
ok .. so I believe I'm all done the wiring now :) .... Finished up the guages (now green) almost time to sauder all the cinnections , and tape and loom . ![]() also did the new dome lamp in the rear , ![]() and a "walk-in " lamp wired to the auto shut off lamp system , I will install it down in the foot area when the time comes . ![]() . |
Nice- I like the gauge lighting. How is your parallex view for them? Looks like they're flushmounted instead of tilted? Those other lights going under the dash then? |
very well actually .. I can see them perfectly .. the face of the gage in the housing is slanted a bit not flat and also the lens is convex making them much easier for this old guy to see :) . and the lamps for the rear .. very rear is a dome lamp , and the other is for the rear passengers , it will light up the foot area in the back , untill the door is closed , then in 15 seconds goes out . |
Dash epoxied and ready for the final bodywork :) ![]() . |
so today the dash bezzles .. hi-solids primed twice .. and sanded once. .. I'm STOKED .. so far , they look awesome !! :) i'm hopin' to shoot some black on them this weekend .. . |
dash is basically ready to go for paint and trim . I still have to finalize the gaps yet .. but basically done :) here are the pics .... ![]() ![]() ![]() also .. trying to get all the little things done , I built the console arm rest , got it hinged and front latch , also the limit strap done .. and now also ready for trim/covering ... ![]() ![]() also working on the shifter boot mounting .. bent up a coat hanger into a square , and got it welded today .. figured out how I'm going to mount it .. just need to make some small clips ... . |
so some pics of the shifter boot mount .. ![]() here is the "ring" with the clips .. the shifter boot will be sewn to the ring , and the held down with the clips .. on to these studs . ![]() . |
That's a clever little bit of fab dere!
tks... gotta get all the "little things" looked after as well . |
so .. not much going on .. but I have been collecting some parts .. got my front bumper finally :P .. (thanks to Adam ) also got my rear seats (thanks to Darren) I also picked up a stock 89 4Runner roll bar i'm goin to try incorporate in to the build . also finally got my stock wiper blades and mudflaps (thanks to Paul) thoughts for a rear bumper are leading to a 4Runner as well .. it has a straight bar with ends .. It has the "winch hole" .. but i'm thinkin' If I can get a banged up one .. I can weld up the unwanted holes , and have it re-chromed .. and I think I have the rear licence plate lamp worked out .. I hate to think of it , but the 2008 Nissan Pathfinder has my perfect solution . anyway .. thats where I'm at !! . |
so I was able to get to the shop today to work on my own stuff (finally) ... pulled the top off . and the outer fenders ... got the fender inners all cleaned up , and ready to repair the cracks and add the tail lamp pockets . ![]() ![]() also figured the placement of the rear seats and then pulled the tub off ready to start cutting that up ![]() also started on the rear seats .. pulled the seat covers off of the bottoms , and got everything measured and figured . the factory 4Runner width measures 51" .. max trekker width I'm going to make work is 42" which means I'm going to cut the tub and the seats to fit . I have measured the seats and had to cut 4.5" out of the frames .. 2.25 on each side , 3" in . got one done today ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
little more today .... started re-sizing the other side ![]() so got it done ... this pic gives you an idea about the size i'm going for ... ![]() and cut the tub , but didnt want to cut to much out in "one shot" .. so this way I can glass it back up and regain some rigidity ![]() and a "test" fit ![]() also .. started on the backs of the seats .. removed the covers and foam ![]() and readied them for cutting .The backs are a different cut pattern , as they have the headrests .. I will still need to remove the headrest supports , and re weld them in the correct position . ![]() . |
so had a little time today .. and got the seat backs cut and tacked also removed the headrest supports and the lock support .. ![]() got the foams cut and glued ![]() also was able to start on relocating the lock support .. ![]() and cutting out some of the rusted old supports ![]()
got the seat backs mocked up .. and i'm stoked :) .. lines are perfect . I'm hoping to have them work like the 4runner , with the bottoms lifting up , and the backs folding down .. so far so good . ![]() also got some work on done on the fenders repaired all of the cracks and lower lip + the holes previous owners have put in .. also got the new taillamp pockets in ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
Wait - so this thing dosn't have a flip-down tailgate? Seems that would be annoying to get things in/out. |
If you ever sell this thing... i think i'll have to buy it... |
Quote: I will sell it ... but not cheep 10's of thousands ... Quote: actually , it's not so bad , as you can walk right up to the back of it and get stuff out , and not have to wory about reaching over a tailgate .. it really nice actually .. But i'm going to be building a small tailgate anyway , because I want to also make the roof removable like the 4Runners .. so I want to have something to continue the body line . . |
wee bit more today ... got the mount strips rienforced , and added a memorandum (my biz card) glassed in place :) ![]() also got the seats all welded up .. with the locks cut the top seat glass out to expose the rusted steel rienforcement strip .. and did some POR-15 to help prolong longjevity . hopefully i will get it glassed up tomorrow ![]() . |
so .. postin the good with the bad !! (ugly pics) continueing on , and almost done with the cutting ... removed the wheel well and relocated it 2" up and removed 1" from the rear , and moved it forward , which will do 3 things .. 1. remove that .. n ... hump in the middle of the wheel well (stock seat ketch bracket) 2. create an armrest for the rear passengers instead of the stock 2" arm rest pad 3. allow a 84-89 4Runner roll bar to fit ![]() ![]() . |
lots of grinding and sanding , gettin close to a finished piece . wheel wells are now basically finished , little bit more to do . added/replaced the steel hatch support pieces , and glassed the old roll bar supports ![]() also braced the floor as it looked like a washboard !! layed down a 24oz layer of woven roving , and then topped it off with a layer of 1.5oz mat .. floor should be flat again :) ![]() . |
OOowwweee-- that's a lotta dope Corey. Lookin' good tho'. Bet the boys hope to see this thing in your will!
yeah right !!!
little bit more today .. I was able to cut the 4Runner bar to the correct height ![]() and test fit ![]() also made up the base plates . ![]() conserned about mounting the fiberglass tub to the frame and possably creating water leaks or even stress cracks i have decided to make a "flexable" mount . Poly performance makes a kit for this (thanks for the link Robb) http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Cage-Tie-In-Kit-p-433.html ![]() ![]() ![]() but of course I will be making my own . |
Quote: I figured that would tweak ya.
Quote:Quote:

