San Bernardion NF Travel Management EA Open for Comment

United States Department of Agriculture
Forest Service San Bernardino National Forest
Date:  October 9, 2008

Dear Friends and Neighbors:
The purpose of this mailing is to announce the release of the Draft Environmental Analysis (DEA) for the Motorized Travel Management project.  This project will make limited changes to the Forest’s motorized transportation system and implement the Travel Management Rule.  If you would like to examine the DEA in detail, you may access an electronic copy on our website: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/projects/ohv.shtml .  The San Bernardino National Forest Supervisor’s Office also has copies of the DEA available for viewing.

Three action alternatives are presented in the DEA that combine many of the comments and recommendations that have been provided at the public meetings and from other contacts.  The DEA has a detailed analysis of how each alternative could affect different aspects of the environment.  You now have an opportunity to examine the details about the project, including measures designed to protect resources or alleviate potential problems you may be concerned about.  The release of the DEA begins the formal comment period, during which we will consider all public comments before issuing a decision.

Written, facsimile, hand-delivered, and electronic comments concerning this action will be accepted for 30 calendar days following publication of a legal notice in the San Bernardino Sun newspaper (anticipated October 14, 2008).  The publication date in the newspaper of record is the exclusive means for calculating the comment period for this proposal.  Those wishing to comment should not rely upon dates or timeframe information provided by any other source. The regulations prohibit extending the length of the comment period.

Written comments must be submitted to: San Bernardino National Forest, Attn: Richard Thornburgh, Environmental Coordinator, 602 S. Tippecanoe Ave., San Bernardino CA 92408. The office business hours for those submitting hand-delivered comments are: 8:00am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Facsimile comments can be sent to 909-383-5586.

Electronic comments must be submitted in a format such as an email message, plain text (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), or Word (.doc) to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with “Travel Management” in the subject line.  In cases where no identifiable name is attached to a comment, a verification of identity will be required for appeal eligibility. If using an electronic message, a scanned signature is one way to provide verification.

I appreciate your interest in this project and the stewardship of the San Bernardino National Forest. If you have any further questions about this project, please contact Richard Thornburgh, Environmental Coordinator, at 909-382-2642.
