Just think, once we went to the Moon, but then we came back and never went anywhere again. The L5 society had to sue NASA to keep them from burning the plans for the Saturn5 booster, because NASA didn't want competition for the shuttle. Then NASA took about 5 complete Saturn5's and laid them on their side as visual demonstrations, thus ruining them for any further use.
