The second leg of the the BFGoodrich Tires New Mexico State Rockcrawling Championship, was held in Farmington, NM, April 27-28, 2002. Friday was the usual show & tell (check-in) at the Best Western Hotel where the public had the opportunity to meet some of the 42 competitors and check out their freshly painted rigs before the carnage began the next morning.

The course at Farmington had tight squeezes, steep climbs and extreme obstacles.

Saturday morning brought the threat of rain to the competition, but with all the excitement in the air, the threat of rain didn't dampen the spirits of the 14 modified stock & 28 trophy class competitors.

The course setters for this event separated the competition areas into an upper and a lower section. The upper course had 7 challenging obstacles while the lower course had 8 difficult obstacles, with #8 being the most difficult and aptly being used as the tie breaker. Obstacle #1 on the upper course was the most difficult for short or non rear-steer vehicles. These vehicles would have to winch to make it through. Obstacle #4 started ok, but after one competitor dislodged a boulder, it became almost impassable unless you had 40 inch tires. When another rig had to be winched out, the boulder got moved at the same time turning the obstacle into a freeway for those who were lucky enough to follow.

Kathy Crook and Amy Bulloch demonstrate that woman drivers
have no fear of steep drops and off-camber situations.

On obstacle #8 on the lower course, competitors had to negotiate a tight turn through a notch, which if not done right, would put them on their right side. Drivers had to then negotiate up through another notch with a right turn at the end. This obstacle tossed 11 competitors on their sides!

Congratulations to Team #1 of Blume/Attaway  for their first place finish in the Trophy class.  With a final score of 371, they edged out the second place team of Terry Howe (4x4wire.com's own Jeep Editor) and Sean Lazelle.  Third place finish went to the team of Jordan/Watson with a final score of 370.

The winner of the Modified Stock class was the team of Mello/Ahern.  These guys edged out the second place team of Sisson/Sisson by only one point.  Third place went to Team Waggoner/Waggoner with a final score of 332.

obstacles made roll-overs a common site in Farmington.
