New Jeep Trail Proposed in Bangs Canyon, Colorado
AGENCY: Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior.
BACKGROUND: Over the past several years, the BLM has developed and finalized a Management Plan for motorized travel in Bangs Canyon. This plan was formulated through a cooperative effort between the BLM and the Bangs Canyon Citizens Advisory Group. In the final plan, with input from the Advisory Group, the BLM adopted a plan which permits new single-track and two-track trail construction in certain areas of Bangs Canyon.
The proposed new trail will be located within an approved area under the Bangs Canyon Management Plan.
As of late last week, only 3 letters in support of the new trail construction had been received by the BLM Grand Junction Office. They have already received thousands of letters opposing this new trail, mainly from misinformed anti-access people who mistakenly believe that the trail area in Bangs Canyon is the same area that the BLM had proposed for Wilderness Study designation in 1999. Unfortunately, the proposed WSA has the same name - Bangs Canyon. The area of Bangs Canyon which permits development of new trails under the Bangs Canyon Management Plan is NOT the same geographical area proposed for WSA designation.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Mr. Curry feels it would be most beneficial to get large numbers of individually written letters. This may take just a little more of your time, but a form letter at this point would not be as persuasive as we need our letters to be.
Please take just a few minutes to write a letter. (See below)
Thank you all in advance for your help.

Dear Ms. Robertson.
I support the Grand Mesa Jeep Club's proposed new trail near Billings Canyon.
Talk about some or all of the following:
1) The Bangs Canyon Management Plan permits new trail development.
2) The proposed trail is in the bottom of a usually dry canyon consisting of mostly boulders and sandstone so environmental impact would be minimal.
3) The proposed trail would be an asset to Grand Junction and the western slope by giving one more recreational opportunity to visitors in the area.
4) Grand Mesa Jeep Club has been around for nearly 40 years and has a reputation for being a group of reliable and responsible four-wheelers. With Grand Mesa monitoring and maintaining the trail it will be well managed.
5) Please make the Bang's Canyon Area truly "multiple use" and let the 4X4 enthusiast have a place to enjoy also.
Please keep me informed as this project progresses. I completely support the proposed new trail and hope to see it implemented in the near future.
Sincerely
[your name and address]
