Superlift Releases NHTSA-Compliant Ford F-150 6-Inch Lift Kit
West Monroe, LA - Electronic stability control (ESC), also known as traction control, is NHTSA-mandated for all 2012-newer vehicles under 10,000 pounds GVWR. When a vehicle's side-to-side wheel speed variations are too great based on steering wheel angle, ESC assumes that the vehicle is skidding. The ESC's computer then applies brakes individually as necessary to restore traction and control.
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 126 (FMVSS 126) is a test that validates ESC functionality. It requires an evasive lane-change maneuver to be safely executed at highway speeds. Aftermarket components that potentially affect wheel speed must be compatible with the factory ESC. Inaccurate wheel-speed information affects ESC as well as ABS and other systems such as adaptive cruise control.
Traditionally, robotic steering and pontoons are used for the FMVSS 126 test. As an alternative to robotic testing, Superlift was part of a pilot project at Clemson University's International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) to validate FMVSS 126 compliance using a computer simulator. Known as Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL), a computer "runs" the lane-change test on an actual aftermarket-modified vehicle. The vehicle is stationary, but the ESC functions as if it's actually doing the lane-change test. The HiL computer monitors the ESC readings and compares them to the factory parameters.
Using HiL testing, Superlift verified that its 2009-current F-150 4x4 6-inch lift system is compatible with Ford's factory Roll Stability Control and Advance Trac ESC systems. Superlift isn't aware of any other Ford lift kit on the market that has passed the FMVSS 126 test/has proven ESC compatibility.
In addition to traction-control compliance, Superlift designed its current-model F-150 suspension system to be durable, affordable and installer friendly. Front lift is partially accomplished with Superlift strut tower spacers. These retain the OE struts—no disassembly required—so factory ride quality is retained.
Replacement steering knuckles are meticulously engineered to yield the best possible alignment specs without increasing track width. So, turning radius and handling aren't compromised. CAD-designed, laser-cut high-clearance lower control-arm crossmembers also help provide proper alignment, shaft angles and maximum suspension travel. A billet front driveshaft spacer ensures adequate engagement at full droop. The crossmembers are tied together by a wrap-around skidplate, which fully protects the front differential. For additional rigidity, kicker braces stabilize the Superlift rear crossmember to the factory transmission crossmember.
Blocks are used for the rear lift, so spring rate/ride quality is unaffected. Rear shock options include twin-tube Superide units or premium Superide Select (SS) monotube gas shocks by Bilstein. The Superlift F-150 kit also includes all the necessary relocation brackets and parts for the brake lines, front swaybar and compression travel stops. All Superlift components are covered by a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Maximum recommended tire size with this kit is 35x12.50. A minimum 20-inch diameter wheel is required, 8.5 to 9.5 inches wide, with backspacing between 4.0 and 5.5 inches.Installation requires cutting the OE frame. Superlift recommends that the job be done professionally. Estimated shop time is 6-8 hours, not including alignment and headlight re-aiming.
