Sally Jewell, the CEO of outdoor gear retailer REI, is proposed as the nomination for Interior secretary. Her confirmation to replace Ken Salazar before he leaves at the end of March looks to be a slam dunk. Jewell will not only be the first woman to fill a second-term department head opening, she’ll also ensure that someone with corporate leadership, financial services and engineering experience is in the Cabinet. She’s spent the last dozen years in top jobs at REI, a $2 billion-a-year chain of 100 stores that Fortune says is among the best 100 companies to work for. Before that she was a banker for 20 years, her last role overseeing Washington Mutual’s commercial lending arm. And before that she was an engineer for Mobil.
