Remember that the added weight of your trailer, along with its length, will cause acceleration to be slower and your stopping distance to increase while towing.
- Find an open space with little to no traffic to practice accelerating and braking to help you become more familiar with how long it will take to accelerate and brake safely
- Maintain a speed of 55 miles per hour or less while towing.
- Anticipate stops and begin braking earlier than you would if you were not towing to give yourself the time and distance needed to come to a safe stop.
- Never ride your brakes, and never slam on your brakes, especially when driving down a steep grade or hill.