so .. my version .. ![]() just now will need to weld the "feet" to the roll bar and then the frame supports . |
So Corey I'm curious about something. Given how much you have custom-fabbed thus far - why mess w/ a stock 4Runner rollbar, which you had to modify anyway, rather than making your own cooler/stronger one that may be a little less instrusive in that space? |
Awesome work, Corey! Haven't checked in for a while so it's great to see what you've done. Can't wait to see the Trekker on the road. |
Quote: so .. as we know .. the Trekker was the "proto type" vehicle for the 4Runner .. i'm trying to stay somewhat true to that , but with more emphasis , as we now have actual used 4Runner pieces to use . building one would be easier , but I actually want you to be able to look at it , and say .. "thats a 4Runner roll bar " hope that makes sence ? Quote: thanks bud .. got your email while I was on holidays .. I will try to answer asap . |
been going threw withdrawls not being able to work on my Trekker , so I have been going back after the shop has closed , to get some work done ... so working on the rear tub as well , I "attached" a 2x4 to the outside to level the mounting flange (substraight) ![]() re-glassed-- adding 2 layers of 24oz woven roving + 5 layers of 1.5oz mat .. basically , this will make it stronger then the original steel that was in there + it should last and not rust out like the stock one ! ![]() 2x4 substraight removed and flange trimed ![]() and now the sides and topper back on for body line adjustment ... OMG sometimes I even amaze me .. it's perfect and need NO adjustment .. i'm super happy with it .... ![]() ![]() . |
ooooooooooo baby; it's startin' to look like a TRUCK!!!!! Nice way to head into the weekend!

