Is there anything specifically that pictures would tell you? The Gen2 manual trans looks just like the Gen1. It has a removable aluminum bellhousing. The gear case is cast iron, and the tailhousing is aluminum.
That said, I'm not really sure what changed between the Gen1 and Gen2 six cylinder manuals.
You might also consider looking for a Montero Sport. They seemed to be a little more common. I have the chassis of one.
I know on the automatics the xfer shifter is on the drivers side whereas on the Gen I it's on the passenger. If the Gen II 5-speed xfer shifter is still on the passenger and trans shifter is on the driver it may allow me to use a different, more robust trans in my shorty. Pending bolt pattern similarities and spline counts.
