I'm not sure it's the "cooling down" that is the operative factor.

If you have a vacuum connect/disconnect mechanism for the front axle, I suspect the problem lies there. It may be that the vacuum release route is plugged/blocked, and it takes sitting for an extended period of time for the vacujum to leak down.

There is an easy way to find out. Remove the front drive shaft. Put it in 4x4 and move a few feet. then put it back in 2x4 and shut off the engine. Get under the Jeep and see if you can turn the front yoke on the t-case by hand. If you can't, then it's something in the t-case, not the front axle.