yep .. thanks ... Workin' on it this weekend ... hope to finalise the rear cab suport and "tack" it into place this is my goal !!! . |
got to work on the rear floor crossmember today :) welded and bent up the pieces I need , and got it "built" ![]() Tacked into place for now , untill I "blow" it all apart again for paint , I will then finish all the welding . ![]() if you compare the previous pics of the seats , you'll notice the seats wernt level .. but now with the rear floor support in , :) ![]() and Now .. I can finish the rear tub !!!!! ;D heres the start ![]() . |
yippie .. I have a floor ;D some essential pieces for the mock up .. corrugated plastic , an LGD , and the fiberglass trany tunnel I made way back when .... ![]() ![]() ![]() and some fiberglass ![]() . |
mock up today of the rear seat area ..... ![]() rear seats "loosly" fit in to place .. time to start on seat belt location + some extras .... ![]() seatbelts and roll bar are going to be tied into the support frame (all trekkers have em) that I will be custom building . a look at the rear seats in position as well as the new wheel well/arm rest . ![]() ![]() . |
Makin' progress now! Coming along fantastic !! |
rear backs are now installed .. I want to still make them lay flat .. easy fix .. and that will come soon , but for now .. ![]() ![]() . |
AWESOME build... Wish I had the time, the resources and the SKILLS!!!
thanks . |
little bit done today ![]() started on the frame to support the tub , and tie into the roll bar and seat belts started with building the main supports .. and yes the tops are NOT level . This is due to the uneven fiberglass floor . ![]() ready to go (4 built ) ![]() starting to "piece" it all together drivers side ![]() passenger side is different , because of the fuel filler tube .. had to be routed over top . ![]() all sectioned together and ends plugged ... I have too very strong mounts ![]() and mounted ![]() still have to build the cross bars ... But it will have to wait till after I pull the tube off for rienforcing .. the glass will add to the thickness of the tub , so I cant build the final floor support untill the tub is done .. . |
excellent day ... got my check list done... feet welded on the bar ![]() and my goal today was to have the seats basically done.. I have welded the locks and covers .. (you can see in the pic) lock button supports welded headrest supports welded seat back cushions "carved" and fitted ![]() also got the roll bar mounts done.. well tacked anyway ... I decided I didnt need the "swivel joints" anyway .. the sub frame is mounted on rubber bushings , and the whole tub will flex as a unit .. good to go !! ![]() also started work on the rear tub member ... I dont think the thickness of the glass will be a problem , as the underside on this section is almost done anyway .. still have to weld it ... but heres were I finished up the day at ![]() sorry for the crappy pics... my "good" camera took a dive for the worst .. so i'm dealing with my phone for now .. . |
got a wee bit of work on the rear lower seat hinges today .. I took the original 4Runner lower seat hinges and cut them down ![]() then welded up 1 of the brackets .. tacked them on .. and did a test fit .. COOL !!! it's going to work awesome :) ![]() . |
1 more thing buttoned up today ... made some "pockets" to seal the seatbelts from the elements .. ![]() how the seat belt fits !! ![]() and installed ![]() ![]() . |
some work on the seats today .... got the hinge holes welded up , ground and sandblasted again :) ![]() ![]() all welded to the seat frames .... ![]() and installed ![]() and working awesome :) ![]() also built a "locking" post for the seats .. so they will work like factory ![]() and installed ![]() and working great ... took some time to build this and make it work properly .. I also started the new front kick panels .. little sneek peek ![]() . |
Coming along great Cory
Quote: thanks :) . |
ok .. so a little work on the door today .. got the old original unit stripped and in pieces ![]() ![]() some measurements for location refferance ![]() ![]() and the main frame re-welded and sandblasted ![]() also while the frame was in sandblast .. I worked on polishing the window alum. piece .. as some may remember .. I'm going with a strong chrome theme :) . .... ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
got some epoxy on the steel .. and some hi build on the plastics :) i'm going to make a mould of the inner plastic trim .. fiberglass will be stronger and easier to repair if necessary .. I dont know why Winnabego didnt do this in the first place ? anyway .. a pic ![]() . |
one of the last pieces I have to make .. kick panels .. so I have now done a little bit more work on them .. because of the body computer on the drivers side , and the computer on the passenger side .. stock would not sufice any more , so as in the previous pic , I made a template , and built it to fit .. primered , and being sanded .. almost ready for moulds .. ![]() ![]() . |
Corey, what substrate do you use for making those molds? is that clay? |
nope it's gelcoat .. made a flat fiber piece as shown a couple of posts up , glued some wood pieces , and filled with bondo .. and gelcoat to sand .. . |
so a little time for a wee bit of work on the last bits .. I have finished the moulds for the kick panels .. hopefully tomorrow , I can start making me a set .. ![]() also working on the rear hatch trim panel mould .. . |
so , kick panels are done.. I was only able to "fit" one side because I need to finish up the wireing .. but here's what they look like .. ![]() and installed ![]() and I also decided to get a NEW hood .. just because everything else is new :) ![]() . |
This rig is gonna be Gorgeous! Can't wait 'till she's finished. |
thanks .. actually gonna start the teardown for inner paint tomorrow .. gettin' close :) . |
Excellent Build! Can't wait to see when its done! PS I'm the 33333 viewer!
and so .. The body work begins .. started at the front .. with the bumper . becuse of the 1" body lift .. the front bumper didnt quite sit right .. so I made some 1" extension brackets and welded them to the bumper supports .. legthed some spacers for the other mount .. and viola .. front bumper done .. . |
body work has started .. little time today to work on the valance.. I wanted a custom piece .. reasons are .. well I just have sooo much time !!!!! the original center mount is no longer there , so holes would be mute and I dont like the transision between the side mounts so the plan is .. to use a 2WD valance .. (it has a deeper center and also lines up with the grill ends .. beauty body lines ) The 2WD valance mounts differently , and is also shorter , and also has a center support .. so .. heres the start .. cut off the center support .. and "bent it" to fit better ..... :) ![]() I will also get rid of the mounting bolts .. and have a "smooth" trasition between the valance and the fender .. hammered a new piece to fit .. ![]() . |
continueing on with the valance .. I finished up welding the end pieces on , and a little bondo .. and a first coat of primer .. still lots of sanding and finishing .. but you get the idea . ![]() I will be making a mould for it ... as the fiberglass will be less flimsy also finished up the rear hatch cover finished today :) ![]() ![]() VERY happy ... and WAYYYYYYYYYY stronger then the flimsy plastic piece . |
Am just goin' 'wow' all the way Corey. Holy bats! |
so continueing on with body work and finishing .. I took apart the rear seats and readied them for new covers .. and "buttoned" up the modifications to the supports and levers . cut and welded .. and sandblasted , and zinc'd .. ready for some color ![]() ![]() also tore apart the front bumper that took me a year to find.. got the supports and underside of the filler panel sandblasted and cleaned up .. ready for some POR-15 to seal . ![]() and done ![]() also cleaned up the inside of the bumper , and scuffed the chrome , and zinc'd ![]() ![]() ![]() and polished and buffed , and waxed the front ... almost ready to put it back together , just need some color on the topside of the filler :) ![]() . |
popped the new valance out today .. I like it ... ![]() also POR-15's the fender/valance mounts , as well as a bunch of other stuff .. but here's those pieces ![]() Teardown is continueing ![]() time to remove the wire harness ![]() . |
started working on the doors and inner trim panels .. got the inner of the doors cleaned up , and just about ready to prime .. also started on the trim panel started with a flat sheet of fiberglass ![]() marked it and trimed it to fit I was going to have it 2 seperate pieces , like the stock panel , but my "mid speakers are to big :) ... there is a small "step" in the door panel anyway .. so cutting it and re glassing it will achieve a perfect fit with NO rattles . ![]() starting the "mock up" for speaker location :) ![]() . |
so .. waiting in the shop today (my day off) for a customer to show up for some pieces .. I decided to clean up the headlamp buckets and mounts .. dissmantled them .. and did some sandblasting ![]() and all the regular cleaning .. and such .. and some POR-15 on these as well .. also while I was at it , I polished up the headlamp rings and hardware :) ![]() . |
not much to add ... got the headlamp bucket and pots back together ![]() and the power went out .. ended my day early . |
got a little work done on the door panels the last few days .. building the speaker enclosures has been the most time consuming , but should pay off in the long run . Instead if just cutting a hold in the door and mounting the speaker on top , I wanted to "enclose" the speaker in it own "pod" so the sound coming out of it is just that much better .. so I was thinking on how to do this .. building custom moulds would take to long .. and i'm really wanting to press on !!!! so I decided to start looking for a mould already build which I could utalize .. started pulling bowls out of the cupbords and measureing for size , looking at all kinds of things I could use , even went to wallmart and searched for aplicapble forms . I ended up going to the dollar store , and finding a perfect size plastic dog dish for $1.50 and a smaller cat dish for $1.25 . started making my pieces .. so I have 4 mids and tweeters going in .. 2 front 2 rear . I needed 6 bigger pieces , and 4 smaller pieces .. ![]() so after I figure the speaker placement .. started to fit it all together .. cut the door metal to fit the "pods" and glassed the rear portion into place ![]() ![]() cut down and prepped the new set of moulded pieces to fit the speakers ![]() and all mocked up ![]() ![]() ready for some foam and leather to finish !!! should rock :) . |
did a little clean up on the wiper motor at lunch time today .. pulled it apart and cleaned everything up ![]() didnt have to paint anything .. except the alum. housing.. and the assy. screws. acid diped and then bead blasted .. and then clearcoated all back together .. ![]() . |
little work on it today I was able to start stripping everything out of the cab .. prepping to remove the cab for inner paint .. ![]() Wire harness is also now out .. so I can finish with saldering the joints and loom/tape . ![]() and a little look see of the pieces stripped from the truck ![]() . |
So what is your plan with the rear topper? It's not really designed to come off, is it? Will youglue/glass it in, or make it removablle 4Runner style? |
I was going to "make" it removable .. but i'm running out of time . |
Quote: Running out of time? it's already been, what, nearly two and a half years? What's the hurry now?
3 years .. this is the "time limit" unfortunatly , I have not had the time to do some of the things I wanted to do .. I have other projects in the "line up" waiting to get there time in the shop as well .. so it's time to wrap the trekker project up and move on . |
so the rear tub has now been removed , so I can now finish the glass work . ![]() Tub support also removed , and I was able to finish the welding on it some POR 15 and it'll be done and ready for reinstall ![]() engine bay is almost stripped .. ![]() cab is almost ready to come off :) . |
so friday night TV .. no good shows and board so back at er' a pic of the tub .. ready for the final cut outs and glassing.. ![]() also POR'd the rear frame support and other goodies :) ![]() and started on the wire harness .. ![]() . |
some work on the weekend I neglected to post .. ![]() wire harness is comming along :) also today , I got the tub trimmed up , and basically finished the topside .. ![]() . |
Corey - Been wanting to ask for a while. How is the 'glass box attached to the cab? What will keep it from flexing at that joint and cracking? thx! |
as with the winnabego mounting .. it will be "mechanically" fastened .. the differance is in the rubber mounts and the frame I have made , The rubber mounts are a soft /flexable "puck" which will allow the rear tub to flex with the cab .. however , only "real time" testing confirm ( I hope I'm right :) ) . |
got the speaker holes sealed , and the seat belt covers on .. ![]() also got the bottom of the steel rienforcement exposed .. cleaned and POR-15'd built the jack, tool and GPS box built .. (hidden under the seat when done) and will be ready for FINAL glassing tomorrow .. ![]() . |
yaah !!! got the tub all done today ... ![]() floor is rienforced w/24oz woven and a couple layers of 1.5 oz mat storage box is also done .. ![]() ![]() also got the floor welded .. and now I can remove the cab to finish up all the grinding and welding underside ![]() I want to get the body work VERY close to completion .... so I want to keep the cab on for a bit yet . |
Solstice run for the maiden voyage Corey!!!
Quote: dont know !! . |
got the front valance mounted ... now I can do the final body work on it ... ![]() also got a bunch more new pieces .. outer door handles and locks .. I will be sending the locks out to be all re keyed to the ignition .. so I will have 1 key. ![]() also continueing on with the harness .. looking good , although you probabally cant tell by the pic .. getting close to being finished ... ![]() . |
so finally got the rear tub mounted .. I used bolts for now (mock up) .. and I will be replacing them with elevator bolts for the final product . just like these ![]() heres the floor ![]() and the side wall ![]() i'm also mostly done the body work , so now its time for the cab to come off :) . |
It may be a little late for this, but might I suggest adding a removable panel under the back seat for fuel tank access, like the later 4Runners have? Seems like it might save some headaches down the road. |
dang dude .... thats an awesome idea , I wish it would have been suggested it earlier Thanks , I'm gonna still try incorperate that idea .. . |
more work on the harness today ... Finished up the main dash harness ... and ready now for install ![]() here's the rest of the pin-outs and scrap I further stripped ![]() and now 1/2 done the engine harness ... :) ![]() . |
front engine harness is now done as well :) ![]() also started on the vent windows.. i'm tinting the windows , so while I was at it , I figured I might as well clean up the frames (there was a little rust) so all sandblasted , and ready for some epoxy ![]() . |
ok .. so cab back off.. and now almost ready for some color :) ![]() ![]() just some welding and prep. first . |
continueing on .. and excited for it's coat of color ... I welded up a bunch of unwanted holes on the firewall and got all the new nuts installed to make the pieces "boltable" . ![]() also working on the tranny tunnel .. ![]() got it cut and ground ![]() also started to attach some of the "hold down studs" for the emergance brake cable .. still have to do the rear heater line hold downs .. I used these pieces , and just drilled holes to plug weld them in place .. ![]() got lots of the welding I wanted to do .. but I still have a bit more .. . |
got my tank filled today .. and continued on .. got lots done .. but was slowed on finding 11x1.25 mm nuts for the seat belts .. crap , I forgot all about it !! I ended up spendin 1/2 the day looking for these stupid little nuts , finally I went to the wrecker and "knocked" some off with a hammer and chistle .. so anyway .. made some backing plates for the seatbelt and seattrack bolt down nuts .. ![]() and got them welded ... ![]() just about ready to seal up the underside and give it some BLACK ... . |
I have finally finished up the welding .. another tank of ARGON was spent finishing up . just a little body work left to do .. and off to inner paint ... :) hope to have it in the paint shop by friday . |
To your tenacity Corey!!
Still gotta say.. WOW!!! Cant wait to see it finished... SO whats the other projects in line??? Anything this big??
thanks :) almost ready for inner paint ... yes , i do have another project in the wings .. I actually started it before the Trekker , so I'm very anxious to get back on it .. full custom frame |
still prepping for paint .. got the firewall all cleaned up .. found a wee bit of rust , but soon got that dealt with cleaning up the firewall ![]() ![]() all wire wheeled , and cleaned ![]() scuffed and zinc'd ![]() also got the underside scuffed and zinc'd ![]() the topside and bottom side wil be "sealed" in the paint booth ... ant last but not least .. I POR-15'd the inside of the rockers , cab corners , and cowl ... I was able to scuff the rockers and cab corners when I had them apart .. the cowl I was not able to .. I dont know how well the POR will work in the cowl , but I figured It would be better then nothing ![]() ![]() and YES .... tomorrow it goes to paint the inners :) . |
OK.... so "tomorrow" is over, I'm dying for the pics! |
your gonna have to be patient .. . |
buttoned up the Power steering lines today .. but found my return line just a few inches to short .. I'll have to replace that !! originally , there was /is a bracket for the Main power wire for the starter , housed in a white plastic surround , just around the face of the oil pan ... I wanted to keep it , so I made up a new bracket for the wire casing to "clip" to .. as well as a support for the P/steering line ![]() . |
pic I forgot to post ... ![]() anyway , the last thing i had to do before the inner paint .. was the new windshield washer nozzles .. now located on the hood .. holes cut ![]() and nozzles installed ![]() I also finished the underside , I made the holes for 3 washer hose clips .. and thats it for now ... deliverd for some color . |
Is that your second gen xtra cab? The one with the grey doors and the white bed? Man I love those. I just retired mine and I want another, but the '89 4runner and the '93 xtra cab are all the Toyota 4x4's I can justify right now. Someday though. -- Matt PS Nice work. |
yep .. it's the shop truck + my curent DD .. used and abused :) .. not much to add .. couple of little things .. + got the P/S return line replaced .. ![]() . |
I remember the part supra part mini truck... all monster.... Still cant wait for the trekker thou... BTW U R A MAD MAN- Nice work
thanks .. me to .. I'm stoked to get the trekker finished .. so a little bit today ... now that the cab is in the paint shop .. I needed to paint some pieces myself.. satin black ![]() ![]() . |

