[b]West Monroe, LA - [/b]Electronic stability control (ESC), also known as traction control, is NHTSA-mandated for all 2012-newer vehicles under 10,000 pounds GVWR. When a vehicle's side-to-side wheel speed variations are too great based on steering wheel angle, ESC assumes that the vehicle is skidding. The ESC's computer then applies brakes individually as necessary to restore traction and control. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 126 (FMVSS 126) is a test that validates ESC functionality. It requires an evasive lane-change maneuver to be safely executed at highway speeds. Aftermarket components that potentially affect wheel speed must be compatible with the factory ESC. Inaccurate wheel-speed information affects ESC as well as ABS and other systems such as adaptive cruise control.
