Re: Welcome to my nightmare!!! A conversion from a piece of crap 5sp to a 372-L Automatic for TURBO

The are still inherently weak because the gear is pretty thin. So do you think they would be better off with a .79 5th gear ratio like the FM145 found in the Ford Ranger instead of the .856 found on the KM145?

Interesting thought... I think that would help. Even more so if they get the ratio change from the modifying the OD gear. The OD ratio is a combination of the input gear to counter shaft ratio and the OF gear ratio. Some units have different input gear counter shaft assemblies and that ends up changing the OD ratio.

The other issue I have seen is the main shaft thrust plate on some KM145 was soft and pounded out. That let the synchro hubs run against the forks all the time, dumping extra metal into the unit and causing all kinds of shifting problems.

One last thought is that I'm a strong believer in shot peening the roots of the gear teeth. Assuming it was not done at the factory it can increase fatigue life by a factor of three.

Also, nice find on the modded OD gear. Makes me want to build another stick. The upside of the auto is I have had to drive in a lot of traffic and not having to shift is nice. My other car is a stick so I figured I needed at least one auto.