I checked in on the paint today .. and it will be " hi-build" primered tomorrow :) and then inners will be colored next week I hope .. ![]() ![]() . |
so a little bit more today ... got the alignment done , and locked down .. steering damper is also now attached .. replaced the spark plugs with a heat range lower and platenum tipped ($80.00 bucks) and also a lower temp 170* gates # 33867 thermo . ![]() front drive shaft is now in the works .. ![]() some cleaning and POR15 in the works ... on the front part of the drvshaft .. under the u-joint , there is a plug ... I have misplaced the size /part # anyone know it ? ![]() . |
Plug or a zerk fitting? |
plug .. |
got everything back together today . I checked some of the aftermarket stores today, for the dish style frost plug and had no luck , most wern't open today because it was a holiday , so I ended up taking the plug out of an old shaft I had from another truck that I parted out ... I "miked" it .. and was 34.25MM .. if anyone is ever interested.. anyway .. I install the plug , and cleaned and washed and prepped for the POR15 coating ... ![]() ![]() Chassis is now complete .. (once I bolt on the front shaft) ... only thing left to do is the Gear oil ... everything is done :) and ready for the cab . |
ALL gear oils changed today ... also picked up the locks .. ALL were re-key'd to match .. i'm ready for the cab !! . |
worked on the rear door today while my boy was at ball practice ... no I'm not coaching this year!! fit the new inner cover .. and also glued the rear door skin back on to the frame .. ![]() ![]() also painted the shifters .. ![]() ![]() cab should have been primed today .. I guess I'll see on Monday . |
well I was able to slip down to the bodyshop to snap some pics today before my sons double header ball game .. pics dont really do it justice , but I will say , it's looking real good so far , and the time I spent makin' sure things were "right" , are paying off I think . little bit of and issue with the drip rail area , as when I welded and did the "prep" work , I squared it off , instead of rounding the edges .. and when we looked at is in the body shop , I asked him to "round" them , so it would match the rest of the truck .. well when he did , he ended up grinding threw some of the welds creating pin holes , so then he had to weld them up and continue from there .. all and all ... I'm STOKED !!! ![]() ![]() ![]() and now just a "scuff" on the inners .. and some color .. I made him promice me , done by TUESDAY ... :) and on the way home from ball ... a little 2 point buck in velvet "picking" in the front yard gardens .. my boy and I followed it all the way up the block .. ![]() . |
Corey, is that a white or cream color? Looking like a nice paint job so far. Healthy-lookin' critter there. |
Quote: it's a light GREY , hi-build primer .. it "blocks" down to 320 real nice , and ready for a "wet on wet" INFERNO RED you'll see !!! ![]() . |
no call on the cab yet , but I am expecting it any day now .. so I have been continueing on with other stuff anyway .. I sprayed some hi build primer on the console , sanded and prepped , as well as the dash and rear hatch cover ... got them in FINAL color today .. :) All ready to install ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
This is damn cool. The anticipation is killing me...

