Dedicated to conservation and multiple use of public lands for recreation opportunities.

The Sierra Club is trying to close Pismo again!

Please make time in your schedule to attend the meeting between February 13-16, 2001. The exact date of the meeting will be posted when the information is released.

This is an alert sent by the Sierra Club to its members:

HOW TO SAVE PISMO DUNES FROM ORVs: Sierra Club's Santa Lucia Chapter and the San Luis Obispo Environmental Defense Center are working to put a stop to one of California's longest running and most environmentally destructive coastal tragedies: off road recreational vehicle (ORV) use of the Pismo Dunes.

Currently, and for decades, over one million dune buggies and other off road recreational vehicles annually tear apart sensitive dune structures and destroy endangered species such as the snowy plover. The spectacle has to be seen to be believed. Four wheel drive cars racing right through Atascadero Creek, rendering useless a steelhead trout fish stream. The carnage goes on for miles along the beach and for thousands of acres of sand dunes inland.

The Coastal Commission is expected to put a stop to the senseless destruction at its February 2001 meeting in San Luis Obispo. Activists are urged to mark your calendars now for the week of February 13-16, 2001 and we will let you know the specific day of the hearing. Hundreds of activists are needed to insure the Commission does the right thing.

Fortunately activists can now see the destruction without having to go to Pismo. Film-maker Robin Chilton, Gordon Hensley of SLO-EDC and Tarren Collins of Sierra Club's Santa Lucia Chapter have created a video of the Pismo Dunes and have scheduled an activist event for January 18, 2001.

The event will happen at the United Methodist Church, Wesley Building, 1515 Fredericks Street in San Luis Obispo at 7:30pm. Check it out.

Next Coastal Commission Meetings:

January 9-12, 2001 in Los Angeles and February 13-16, 2001 in San Luis Obispo. Happy Holiday and go to the beach, Mark Massara Sierra Club Coastal Program
