The sport of rockcrawling has really taken off over the last couple of
years. The problem is that most of the competitions are localized in certain
pockets of the United States and Canada, and their really hasn't been a good
transition that allows would be rockcrawlers to make the leap from climbing
rocks on the trail to full blown competition. Recognizing this, Rich Klein of
CalROCS fame, along with several other folks have created the NARRCA
(North American Regional Rock Crawling Association) allowing the sport
to be brought to parts of the country that previously have not had the
opportunity to enjoy it.
NARRCA promotes regional events that allow drivers to get in to the sport and
compete on a local level. The courses in the NARRCA series events are not
designed to destroy your beloved trail rig, but geared towards technical
driving skills and spotter teamwork.
The first event in Washington State took place in Goldendale, Washington on Sept
6-7, 2003. The first day of the event was held at the County Fairgrounds, and the
second day was held just out of town on private land. The town of Goldendale
was very supportive to the visiting rock crawlers, even putting on a parade
Friday evening after tech-in.
Competition was broken down in to two classes: Modified Stock and Pro Modified.
In order to compete in the Modified Stock Class, you must have 35" or under
tires and close to stock bodies. Custom Vehicles with 36" or larger tires
competed in the Pro Modified Class. Both the Modified Stock and the Pro
Classes ran a series of five timed sections each day of competition.
Within each course, there was an opportunity to make up points through bonus
gates the teams could pass through.
There were approximately 50 competitors from all over the northwest. Being a
regional event, most competitors knew each other and helped out with parts
or labor if someone needed it. Little Rich did a great job designing the
courses, making them extremely technical without being dangerous. Judging from
the enthusiasm of both the spectators and teams, there is no doubt that the event
turned out the way it was intended, and will be back next year.
NARRCA will be holding multiple events in many states, along with offering
a series of major events in which they will name regional champions. Each
competitor ranking 50% in their class will qualify to compete in the NARRCA
Finals in Farmington, New Mexico, October 4 - 6, 2003.