Quote: Did you tell him there are people spread all across N America waiting to see this finished?
I did , but hes just small business guy like me .. and I know just how it is .. I really hate to pressure him .. so i'll wait . so I stopped in today and he has them now all "scuffed" .. and suggested color either today or tomorrow .. I guess we'll see . |
So it may be painted by friday is what you're saying (lol)... I can't wait to see it.. should be great... i really wanted to shave the drain rails when i did mine but no time for it... i swear if you have yours done before mine... LOL....
so my customer showed up , and I "wrote up" his truck for the work he had booked .. after his truck was in , I drove him to the bus depo. for his ride home .. I decided to stop into the bodyshop as it's real close to the bus depo and lookie what I saw :) I caught my painter in the booth shooting some color ... ![]() ![]() he was just finishing up the color , and came out .. we chatted for a bit and hes asked if i wanted a better shot of the color .. NO clear in these pics , cuz he was just doing it ... and I couldnt wait ![]() It'll be cleared now , inners all done and ready for me to pick up ... . |
so out and about today , I had to stop by and see it with the clear on .. and out in the sun showing off :) ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
Looks beauty but... did he miss painting the cowl and windshield frame? |
thanks .. and no .. these are just the inners !! so now I can put everything back together .. and THEN shoot the outside in color .. you'll see :) . |

So what product do you use for the heat shield/sound deadening (foil stuff)? |
That looks like Reflectex to me; you can get it from Home Cheapo. My questions: How do you have that adhered on there? You've got the core support set up to unbolt it, rather than grind the welds off now, correct? If so, stick a couple arrows on there so we can see how you bolted it on. I see ya got a pile o' $$$$$ sitting to the right there. ![]() Good for you Corey! |
Quote: it a "specific" product from DEI or DEA or something like that ... I just spent 1/2 hour trying to find the post .. its there some where, where I bought it , I just couldnt find it for you .. but I will find it . It's a special piece of heat shield 2' X 2' pieces was ~ $24 bucks .. I cut it , using my own template , and with its "self adhesive " backing .. just peal and stick .. little tougher then it looks .. this took about 3 hours to do :) Quote: yep , big pile of cash sitting right there :) .. all ready to crate . only the center "triangle" un-bolts .. you can see the new hardware in the pic .. 1 to the hood latch , 2 to the lower rad support .. . |

this is really amazing! your attention to detail goes WAY beyond my level of comprehension! thanks a bunch .. glad people are getting something from it .. this was the point , as well as letting people know of my company and what I do :) http://toyotafiberglass.com so - you to can restore your truck 2WD PROJECT(and comming soon) will be posted on my Trekker board as well as my 2WD specific board .. continued on the heater and dash .. got the rest of the plastic vents cleaned ![]() and all installed installed the dash and some other pieces .. ![]() ![]() and then installed the new cover .. i'm not happy with the fit now though , as the "gluing" of fabric undernieth has made the dash pad "sit up" higher then it is supose to :-/ .. I just need to talk to the upholstry guy , but i'm pretty sure I can now trim the excess fabric undernieth off now , and make it "fit" as it should .. ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

couple more pieces done today ... :) painted some satin black and some interior grey ![]() cleaned the last of the heater pieces and re-foam taped the seat area .. and installed ![]() also re assembled the mid vent .. and installed ![]() ![]() and had a few more mins , so I assembled the center console and decided I really wanted to see it in place :) ![]() . |

yippi !!! ;D got the tub on PERMINANTLY .. did a bit of undercoating.. easier , and (I think) better job to do it now .. ![]() ![]() and the frame and supports ![]() and mounted .. ![]() ![]() anyone need a G58 ? :) . |

