One Standard Unifies the Sport of Rock Crawling Across the Nation

December 10, 2002-Riverton, UT: The Rock Crawlers Association of America (RCAA) creates one standard unifying the sport of Rock Crawling across the nation.

The new rules will be used in Calrocs, NARRCA, RCRC Regional Championships as well as RCCA's National series. The official 2003 rules were posted on the Internet December 5. The biggest change was the addition of two new classes making a total of three classes available under RCAA's sanctioning body. Any one of the three classes may or may not be ran at any particular event or series. This of course, depends on the promoter of each individual event. The three classes are the Modified Stock, Pro Modified, and the Super Modified classes.

'The Modified Stock class consists of OEM based vehicles with certain upgrades and modifications as outlined in the Vehicle Requirements and limitations section of the rulebook. The Pro Modified class allows for greater technology than the modified stock class. The Super Modified class is for exotic buggies and highly modified stock vehicles. The primary difference between the Pro and Super Modified classes is the seat configuration, tub width, and rear steer.'

The Goodyear/Skyjacker Extreme Rock Crawling Nationals will only run two of the three classes during the 2003 season- the Modified Stock and Super Modified classes. Those competing in the Modified Stock class may not compete in the Super Modified Class and visa versa.

Listed below are some of the main differences between the two classes. For more details and specifications refer to the Vehicle Requirements and Limitations section of the rulebook.

Equipment  Modified Stock Super Modified
Tires 35" 40"
Rear Steer  Not approved Is approved with an eight-point penalty upon use
Minimum Weight  None  2200 lbs.
Tub/Cab Must house two front seats More than one seat isn't required
Fenders  Required  Not required
Winches  6000 lbs.  6000 lbs.

Other rule changes and variations between the two classes include the body, frame, roll bars, steering, suspension, axles, tires, and fluid control.

Additional rules added to the Safety portion of the rulebook are as follows: four point harness seat belts, handles on the roll cage, the placement location of on-board fire extinguishers and fluid control. It also states restrictions to the minimum length of spotter straps. Spotters are encouraged to not pull on straps by a two point credit per obstacle.

A copy of this rulebook is attached. For more information about the 2003 rules visit www.rockcrawler.org or call RCAA at 801-446-5337.
