URGENT: Blood Donations Needed!
September 11, 2001 is a tragic day in American history. Due to the tragic loss of life and massive number of injuries, Blood Banks in Washington, DC and New York City are issuing a call for donations.
On behalf of the staff of OutdoorWire, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the victims of today's tragic events. I urge every recreationist to take a few minutes of time to visit your local Blood Bank and provide a life saving donation. It makes no difference where you live; blood donations are desperately needed!
The Red Cross reports, "The blood needs of NYC and the other areas attacked today are going to be huge. Even with no airplanes flying, the Red Cross anticipates moving about 80,000 units of blood into the area to supply hospitals, and has the means to do so."
"What will happen is a domino effect. The close-by blood centers to NY and Washington will send blood, then they will need replenishing. Those close to them will send their blood, then others nearby will replace theirs, and so on and so on. That's what we do, the blood regions send blood back and forth to keep the supply constant."
"Today we are swamped beyond belief by donors. We have a line out into the street and all of our local drives going today are also swamped. However, there is a problem with this. All these people donating today will be ineligible for the next 56 days, which can leave a hole in the NW blood supply when the time comes to replace the blood we move east to replenish the blood going into the areas of need. So we are encouraging people to hold off for awhile. To donate a month down the line when we feel the effects of what's happened today. To set up blood drives that will be desperately needed at that time."
"Blood's going to be needed for the people injured today for some time. Especially for all the burn victims. Platelets are especially needed for burn victims, and those can be frozen. This is what pheresis donation is."
"My advice would be...wait. Wait a week, and then call 1-800-Give Life to see where and when you can donate."