little bit more today .. I'll let the pics do the talking ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now i get to "map out" the sterio and GPS + rear back up camera + finish up the dash :) . |
little more today .. some "finishing up" .. got the roof done in the sound deadner .. ![]() also , although they will not be seen or anything .. I sealed up the bare metal of the seats .. heres the backs ![]() also .. got he dash pad back from upholstery guy .. fits much better , and got the dash and switches and such in .. I wish the glove box door would fit these units better .. I might just take the door off and "build it up" to get that gap better .. ![]() Upholstery guy is comming next week to install the new carpet so , now , tomorrow I have to lay out the wiring for the sterio , GPS and such .. . |
so pulled the sterio stuff out today , and started the "layout" ![]() and unpacked , and set in position ![]() and ... seriously ? wiring again !! ![]() still have most of the GPS to do , and I didnt get my back up camera yet .. but gettin close to done with the other stuff , gonna start the sub box next week . |
Why not put the amps under the seats so you don't lose the cargo space in the back? |
not enough room , + here in the summer , i'm positive they would overheat . building a box , and with the rockfords I got , it is a min size box necessary so I can put the amps , fuse block , and crssovers all on the box .. box dimentions are 40" X 12 " X 8" wide .. so all in all , I wont loose to much space . |
My amps overheat if i cover them up (unless i run cooling fans)... under teh seat would be OK if there is enough flow over them... but when they're in the sun they'll overheat |
so as I mentioned .. steering wheel is in .. ![]() I also bought one of those cheep car covers off of ebay .. it's suposably for a 4Runner .. its basically a generic cover , but I figured with the interior and electroncis going in , and my shop being so dusty .. It might be a good idea .. ![]() also .. got the SUB box mostly done .. ![]() . |
any idea how much weight was added with the sound deading material? curious only. |
Quote: shipping weigh bill says 38 LBS .. . |

so with today being a long weekend I was able to get a little more done on the sub box .. Friday I gel coated it .. about 40mils thick .. so I could sand it down smooth .. this will "seal" the wood , so I can continue with paint.. sanded , and prepping for some "hi build " primer ![]() shot with the hi build , and ready for some sanding ![]() and finally .. I decided to go with the interior grey of some of the interior plastics , dash base , center console ... ![]() should be all cured and ready for the subs , amps and crossovers tomorrow :) . |
and put together front side ![]() and back side ![]() . |
Just curious Corey, but from the pix you posted, I don't see any air ports in your speaker enclosure. As far as I know, speakers gotta breathe. I built 6x9 enclosures for mine and drilled a 3/4" hole in the side of each. I have no idea what size hole is best suited for a given speaker size. With my stereo cranked up, the air that gets pushed through the hole is pretty substantial! Yours will push much more and if there's no where for the air to go, your speakers won't move like they should and the sound will suffer. Just my opinion, but I could be wrong...... I'm with many others here; great build and awesome documentation on your build! You could write a book!! LOL |
What Corey has there are sealed enclosures. Makes for a tighter bass, cleaner sound, but as you know, not as loud. As long as the volume inside the box is correct, should sound very nice! |
correct .. not going for "loud" .. but crisp nice sound , something to listen to or my passengers can watch a DVD , on those long trips to the car shows :) I measured up the box and took it into my "sterio guy" and the subs are what he recommended for the box/volume .. no ports , no partitions I do have to remove the power block from the box though , as it is to close to the crossovers on the l side , I'm sure it will create unwanted noise if I dont . |
Quote: Speakers you want to be sealed up (will make the lows sound better and give them better power handling). Subs can be either or, i've got mine in a ported box right now but i dont like it that much, want to go sealed.... it sounds odd at certain outputs... Power Block isn't in too bad of a location, You should... be fine. |
Thanks guys, you educated me! I'm gonna get a couple of 3/4" plugs for the port holes I made and listen for the difference in my system. |
so yippieee ... carpet install started ... underlay down , and finished .. ![]() ![]() and carpet started ![]() ![]() ![]() and now removed for sewing .. should be back in tomorrow for good :) . |
So, THAT's how it's REALLY done... ![]() That's talent! |
Hey Cory the treker is coming along great, however I was wondering why didn't you have the bed blasted and painted before mounting as you did the cab? |
Thanks guys ... chpfx - I didnt "blast" the bed because it's fiberglass . Sandblasting fiberglass is never a good idea as the media has a tendancy to imbed it's self into the panels .. i'm going to mechanically strip the old paint on the rear .. As I have mentioned , I didnt paint the out side , because of my shop conditions .. not enough room .. I already have to scraches on the primed surfaces .. I would be real choked if the scraches were in the paint !! . |
sorry for the delay on my posting .. I took a day off :) anyway .. my Uhpolstery guy .. Tony .. finished sewing up the carpet , so time to install .. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() still a little more to do .. but almost done the carpet sorry for the crappy pics .. one day I'll get a real camera again !! . |
Looking good. About the blasting, the guy i use says he can do / has done fiberglass (corvettes) and it comes out great. He doesn't use sand, he usually uses baking sodas, but uses something with even less grit for the fiberglass, and apparently it turns out great. Do you have any soda blasters in your area? |
yeah .. soda works great , but the water involved in the spraying is not a good choice .. If you must , walnut shells are your best bet , and the ONLY thing I would use .. but holy crap $$$$$$$$$$$$$ .. so mechanical stripping is my choice . |
I think Corey's well-passed that point with this job.
so with the dash back together , I just had to set the center console in place to see what it looked like .. ![]() ![]() i'm kinda liken' it :) . |
Hey Cory, Thanks for clearing that up for me, somehow forgot that the beds on the trekers were made of glass. Can't wait to see the truck finished, what an amazing job you've done sofar. Between your self and Greg I've gained motivation and a new respect for the work and patience it takes to do it right. Joe |

