Re: Tire Experiences Thread

Tire Cooper Discoverer Radial LT 285/75R16
Date Used about 8 months
On Road (dry & wet) Drives like any other street tire dry, a bit sketchy when wet.
On Road (snow) No real issues when used at low speed in packed snow/ice.
Dirt Trails Acts just like any other street tire. I've never been stuck using these tires (except for the flat tire issues, but that was on pavement).
Rock Act just like any other street tire on rocks. The only exception is that the tread exhibited far fewer cuts than most street tires I've used in rocks. Very hard compound, poor traction on rocks.

These are the tires my Montero had when I bought it. Extremely poor quality tire. Small punctures in the tread resulted in rusty/broken belts VERY quickly. 3 of the 4 tires I had fell apart from the inside-out. I'll never buy another set of Cooper tires as a result of my experience with these tires (as well as the other Cooper tires I've used on other vehicles).

Tire 33x12.50R15 BFG Mud-Terrain KM
Date Used 2005-present
On Road (dry & wet) Excellent traction dry, good in wet even on oily streets.
On Road (snow) Not as much traction as studded tires, but sufficient for hauling the family to the snow. Almost got stuck when I parked on ice in a silly spot.
Dirt Trails Dirt trails don't mean a lot to me. I've driven everything I've ever owned or been responsible for on some kind of dirt road. I didn't buy these tires for use on dirt roads.
Rock More traction than any other tire I've personally used on rocks. Good pliability when aired down. Tread damage more obvious than on my old Coopers (see above), but I rarely spin these tires on rocks. I've never been truely stuck using these tires with 4WD and a locker.

Also, I have well over 40k on the BFG's and still have more than 50% tread left. I rotate ever 2500 miles and keep my toe set properly.

My wife tells me that my next tires will be BFG KM's as well, even though she yells whenever she hears what they cost. I'll be replacing these tires due to age, not tire wear (in a couple more years).