so still waiting for the uhpolstery guy to finish up the carpet .. so I decided to finish up the interior paint .. everything is now painted and awaiting install ![]() ![]() . |
so waiting for the uhpolstery guy to finish the carpet .. he was supose to be into day , to finish up ... but again , didnt show up .. ??? .. I dont get it !! he complains to me that he dosnt make any money doing uhpolstery , but yet I cant get anything done ! anyway .. while I was waiting for him to show up , I did some more sound deadining ![]() ![]() and both done ![]() I was "tapping" on the door skins before and after, what a huge differance ... before it was a tinney type " ting ting" and after .. it was a low tone "bomp bomp" , best I can discribe it .. I think it will make a very big differance , and i'm now really happy I did it . |
Can someone who lives close go and mow Cory's grass so he can work on the truck? I'm having update withdrawl. |
Cory, with all that sound deadener, you need to keep a close eye on all mirrors. I deadened my little tin can of a mini truck, (floors, doors, rear of cab, even the CEILING!) You do not hear basic traffic noise around you. You'll know what I mean when you sit at an intersection, stereo off, windows up, and just watch the cars go by silently. It is nice, but a little eary at the same time. That said, sirens are not heard until they are on top of you. But overall, the deadening is really nice
Quote: if all goes well , fingers crossed , he has agreed to finish it up tonight ...so we`ll see :) Quote: good point .. I will definatly make a note of that .. . |

so one side done .. on install , Tony was pulling so hard he ripped the seam , so .. he had to take it back to his shop and sew it back up ... heres what the one side looks like anyway ![]() . |
so not much to add ... as the other side has still not been done !! but .. I decided to install the speakers on the the one side anyway .. so mid and tweeter now perminantly installed .. ![]() . |
so got the doors and front fenders on.. ;D ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

OOOOOOOOOeeeeee!!

started working on the rear bumper .. I decided to go with a 84-89 4Runner rear.. stock Trekker bumpers are no longer avaliable , and I wanted chrome anyway .. so here's what I did . I got a "mock up " bumper from a buddy , so I was able to set it up on my jack stands , to get a good position .. ![]() tucked well into the body , it fits great .. ![]() ![]() I'm lovin' it .. so with it set in position , time to make up some brackets mocked up with cardboard first .. and transfered to steel plate , and cut ![]() cleaned up and bent with 70ton press ![]() got it welded , and then prepped for the POR-15 ![]() ![]() also while I was there , I needed to make my support bracket for the rear camera .. ![]() ![]() and got it all por-15'd .. ![]() . |
finally the other wheel well is done .. ![]() ![]() so now I can finish up the wiring , wire the sub box , fill with fluids .. and hopefully have a vid soon of it moving on it own power :) . |
so got a little done today ... cooling system full clutch blead brakes blead and P/S system full .... so with all the fluids in , time to finish up some little things before I can "fire it up" again .. center console shifter boot installed , as well as the arem rest .. including the "map pocket" .. just waiting for the custom "limit" bracket I made from the chromer to finish off the consol e , other then that , all done .. ![]() ![]() ![]() also got the sub box fully wired .. . |

Quote:Quote: Corey, one thing I've always wondered is how hard/is it possible to modify existing fiberglass items? I've always had a love/hate relationship with my camper shell since it's color matched, but the dimensions are for a Ford Ranger bed, so the rail portions are about 3 times as wide as the Toyota bed rails. I've often wondered if it would be possible to make a new mounting portion to neck it down the little bit to the Toyota bed dimension, or would that require re-doing the whole shell (making it much more economical to just get a different one, obviously)? Sorry for the hi-jack. |

Quote: no worries .. personally .. I would find a new canopy ! BUT , if you really need to do it best fix would be to cut the canopy right in 1/2 (@ the middle) and take out the section to make it fit .. then find the correct rear door , and enlarge the front window .. . |

little bit more work on the roof today .. but I mostly concentrated on the seat tracks .. got them all cleaned up , (wow , lots of work) and painted .. ![]() and dropped them off at the uhpolstery shop .. and wow .. the front bottoms are done :) I love em !! ![]() . |
too cool... there was a guy in Houston with an 81 on craigslist...2900. wishing i had not had to pass. waaaay jealous. |
Those seats look great! |
thanks guys ... project is progressing !! :) . |
so I decided to build a "production mold" afterall .. one less part to build when I do the other pieces for the trekker body . which means , YES ... anyone with a 79-83 pickup SHORT BOX .. will soon be able to build there own Trekker !! :) ![]() . |
Oh, for Pete's sake. You're making me feel like a lazy b-tard... Lookin' good, man!
finished up the mold today :) .. poped the old roof out ![]() trimmed the edges , ![]() a little bit more work to "prep" the new mold for maufacture , but basically , I'm now ready to make my new roof . |
Sick man. Just absolutely sick.
thanks .. . |
shop was full with customer vehicles for the last couple of weeks .. so I havent been able to do much on my own ... but the weekend is comming :) .. I have been doing some little things .. I did manage to get my battery hold down finished .. Plastic dipped , and installed ![]() . |
started work on my headliner today .. I had previously made a flat piece of fiberglass sheet .. and cut it down to size .. ![]() I then proceeded to cut it down to size .. and get it fitted .. ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
AWESOME... purely AWESOME
thanks .. . |
so .. finally .. mold is ready to produce . ![]() New topper comming soon :) . |
What will the new topper cost? it will fit on the early 4 runner correct? |
nope its TREKKER specific . I plan on doing the tub and rear fenders as well , so eventually , you will be able to convert your 79-83 short box into a "Precision" Trekker . |
started again on the headliner today, got the interior all covered up , and ready ![]() all glassed/rienforced to hold the shape ![]() ![]() will be all cured up for tomorrow .. when I can remove it , finish up the trimming , and add 1 final layer .. then final prep for the uhpolstery ... . |
should have the roof done tomorrow .. it's been a lot of work .. Chop strand mat , hand layed + rienforcement in stratigic points .. I used mutipul layers , stagering the weave , *Kevlar and 4oz woven for the hinge and rear vertical areas (winnabego used wood type stuff ) also the main roof struts/strengtheners have been filled with fiberglass foam sheet (fiberglass specific) for ultamate strength and flexability . hope to "pop" it from the mold maybe late tomorrow .. |
so , I believe this is the VERY newest NEW Trekker canopy in the world :) and out of the mold .. ![]() ![]() ![]() trimmed and washed ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

Wow Cory awesome the top looks great. Merry Christmas |
Very nice! |
Looking great as always, Cory! I'm a dummy regarding fiberglass. How do you finish it? Is there a gel coat or something, or do you just prime and paint it? Merry Christmas! |
thanks guys !! best of the hollidays to you all !! Quote: the white "gloss" finish is the gel coat .. there are always a few touch ups .. if you look around the window area you'll see a couple of areas where the gelcoat has "chipped" from trimming and pulling it from the mold .. so a little filler will fix that up . also for finishing up for paint .. it needs to have the "shine" scuffed off , so paint will "stick" so I'll take some scotch brite pads . and "take the shine off" .. then it'll be good to go !! . |
not much happening on the Trekker right now .. I have been focusing on other things .. but rest assured .. there is Progress and I still WILL have it "driving" this year .. headliner "pad" is done and ready . I still have to mount the topper/canopy , and build a "transition cover" between the headliner on the cab and on the canopy . ![]() Canopy progress is on going .. and hope to have it done this week .. blocking the gelcoat , and prepping it for paint ![]() . |
so got the roof all prepped and ready for some color .. I decided to "set" it in place to see what it will look like .. I'm happy .. I still have to perminantally mount it so some of the gaps are not correct , remember , it's just sitting there ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() . |
Sooo... after all the other custom fabbing you've done - why permanently mount the top? Why not make it removable lie the 4Runner? |
it will be removable .. I just doubt I will ever have it off again . |
so .. not been able to do much ... but getting a little bit done .. I started cleaning up the inner alum. trim plates , stripped the powder coat and got one into zinc .. I still want to paint them "satin black" (same black as the rest) .. but heres what I got so far .. ![]() also making a new "transition" moulding for the cab and roof seam .. the old cardboard is just not usable again :-/ .. so with some carefull measurements , I trimmed up a 2X4 , to use as a mould , rounded the edges .. and made a fiberglass piece ![]() fitting it is next on the list .. . |
installed the headliner "backing plate" today .. and "prepped" for the cab/canopy transition .. I used the original Trekker "cab rienforcement" roof piece .. as a "transition" for the canopy/cab fabric headliner . |
worked a bit on the Trekker today .. got the "transition" headliner piece , cut and fit .. ![]() ![]() glassed it up , and should be cured for tomorrow .. . |
well again , I am waiting for the uhplostery guy to do the headliner .. he was supose to be here the previous week , but did not show up , then he finally showed up last week to take measurements , to order the material .. so I guess because of the snow storm back east , he didnt get it , and it's supose to be here this comming week .. I hope so .. so I have just been "tying" up some loose ends .. got the other canopy strip , stripped and both of them painted ![]() ![]() ![]() also finished up the tail lamps .. Ordered new lenses , because the old ones were ... well old and 1 was broken .. ![]() The Mojave Chrome lamps i'm using have the back-up lamp chrome surround and the new lenses just have the black ones .. So I proceeded to drill out the mount stems and remove the black surrounds as well as the chrome ones ![]() removing the chrome ones I noticed there were both marked R .. huh !! ![]() and got the pieces swaped ![]() and tail lamps installed ![]() ![]() just got to get the canopy on now !! . |

thanks guys ... so good news ... my headliner material is in .. Talked to my uhplstery guy and It looks like a sunday install :) I had to "level" the roof strips and install a couple of "tack strips" . Because the headliner wont be 1 piece and will have to be sewn , We decided to follow the body line , to give it a "subtle" custom look .. also I added a rear dome lamp mount .. ![]() ![]() . |
well .. sunday has come and gone .. another bust on the interior . ![]() started off all well and fine .. trimmed out the centersection , cut and fit , and Tony took it back to his shop for some sewing ... well I guess his sewing machine took a turn for the worst , and decided not to work . Broke all of his needles , so I guess he has to order some parts and fix his machine :'( .. one day I might get this done !! . |
well finally got the rear roof headliner in .. ![]() ![]() and new dome lamp installed ![]() and set the roof on to "check it out" ![]() ![]() . |

Coming along real nice.......Man those speakers are huge....Are you considering a stated value insurance policy when you're done??????
thanks .. yeah it rocks :) ... Yes .. provincial insurance "value" is avaliable where I live .. I just have to have it appraised (with receipts) and I can get FULL coverge I absolutly plan on having this coverage . |
Hell, yeah, Cory! Keep rockin'! |

roof is on ;D ![]() ![]() ![]() . |

Looks sweet, Corey! |
Thanks Sean .. cant wait to get your rig in the shop :) . . well a little bit more today .. "mocked" up the rear hatch , and drilled hinge holes in the new roof I think she's ready for paint ![]() ![]() . |
ok .. I lied !! I had to do 1 more thing before paint .. I had to build a moulding/cover for the transition between the roof and cab started by building it in Pieces , and then glassing it together .. ![]() trimmed and "snapped" into place .. ![]() still a little finishing , and some uhpolstery to do .. but you get the idea .. . |
Right on; bet it's nice not to have to shove it around now that she runs!!!!
![]() What more can i say. Also, how does your rear e-brake work? |
everything works and runs great .. E brake works as stock .. pull and she holds .. eventually I would like to replace with a "custom built " rear cable , but this one will do for now .. I still want to do some heat shields for the exhaust .. but for now , I'm done .. she's off to paint on Wednesday I must say I'm very impressed with my braking system overall .. with some speed , stompin' on the brakes it stops awesome .. I havent got it "to speed" to test them , but i'm VERY confidant everything will work as planned .. stops on a dime with 35's :) very happy !! . |
off to paint ![]() ![]() ![]() she's gone ... . |

Its been a year or so sense I've checked in. I must say it's coming along. ![]() Mike |

Corey, on pg 9 of this thread, you were working on the differentials. Did I understand your report correctly in that you're using the stock 4.10 gearing for the 35's you're using? I run 33's on mine. After doing the math, I came up with a gear ratio of 5.01 to fool the drive train into thinking it was still turning the stock 27" tires that originally came on my truck when I bought it new. If this gear set were actually available, the truck would accelerate as it did stock and both the speedometer and odometer would once again read true and fuel mileage should also increase. In reality, only 4.88 and 5.29 gear ratio's are the only viable choices available. The 4.88 gears are spot on for spinning a set of 32's whereas the 5.29 set are much better suited to turn 35's; 34.84's to be exact. So why aren't you using 5.29 gearing? Strength shouldn't be an issue with that ratio. 4.10's are just way too high a gear for running 35's in my opinion. I also didn't see any mention of positraction units although I may have missed something somewhere. I like how you compensated for the use of lifting blocks between the springs and axle housing by fabricating the shock setup to help prevent spring wrap. Here are two big thumbs up for an excellent build and for sharing it with all of us!
